    "I'm never gonna know you now but I'm gonna love you anyhow"... one of the best, and saddest, lyrics i've read, ever. Elliott is my light in this mess I call life.

    • @imaginethersnoheaven9174
      @imaginethersnoheaven9174 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Why is that line so important, for me anyway? Okay, there is a loss-
      "I'm never gonna know you now", and then, NO judgement of that-
      "but I'm gonna love you anyhow", which is just so much like saying,
      "I'm just going to do this. It doesn't matter, the weight upon me, it carries"
      Maybe that's too much for some people to take in. But the kicker here is,
      it's always your choice! Deal with, what you can deal with.
      Anyway, it's a very haunting lyric for me. I get it, and it's a sharp knife so, I never reach for that one! But it reaches me, just the same.
      And one more thing, i think might be noteworthy. Elliott's pull on me has always been from, beyond the grave. Yep. I never knew his music, while he lived. I'm not gonna look into that any more, right now because... why??
      What on earth could i possibly deduce from that little, bit of information?
      Logically, probably nothing. But hey! That I found the music at all, is probably more than enough, for any introspection.
      Yeah. It is. Maybe one day, I will go deeper... inside.

      @commiecunt1312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, i agree, so minimalistic, but so complex simultaneously, I think its because of the complexity of his guitar playing, he's an interesting person to study musically, it may sound kind of easy to play his songs, but they're really not, i tend to find he likes 7th chords and also just weird chords in general

    • @commiecunt1312
      @commiecunt1312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@herbertrichard614 He may have had a drug addiction, but that doesn't make him a bad person, drugs don't make a person bad, its the person that makes themselves bad, Elliott had a terrible childhood, which resulted in drug use, I was merely analysing his musical genius because thats what is so interesting about him, as well as his lyrics, usually talking about said drug/alcohol abuse. The stigma around drug addicts is terrible, not all drug addicts are just junkies with no purpose except taking those drugs. Elliott made bad decisions in terms of his coping with the childhood trauma that he could have avoided. In conclusion, Elliott was a good person who made terrible choices. Its not the decisions that make a person, its their morals. So yes, some drug addicts are just generally bad people, but a lot are just nice people with terrible decision making skills, but society decides to look down upon them for that, which makes society the bad thing in this situation.

    • @herbertrichard614
      @herbertrichard614 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@commiecunt1312 Agreed. Elliott Smith lived six blocks from where I am sitting. He was a good person. My view on drugs tends more to it being an illness than a moral failure. Unquestionably Elliott is an unparalleled talent in American music. What is also interesting is that Smith worked right to the end of his life. "From a Basement..." is good. Van Gogh also worked right until the end. Thanks.

    First the mic, then a half cigarette
    Singing, "Cathy's Clown"
    That's the man she's married to now
    That's the girl that he takes around town
    She appears composed, so she is, I suppose
    Who can really tell?
    She shows no emotion at all
    Stares into space like a dead china doll
    I'm never gonna know you now
    But I'm gonna love you anyhow
    Now she's done and they're calling someone
    Such a familiar name
    I'm so glad that my memory's remote
    'Cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note
    Here it is, the revenge to the tune
    "You're no good
    You're no good, you're no good, you're no good"
    Can't you tell that it's well understood?
    I'm never gonna know you now
    But I'm gonna love you anyhow
    I'm here today and expected to stay
    On and on and on
    I'm tired
    I'm tired
    Looking out on the substitute scene
    Still going strong
    XO, mom
    It's okay, it's alright, nothing's wrong
    Tell Mr. Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
    In the place where I make no mistakes
    In the place where I have what it takes
    I'm never gonna know you now
    But I'm gonna love you anyhow
    I'm never gonna know you now

    Elliott has sang this song and basically said he’s played it too many times and isn’t singing it good. He’s said that 2 other times singing this song live but I thought it was perfect and I didn’t know what he meant by saying he’s not singing it well because I thought it was amazing. But now I’ve heard this performance of the song and it sounds so much more genuine and now I know what he’s talking about. Wasn’t the depression that got him but more of it being mixed with drugs. Can manage depression. Plus he wasn’t always a depressed person. People forget a lot of his songs were about other people or his take on their situations. I think because everyone thought he was so depressed and expected that type of sound his depression and use got worse. Like “Kings Crossing” basically is saying. He’s seen that movie before and knows how it ends. Such a fucking tragic thing.

    He was a bit nervous in the beginning hit a wrong note it wasn't a huge mistake by any means. He pulled it together and finished well. It takes big balls to bare yourself like this so publicly, his dynamic in the vocal drives the sound along with the snarling bass from the yamaha now that's unique. This guy is a treasure I only found him recently. Brilliant wordsmith poetry in motion.

    Objectively beautiful Art. I don't know if he was ever able to connect meaningfully with another human being, but god loved his ragged, open soul.
