I remind myself often that there are people among the crowd, who are real heroes, and we don't even know they are there. This is another story of one of those heroes. They look like everyone else but are made of stronger stuff than most. Thank you Sean Jones for that heroism, and all of those like him who have served, and are currently serving. We owe them far more than we can ever pay. I for one, am eternally grateful for people like Sean.

I was in Helmand in 2007 in a supporting role and spent some time in a FOB outside Sangin. I was continually impressed by the outstanding courage of the infantry lads and female medics operating there. It is obvious to me that, for every story like this one highlighted, there are hundreds, possibly thousands, that will never be told, they are individual burdens, silently shouldered. I was then, and continue to be, in awe of these fine people - it was quite humbling being around them.

Spoken like a fool whose never been in contact - ever .
      It’s beyond terrifying to get that close . It’s primal , it’s scary , it’s violent , it’s horrible beyond words .
When the order “ fix bayonets “ Is given you are literally in the brown stuff
No one wants to do this to another human being , not even to human beings as vile as “ Terry “
Brassing someone up is bad enough , mincing then into pieces with a Javelin at the time is amusing but afterwards you need to live with it . Calling in fast air or a fire mission is clinical but using a bayonet is traumatic for both the lad using it and the poor sod on the business end of it

@@lostinaustralia-dave7802 whilst “Op Granby “was a literal turkey shot one would have imagined it would have taught you respect for both yourself and the poor sods opposite. There is nothing “ personal “ about plunging a bayonet into another human being mate. It’s just war . It’s just another weapon . One though which gets you close enough to smell death . The way you worded the original post was incredibly immature mate . Accepted you Served on Op Granby but in what capacity ? Most of the contacts on Op Granby we’re SF or 4/73 bty calling in deep fire or the armoured lads in their challenger II and naturally the Gunners pounding Iraqi positions with depth fire . I’m aware of a few “
Contacts “ the Grenadier guards had but nothing even remotely close to Op Herrick and the nature of the seriously medieval near hand to hand fighting the lads did . I know so many messed up young warriors from Op Herrick who have been scarred for life from using the bayonet , ditto the class of 82 on Op Corporate who used the bayonet on Argentinians , in fact I had DS who were Falklands Vets and don’t forget more lads have taken their lives since the end of both op corporate and op herrick than died In theatre . War is a mugs game venerated by those who have never fought it .

And it’s unfortunately an absolute guaranteed way of messing your head up if you are forced to use it (if your not a psycho). It’s a pretty big deal to engage another human with a bayonet. It’s not pretty, and it’s not like the moves where they just drop dead, there is a lot of screaming, blood, and gasping for air, never mind the direct eye contact and the pleading for you to stop! Can really blow someone’s melon.

One of their predecessor regiments (The Hampshire regiment) did the same at Tebourba in Tunisia in 1943. Being attacked by Tigers and half-track infantry, they counter attacked with a bayonet charge, winning a VC. King George said they "showed exceeding fondness for the bayonet "

From Wikipedia - interesting that it still has the same effect today! You just know that if a British soldier is running at you with a bayonet, your options are run, or start leaking.
“As early as the 19th century, military scholars were already noting that most bayonet charges did not result in close combat. Instead, one side usually fled before actual bayonet fighting ensued. The act of fixing bayonets has been held to be primarily connected to morale, the making of a clear signal to friend and foe of a willingness to kill at close quarters.[38]
The bayonet charge was above all a tool of shock. While charges were reasonably common in 18th and 19th century warfare, actual combat between formations with their bayonets was so rare as to be effectively nonexistent.”

I think you should have got a VC for it, a bayonet charge in modern combat, that broke an enemy attack that pinned down your entire unit! Then you go and break their momentum with 3 other dudes and massive courage! If that's not heroic enough for a VC, well then you deserve free drinks for the rest of your life. I did the same in 07 left flank assault on a bunker with 3 enemy inside it, my fire support had a hard stoppage on the GPMG which left my grenadier and myself exposed we ended up individual FM towards the position I threw my 109 and stormed the bunker killing all 3 insurgents, only then to be hit with a RPG both myself and Pte took major shrapnel. After picking ourself up we made it back only to have another greater opposition trying to over run us. As you can tell the section made it out with the help of a F15 and a 500ib landing 50M away. The Pte got nothing I was awarded an MID. I'm just happy I'm here and living life to the max. SFSH🤘🏻
