Talking Heads - I Zimbra live - Letterman 1983 (Higher Quality)

  • Talking Heads performing I Zimbra live on Late Night in 1983. Better quality than any current clip of this performance on TH-cam.
    Source: Great quality SP speed normal VHS videotape in mono (master) from over air TV broadcast. Note: Pre-1986 ,very few people had consumer VCRs with ability to record MTS/HiFi stereo and only one station (WNBC4-NY) was broadcasting in stereo in 1984-1985.
    Black and white on colored background video effect was added as a desired effect when broadcast (wish they did not do it!). Intro and exit is normal as you can see.

    I worked on the show. This was one of my TV career highlights. I was the ONLY person in the audience during rehearsal, which was so much BETTER than this performance, for which I was off-stage...

    The thing that always amazes me is how Jerry Harrison flies under the radar. To begin with, he was the guy that gave the band serious street cred coming from Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. On this song, he's playing that opening riff which Robert Fripp came up with, and it is by no means an easy part to play well, yet he totally nails it. He deserves much more credit than he receives, IMHO>

      more than all that - which I totally agree with - he can also play the part that Alex Weir is playing here, I've seen him play it in other live stuff ..
      Byrne is/was a great rhythm guitarist, but Harrison is a real architect.

      they don't need street cred, that's just another term for insecurity (that restricts art & creativity) so i fundamentally disagree with you on that. but the rest of what you say is fine. btw jonathan richman wouldn't hold a candle to TH, so he upgraded.

    • @joeyoungs8426
      @joeyoungs8426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And my opinion as well. I always recognized his significant contributions to the TH. Also my opinion that his ‘The Red and the Black’ album brought it to fore. Dude was not just a backing musician to Bryne’s ‘genius’. Nor were Weymouth and Franz. For me they were something of a super group minus the legacy cache of that term.
      Edit: And just browse the roster on that album. Some serious heavy hitters.

    It’s so interesting to see Lynn Mabry’s transition from backing up Sly Stone, to P-Funk, to being one of the original Brides of Funkenstein, to Talking Heads. I hope she one day writes a book or something. She’s simply amazing! ♥️

      Nice call. I knew I had seen her before. My very first 45rpm was Everyday People. I am a sucker for 70's funk. Then Ohio Players and Parliament/Funkadelic? I have been to a couple P-Funk show over the years and it stays with me. I've even seen the Mothership in the Black History museum in DC. I have a wonderful photo, but don't know how to post it here.

    2:51 That ending, haha! With Letterman shaking hands with a few at first, then Lynn not wanting to miss out, so Dave says "No, I'm not done" and they have a fun hug, cracking up the whole band. Lynn Mabry with the fun hug and Dolette McDonald smiling and laughing out loud... so fun.

    It never ceases to amaze me as to how many different moves David Byrne came / comes up with. Love the bit in Stop Making Sense where David points the mic at the camera man and smirks, pure ad lib moment as if to say here, you have a go. He's a bit of a nutter but it works, you have to be different if you want to be noticed. Anyone that has dared to be different is usually successful.

    I prefer the original arrangement of this song on the "Fear of Music" album. By the way. the lyricac are based on a 1916 sound poem called "Gadji Beri Bimba" by the German poet Hugo Ball, who was a big name in the Dada art movement.

    One question to the experts here: Who is the female singer on the left side? On the right is Dolette McDonald but the other singer? Nona Hendrix?

    • @EdwoodCA
      @EdwoodCA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I an not an expert, but man... spent way too much time scouring photos.... fairly certain it's Lynn Mabry next to Dolette McDonald. Lynn was teamed up with Edna Holt for the "Stop Making Sense" film. Maybe the personnel changed during the 1983 and/or tour. Dolette was going from one top act to another back in the day. Just stellar. [Nona Hendryx did sing backup with Talking Heads at times, but I think that was around 1980 vs 1983. I could be very wrong, though.]
