Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was my intro to Metal Gear. Thankfully I didn't hit my head too many times, and the story isn't as confusing to jump into as I was told. Lots of nouns, lots of named events, but in Rising, action's the focus - so let's talk big revengeance.
Rising is very good - yeah it's a screamer, it's got all kinds of annoying little bits, but they're annoying in the moment. It's the kind of game, like Ninja Gaiden, that'll make you want to do better. It's called self-care sweetie, and it starts with the parry button.

MGR Revengeance deserves a remaster and a sequel
Sequel? Yes. The game holds up pretty well visually, especially on PC, doesn't need the remaster imo.
Even if they just release it again on new consoles without any changes I'd buy it all over again

The moment that made me say "HELL YEAH!" is when during Armstrong fight Raiden basically said something along the line of : "My sword is a tool of justice, then again this isn't my sword"
Googled it, it's "I said my sword was a tool of justice. Not used in anger. Not used for vengeance. But now... Now I'm not so sure. And besides, this isn't my sword."
And you're right, that quote was perfection.
Then the beginning of it has to be this way starts and you’re like holy shit... this is it. Also the fact that Sam’s sword is passed down to Ridan and throughout the game the bosses have been making Ridan think differently is just awesome

I mean if you listen to in-game codec conversations they even explain that he IS in fact swordmaster from a lineage of swordmasters running a Brazilian Dojo with JP roots (hence his HF Blade was a family heirloom katana reforged into one!) after which they LITERALLY call him samurai from Brazil.
@@Ghostel3591 Yeah, but I'm saying that the connection between the name Sam and the word Samurai never clicked for me until now, not that I didn't realize the katana-wielding, bushido-ass dude who's introduced as Sundowner's bodyguard was supposed to be a modern day Samurai.
@@Ghostel3591 I just never got that his name was a pun is all. I obviously understood he was a Samurai, but in my head I never called him "Sam the Samurai" so it never clicked before. He was always Jetstream Sam or Samuel Rodriguez, which is a lot less obvious.
I'm glad someone else gets that Jack the Ripper was actually completely fine and not in any way a regression of Raiden's arc
I thought it made sense, but Revengeance was my first Metal Gear game as well so *shrug*.

Its not the plot point for me, right? Its just... its just the build up to it like it was so.... so needlessly edgy, right? like he stabbed himself just to go Jack, that's- that's pretty silly and unnecessary, right? And to have some nobody whatever out of nowhere character like monsoon somebody with no profile no nothing comin at you live with the news flash of you being some killer... I mean like I'm not trying to be some asshole it sounds a tad ludicrous, right? I mean fuck I dunno man I don't think I should be writing this I might get my feelings hurt...
Again like the build up to the plot point not the plot point in question I thought that was pretty cool too....
@@yes.6892 I think the reason it kinda works is the buildup from the section before, with Sam taunting you and the whole realization that a lot of the cyborgs you're killing really didn't have any options and were taken advantage of. I definitely agree that Monsoon comes out of nowhere though with no real attachment, I'll give you that.
@@Garland846 Which makes sense considering how bad his mental state was in the end of mgs 2. In Rising he is just like: Hey guys you should give up and accept your traumatic experience as a source of temporary power up. This not only goes against everything he learned from Snake and series theme of not accepting your fate. This destroyed key point of his character by making him another Big Boss.

@@dracogatom7873 to be fair platinum games has not put out a decent title since bayo 2 so now it's more along the lines of "My old favorite place came back with a 5 star meal and the new place has been giving me repackaged mcdonalds food

@@princemwamba5230 yep. You get a lot of healings there, enemies are the same, but the healings carry you to the win.
@@Narukami930 If you focus on just one weapon in Ninja Gaiden 2 at least you should consistently have enough essence to have full healing items pretty much all the time at least that was my experience with my first playthrough where I decided to go Dragon Sword only. YMMV but since I was a total newbie to the series and still didn't burn through healing faster than I could replenish it so it's certainly feasible.
As someone who got utterly wined, dined, ass fucked and left in the dead of night byt Ninja Gaiden Black, same.

8:53 There is a solution for this! Which is absolutely NOT taught by the game. When you have grenades or rocket launcher equipped, instead of holding the button to aim, just press it and it will do a quick draw. If you're locked on it will be as efficient as if you aimed and you can get back in the action quicker. It's been very useful on subsequent playthroughs!
If this game was harder and actually taught you how to play it may be the greatest of all time

@@enrique7934 IKR... the game literally makes them into collectibles for you and puts it on easy access, you don't even have to go back to the main menu for it.
@@aidan8473 that wouldnt solve the weakest elememt to me. Which is secondary melee weapons. Swapping weapons and their limited combos are like the only things it does weakly

Metal Gear Rising was also my intro to Metal Gear. I just started playing this game recently too, so this is perfect.

All these years later, and I'm *still* banging my head to this soundtrack.
Hands down one of the better reviews of this game I have ever seen! Even when the game is talked about to death you manage to bring in things never really talked about. Make me facepalm myself for not seeing it sooner.
Jesus that review was hype as hell. Then again, is there anything that MGRR's tracks cant do that to?
I found a way to get through this game fairly easily: Spam parry by constantly tapping the right stick forward during enemy attack phases. The only thing this didn't work on (in Normal mode) was the final boss.
Great job for replicating the exact adrenaline of this game boss fight in that last quarter of the video. Even with its shortcoming, this game is worth remembering for its absolute high action video game moment.
The real mechanic that makes this game so unique is the fact that there is no blocking button, no parry. The only way for blocking flawlessly incoming attacks is to sync your attacks to the incoming blows.
Definitely in my top 3 of hack n slash games.
"Mistral wants you to focus on her." Yeah, I kind of noticed that as she was plugging those extra arms into her back. She intentionally modified her body to give her little climaxes when she starts adding parts. That's the most "down bad" cry for attention I've ever seen in a fictional character.

Could you picture the now young adult george in his cyborg body, following in his heroes footsteps fighting for justice only to come to the realisation that war and bloodshed isn't as heroic or glorious as what he thought, culminating in a final fight against raiden as he trys to pull him back to the light.
God I replayed this game more times than I can remember.

This is easily one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time. Every boss theme is literally perfect

oh the learning curve of this game was so fun. On my first play trough i had no clue how to parry. But oh when i did i went on to Defeat mistral S rank on hard. Something i never thought i'd do when i first booted it up. and now i have 80.1 hours put in to it.

I’ve spent nearly 200+ hours on this game. Bought it 2014 one year later after it’s official release. This game, is one that i never get tired of. Even though it has some flaws gameplay wise, the thing i love about MGRR is the replay value by doing different challenge runs. The most infamous challenge run is doing a new game on revengeance mode, and you cannot buy any upgrades except the nine buyable skills in the customization menu. You must stay at 100.0%HP and 1 fuel cell bar. On revengeance mode the fuel cell bar drains super quick, however once you gain access to ripper mode you can activate it and go into BM the fuel cell bar drains slower when you’re in ripper for some reason. But it helps during the sundowner or senator steven fight when you’re required to cut with pin point accuracy. Overall this game is great and underrated in my opinion, though the memes do give some light into this batshit crazy hack’n slash.
Epic game, and totally agree that the rush is immense when you finally pick up some skills and replay levels to become more of a badass Cyberninja. But holy hell, Armstrong is likely still one of the hardest VG bosses
The director learned from off screen attacks when they made Transformers: Devastation. Cannot recommend that game enough, it broke the dodge button on my old controller
God I wish this game got a sequel, maybe after Platinum's done microing like 4 projects at once.
Most people don't notice it but when you stun a guy and activate Cutting Mode your reticle DEFAULTS TO THE PLACE YOU NEED TO CUT to get it perfectly. And 80% of the time you don't need to move at all if you are in range of the target.
Nothing got me more pumped than when the lyrics would kick in during boss fights

imo, the worst part of Konami’s fuckery with Kojima’s studio is the fact that we will never get a sequel to this game, this was the most satisfying action game I’ve ever played, and that’s saying something

So, if I had to distill your video into one single point, especially following the line of "your either learn to parry by ear or position better," it's this: Rising is a banger of a character action game, just like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry.
(Side note: learning to avoid or counter enemy attacks by audio cues has been around since Devil May Cry 3. This isn't new, and it's been in there for people who want to explore the skill ceiling of any Capcom/Platinum character action game. It's even in Monster Hunter, for Dante's sake.)

An incredible game with iconic stuff happening every couple of minutes. A definite must-play even for people unfamiliar with either Metal Gear or action games in general. This game has the most legitimate fuckin *hype* you've ever seen in your life, and it's happening within 10 minutes of gameplay starting.

Might made right, it just so happens that the person who came out on top cared for justice. And it's implied that Raiden even agreeded with Armstrong wholeheartedly, he would just never admit it out loud. It's literally in the the song.

Also, Raiden points out, himself, that he's "not so sure" about his sword being a "tool of justice" at the moment, and that it doesn't matter anyway because he's using Sam's sword.
There's a lot going on in Revengance going on with the writing that it will never get the credit it deserves for.

Whenever someone agrees with Armstrong I just facepalm. They don’t seem to think much of it.
Then again this game doesn’t really encourage “thinking” in the moment so that’s understandable. Just bathe in this awesome robo bloodbath!
With MGS 2 he rejected player control, while he falters in MGS4 in his beliefs, he comes back in the end. Personally. My head canon is that it ends there and he has a happy ending, MGR is more of a what if story to me. It's been a while since I played and looked at everything, but this is my personal conclusion

I fuckin adore this game and I play it on a semi regular basis to this day, I never don't have it installed on my laptop, I'm so glad to see someone talk about it again.
For a game I bought at 7-11, MGR absolutely rocked my world.
This right here is why mgrr is one of my favourite games of all time.
The final boss is one of the best most climatic satisfying battles of videogames ever from the metal gear phase to the final machoman phase is 10/10

This game is actually pretty hard on the highest difficulties. If you're going for top ranks you'll LEARN to use all mechanics. Red phosphorus grenades, enp grenades, the Sai, the stealth options and secret routes, the guns and more. By the way, many people don't know you only need to frame the lock on of the zandatsu vertically or horizontally (a cross will mark it with a sound as well) and press either square for horizontal slash or triangle for vertical slash... No need to do the right joystick thing all the time. This was one of my favorite games back when it came out, it carried the genre for a while tbh. Getting the platinum trophy for this game was no joke. You should play Vanquish as well.

But Kbash at the end of the day Might MAKES RIGHT and Raiden Won, so his ideologies didn't win the day, his MIGHT did. Armstrong was 100% right.
Raiden didn’t win through his own might alone. He was aided by the weak he protected, namely the dog.
Exactly as Starscream Said, Might did NOT make right, Reciprocal Aid did
in the end he passed some of his ideologies over to Riden, and not just him, almost EVERY boss in the game passes something on to Riden.

Fun facts I've only found out now:
You can quick-use subweapons by just tapping the subweapon key. This means quick-firing your RPG or Stinger, or quickly throwing an EMP grenade to stun your enemies.
You can walk during blade mode by either holding the ninja run button (on keyboard) or clicking in the left stick (on controllers)
You can animation cancel most if not all attacks by quickly going into and then out of blade mode.
Got the platinum on this and I’m sure 8 years of my life was shaved off

The preorder dlc that i got woth my ebay copy really helped covered me worh my struggles in blade mode. As for the boss that ya had to cut his shield perfectly or get exploded when messed up i just jumped over him and hit his back till he died since i couldnt use the shield.

Flipping loved this game… After I finally understood how to run up rockets and take down helicopters and parry. I didn’t fully figure out parry until the final fight against Sam, because it was not a suggestion anymore. 😅
My sink or swim moment with the parry was Monsoon, it's either be a parry god or use EMPs to get rid of his stupid invulnerability mode and I ran out of EMPs so yeah... Easily one of my top difficulty spikes in my gaming carreer and the onyl boss that can't be cheesed by the infinite ripper mode wig in NG+.

I remember playing this game, being angry that it doesn't have dodge, mastering the heck out of the parry and blade mode for healing, finishing the game, loving it. Then, on my 2nd playthrough, I've looked up bonus moves to unlock and found... a dodge. And freakin' game hid it from me. And yeah, dodging sucked, but still

Yeah this basically summed up my experience with the game better than I ever could. Shame the PS3 version kinda has some performance issues cause that also ended up being a barrier for me wanting to invest time in the game
This is also my first MG game too and I honestly enjoyed it. Started playing it earlier this summer and just been raising the difficulty with each playthrough. Currently on Very Hard and its the first real challenge as of now and just been having fun with the game slicing as many limbs as I can to be best Ninja Blender, or Hokage, whichever one is best.

I actually forgot that you could do multiple strikes in slow motion. For some reason I thought that the precise strike with the analog stick was the only option. I did the _entire_ game using only precision hits to kill _every_ enemy and boss.

Just finished this game before watching the vid, big mgs fan was put off by it being a spin off and never paid attention to it when it was released. Now I've been binge playing platinum games and got around to it and i must say i am a fool to ever think this game was lacking as a mgs game. The story and themes are perfect.
