  • Power up the Volume as a Duchess and a Duke, a Princess and a Princess Coronation storm through Neville Grove.
    If that's not enough, more classic Crewe steam products star in the form of a Stanier 8F and a Riddles 9F in this action packed video edited with real sound.
    The big namers here are the superb Hornby OO gauge models, each custom weathered for clients or to form part of my own collection.
    In order of appearance we have the following in action:
    Stanier 8F: 48045
    46229 DUCHESS OF HAMILTON,
    71000 DUKE OF GLOUCESTER,
    46207 PRINCESS ARTHUR OF CONNAUGHT,
    92249 Riddles 9F,
    46256 Princess Coronation: SIR WILLIAM A STANIER FRS
    Archive sound recordings were made by Peter Handford and feature courtesy of Old Thundridge Records. These have been supplemented with recordings by @northumbriansteamphotography and from my own collection.

    The height created by the upper loops makes for such an impressive layout, especially with the loco shed at the bottom giving a real sense of depth and scale. The upper level feels like eye level from what I gather in these clips and I feel that really completes the feeling of standing by a real railway.

    I think my most favorite part is that there is always motion, there is always a train passing by- to me that conveys that there is always progress going on aside from just being dynamic and giving the eye something to track (lol). And maybe I’m reminded of the joy of the railways series when models similar to this were used- more believable than animation but cleaner than reality, it given me something to think on, to wonder, and to dream of whether or not it’s possible to have steam locomotives with none of the obsolescence.
    The vid also givens me inspiration that a build your own railroad game would do well to have capacity for such dynamic interaction as seen here- make it feel like it’s all in motion like a great symphony.

      Thanks very much glad you enjoyed. Yes agreed about the crew, I’ve fitted them in my locos but not all my customers want them fitted so they remain driverless! 😂 I’m currently less convinced about fitting smoke though at OO gauge (price and scale issues), that’s the main reason for the layout being set in high summer as steam isn’t visible on a hot day anyway 😉

    There's a proper Duchess, 46256, in the best livery the class ever wore with those modern Ivatt refinements. A right shame she wasn't held in the same regard as 60007 or even 46201.

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Stephen thanks for watching. I can see what you mean there are similarities I suppose, but the whistles used here are 100% correct. They are taken from the exact types of locos in real life. The LMS locos (the maroon ones) have “Stanier hooters” whilst Duke of Gloucester has a “chime whistle” similar to that used on Mallard and all the other A4’s amongst several other types here in the UK. The 9F on the freight near the end has a higher pitched and more conventional sounding whistle, again this was taken from a recording from a real 9F. As far as possible I always use the sounds as accurately as possible, even down to the speed of the sound / number of wheel revolutions on the model, as well as use of the Doppler effect. Hope this helps, Steve.
