Is nobody gonna talk about how mama let out a soft purring noise when Victoria was crying? Kinda like she was trying to comfort her by going into a gentle/calming mother like state.
That's the beauty of this movie.. The writers hypothesize that ghosts ARE emotions. Strong, powerful emotions bent out of shape stuck to repeat themselves.
I cried when I first saw this, like when lily and mama was falling, their face to face connection had me so sad. Like that was pure love. And Lily chose to go with mama, she let Victoria go, I'm sure she would have let Lily go if she had wanted to. Not say mama in the wrong, that's selfish of her, but still. They had a choice.
JJ PurpleSheep the love it showed between them, ugh I was ugly crying! I miss my mom so much, and it makes me think maybe when I see her in the after life, it’ll be that awesome too. 🥺
I don’t see it as love, if you pay attention to the undertones in the movie I’m pretty sure it holds a deeper much more realistic meaning. Pretty sure it symbolizes toxic relationships between a child and a emotionally dependent mother. Real love is knowing when to let go, not driving a five year old to her death. Children can’t make choices like that, it’s their parents job to keep them from harm until they are old enough to make that decision. I doubt lily even knew the full concept of death. it’s the same reason why a child can’t consent or drink under age, because they don’t have the mental capacity to understand consequences
This reminds me so much of that very last scene in the movie "Corpse Bride" were Emily turns into a bunch of butterflies and flies away into the afterlife. Not to mention that this movie in particular has a lot of Tim Burton vibes to it.
The dads the one who murdered the mom, and then took the kids and tried to murder them in a cabin, and then mama killed him and raised the kids in the cabin in the woods
Hearing and seeing Lily's laughing and touching Mama's face while they embrace always broke me everytime. It goes to show how much Lily loves Mama.... Lily didnt understand what was going on, other than the fact that she's happy because she is with Mama. But to us, the audience, we know what will happen, and for me that is heart-breaking, no matter how many time I watch this movie...
That's why it's annoying when stupid people say, "I'm so happy for lily and mama" they both got what they wanted when really one did, the other was a dumb vulnerable bratty 5 year old who needed the back cheeks painted red with a belt
As a mother, this scene is so heart breaking. To separate two sisters so one can be raised happily and to have the youngest go with mama. And the way Mama doesn’t let Lily see what’s happening, just cloaks her in darkness and those final moments where lily and mama are finally happy and at peace.... ugh...
The fact that Mama respected her decision was beautiful but the sisters separation was cruel, elder wanted to begin life again while younger never knowing anything outside her Mama wanted things to stay the same, cruel but beautiful as always Gullermo is an amazing director.
Regardless of how scary and violent Edith (Mama) can be, I have to give her credit where it's due. She saved the girls when their own father would have killed them and raised them as well as an undead creature could. Sure it wasn't the most stable of homes or childhoods for the girls, but at least you couldn't doubt her love for them.
He was failing financially, so he took his daughters out to a cabin in the woods, and was about to kill them, but Mama came and killed him first before she took on the role of their parent.

Homestly mama is sort of a good mama. I understand why she was the way she was and did what she did. Anabelle walks in with laundry like "Hey Mama can you help me fold these clothes?"

I was crying hysterically after I saw how the girl reacts to that corpse's face being so close to her .... Being a mother of a baby girl i could actually feel the peace in that entity's face
I love how people are trying to defend mama but NOOO if she really loved them she would have sacrificed her happiness to see the ones she love live a happy life she could have let lily stay and be with Victoria she could have been like a second mama in a different world instead of talking lily with her sadly having her die😥😭
Mama's not defendable. But Mama is also not a person, she's a *remnant* of a person. And one who was mentally unstable in life to boot. "If she really loved them..." is something you'd say about a human being with the internal capacity to process their baggage. I don't think Mama *can* internally process the emotions and desires that shaped her, because they are in essence all she is. Like they say in the film, she is an "emotion bent out of shape, condemned to repeat itself, time and time again until it rights the wrong that was done". And I think Mama taking Lily with her into her ghostly state finally righted that wrong. While WE might view the wrong Mama needs to right as "committing murder and then doing a murder-suicide with her baby and then killing more people as a ghost" Mama seems to think the wrong is "losing her baby during the fall off the cliff". So taking Lily with her forever gives Mama closure--not closure in order to stop being a ghost entirely, but closure that allows her to change from an emotion of anguish to an emotion of peace. I think that's what the blue light was about, when Lily and Mama were falling and looking at each other. I don't think Lily purposefully intended to help Mama stop being an angry ghost (too young to grasp Mama's story, she just wanted to be with Mama). But ultimately by joining with Mama, Lily did right Mama's wrong, and changed the nature of their now-mutual spirit. So was it okay for Mama to kill Lily? Absolutely not (and she definitely did kill Lily). But Mama was going to keep terrorizing and murdering everyone like a broken record until something happened to make Mama feel like the wrong had been righted. The baby corpse didn't work. So Lily took one for the team. And thank goodness going with Mama was something Lily wanted. Albeit Lily was a small feral child who couldn't make decisions in her own best interests...but still, she died happy (and presumably stayed content after death too). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it was Lily’s choice to be with Mama. Lily grew up with Mama so she’s already attached but Victoria on the other not so much. It was kinda a sad ending, but Lily was happy anyway to be with Mama (edit) I feel like people are misunderstanding me haha. It doesn’t matter if Mama is evil or not, or if her love is selfish or not. Mama is the only parental figure in Lily’s life for so long. And Annabelle’s affection for a few weeks just won’t simply replace Mama in Lily’s eyes. Lily is still a child, she can’t tell the difference. She only went with the most familiar and constant figure in her life and that’s Mama. Whereas Victoria still remembers her real family, different with Lily. Victoria knows that Mama is not her real mother and old enough to see that maybe Mama’s intention is not that good. Just because Lily has a moment with Annabelle won’t make Lily choose her, who is essentially an acquaintance at best. Just like how you meet your long lost aunt and have a “bond” with her, you won’t just simply up and leave your mother to go live with said aunt.
@@rosesweetcharlotteI don't understand how some of you still don't get it. Anabelle saw her family and mama both and that's why re bonded with her uncle. Lily was 1 when abandoned and mama is her mother figure.
@@grimmywizard yea but Lily bonded with them as well and that’s when mama when crazy cause she felt them slipping away If mama didn’t go crazy Lily definitely would of grown it love her uncle and Annabel
Lily was underaged. She also felt bond with Annabel. I could see she felt warmth that Mama couldn't give ever. If mama's love was real, she would giver future. It was alll because of her stupidass shelfish obssession. I swore a lot tbh.
“Oh, the younger one? She was just kidnapped by an angry spirit, who then dove straight off a cliff with said child and exploded into a flock of butterflies.”
I remember I cried during this ending.. the sisters had to separate because their love are stick to different mama.. Older sister to new stepmom, while younger sister was to the ghost mama.. I almost forgot that this was a horror movie..
Here’s what actually went in here Mama when she was alive was in a mental institution and had a disability But when she had her child, she ran away so it wouldn’t be taken. She reached a dead end which was the cliff. She didn’t want to be away from her baby so she jumped. On the way down she hit a branch and she hit the water and died. But her baby was on the brand hangin. So when she became a ghost her baby didn’t die with her so she spent a long time looking for her baby. But the little girls were in a cabin and there father was going to kill them but mama stopped him. But mama couldn’t move on until she went back to the cliff and brought a child with her. So her and that little girl went into the afterlife together like her and her baby were meant to.
arain764niara a mean technically if you think about it she’s a lost soul, she didn’t actually do anything wrong she just tried to protect her baby and fell to her death trying to save themselves
She’s not a murderer and if I had two little girls that I saved AND raised I wouldn’t just hand them over to the twin brother of somebody who tried to kill them tf no she did what she had to oKaY
•Hyper Vision• that’s not what the situation was tho lol. She would rather jump off a cliff with her baby than let it grow up in an asylum and suffer. Letting your kids suffer isn’t good. Now at the end she was taking HER kids with her so that they could be together. Victoria wanted to stay but Lily wanted to with her mom and now she is plain and simple
I think they used the "butterfly" concept because it is widely believed that butterflies are a sign of spiritual contact, especially blue ones. It is also believed that the dead visit their loved ones in the form of butterflies.
I loved the movie but kinda hated the ending why did the little girl have to die with her every mother would want there child alive as long as they can be even if it is hard for the little girl at first she was still young and had much time to recover
1) Victoria saying to lily she’s going to stay (Victoria stay) 2) lily wanting her to come 3) Victoria calling out to her 4) Annabelle begging mama to give her back and calling her “baby” This ending gets me every time! 🥺😭
I really love how Mama cloaks Lilly's vision so she doesn't see what's about to happen and that she could finally be happy and at peace with Mama. Man this scene was really powerful! I distinctly remember seeing one of my friends, an absolute unit of an oak who benches 250 kg (551 lbs) a day, bawl in the theatres at this scene.
The ending was so painful to watch the first time I saw this movie, but in a way, that's what made this movie even less of a horror film and more of a emotional and beautiful film.
lily and victoria is not her real daughter. yet she's give them the biggest love i ever seen. from the start of the movie she protect lily and victoria until the end of the movie. this movie is not scary at all. this movie show's us how big is a mother love for her children. love this movie till the end.
Everytime I see this scene, I feel more melancholic rather than being creeped out. Mama really did put her love and care into Victoria and Lilly-look at the way she tries to comfort Victoria when she cries, how she drops to her knees to be at eye level with her, and how protectively she holds Lilly. Mama (Edith, was it?) truly was a restless soul with an unjust end. I feel sorry for her. Regardless, try explaining this one to the system.
Guillermo del Toro at his best That man is a genius. He can break your heart or send you screaming from the room in horror. Absolutely brilliant and one of my favorite producers.
Now I hear what other people hear. Before Victoria says Lilly when she sees the butterfly when Lilly flies on Victoria's hand you can hear a little whisper saying "Lilly" it's like Lilly is telling Victoria that she's still here in spirit form. It makes me cry
GrayDino Gamer At least Lily is Mama's new daughter and they're both Beautiful butterflies watching over her older sister in the Spring. After Mama loves them both.
Hated the mama character so much during the entire film First she kills herself and her own child, then she practically kidnaps two unrelated girls and when they give her back her child she still wants the girls. Sad story my ass, she's a child murderer kidnaper.
The valuable lesson is: "Calling someone a parent is not because or related about blood. It's because or about love, care and support the other one can give to us."

This movie is such a beautiful mix of scary and emotional. The story is such a good and strong one, not to mention how much symbolism there is and how much it adds to it. This was the first horror movie I ever watched and I still love it to bits, it’s my absolute favorite.
I steel can feel what Victoria felt😭😭😭because i just lost my mom either😢😢😢the ending it was makes me cry..my father and my mother just past away 6 month ago..
I cried so much too...for the mother, but especially for the little sisters. I could never imagine to have to live my life without my brother. It's unconditional love.
If you are a mother. You will let your children go or do what makes them happy, but in a good way. Where they can share good things to other people, and as long as it won’t harm them. That’s just my opinion anyway.
supernatural skittles the day of the day of the day of the day of the day of the year r u doing well in the morning or not you have to do so I am going do not want the special needs and offers the same time as the first time in
I know why this movie doesn't have good ratings. It's easier for people like me who have relied so heavily on someone who has been a parental-figure for us and have been forced to lose that individual to relate to. It's harrowing. It takes your heart right out of your body. It's like losing a parent over and over again. It's so easy for those of us with parental issues to cling so tightly to people we look up to and to have to let them go results in the worst pain you can ever imagine.
One thing I’m noticing now years later as I’m re-watching this is the first time mama died it was she had her baby wrapped up in those dark blankets all cradled. And then when she jumped off the cliff fleeing for her life the reason she was in such the distressed spiritual state she’s in now was because she hit the water and drowned but the baby hit the branch and died up there. So I find it interesting come the second time around with Lily they’re both wrapped up in the blanket this time and they both go out on the branch instead of in the water.

So Lily took one for the team. And thank goodness going with Mama was something Lily wanted. Albeit Lily was a small feral child who couldn't make decisions in her own best interests...but still, she died happy (and presumably stayed content after death too). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@madmaudlin8503 I strongly agree with you.
it was Lily’s choice to be with Mama. Lily grew up with Mama so she’s already attached but Victoria on the other not so much. It was kinda a sad ending, but Lily was happy anyway to be with Mama
(edit) I feel like people are misunderstanding me haha.
Lily was, like, four.
She’s literally a child
@@rosesweetcharlotteI don't understand how some of you still don't get it. Anabelle saw her family and mama both and that's why re bonded with her uncle. Lily was 1 when abandoned and mama is her mother figure.
@@grimmywizard yea but Lily bonded with them as well and that’s when mama when crazy cause she felt them slipping away
If mama didn’t go crazy Lily definitely would of grown it love her uncle and Annabel
Lily was underaged. She also felt bond with Annabel. I could see she felt warmth that Mama couldn't give ever. If mama's love was real, she would giver future. It was alll because of her stupidass shelfish obssession. I swore a lot tbh.
It's amazing how much love a mother has for her child love forever
I would call it love more like selfishness considering the little girl dies

I remember I cried during this ending.. the sisters had to separate because their love are stick to different mama.. Older sister to new stepmom, while younger sister was to the ghost mama.. I almost forgot that this was a horror movie..
Godamn it I cry everytime I watch this movie. This movie is more sad than scary.
Dear Skelley well i feel bad for mama
Dear Skelley not really but actually ur right
Mia the pokemon same she just wanted a child .

This movie is an underrated gem.

@@wasimshaikh-pp2de Are you stupid?
Here’s what actually went in here
Mama when she was alive was in a mental institution and had a disability
But when she had her child, she ran away so it wouldn’t be taken.
But Why Their Father Wanted TO KILL Them??
Anuja Baglane the father was a business man who ended up losing all his fortune which drove him into a mental state and tried to kill his family
Ooo thx..
So wouldn't she go to 'hell's as she did kill peopel
arain764niara a mean technically if you think about it she’s a lost soul, she didn’t actually do anything wrong she just tried to protect her baby and fell to her death trying to save themselves
I just love people trying to justify Mama. She was a murderer and a selfish person
santiago sancho lol "mama"
Yes thank you! When she threw her actual baby for the other girls I flipped my shit. That was beyond selfish
She’s not a murderer and if I had two little girls that I saved AND raised I wouldn’t just hand them over to the twin brother of somebody who tried to kill them tf no she did what she had to oKaY
Paris For real tho I guess killing your own kids is okay
She's not dead she's just turned to butterflies
I just said it turned into butterflies
I know I'm just trying to say is she didn't just go away when they died
@@daisanstewart2140 it was dead for the lily's family. stay alive for mama. just simple.
I guess that kinda makes sense
1) Victoria saying to lily she’s going to stay (Victoria stay)
2) lily wanting her to come
3) Victoria calling out to her
4) Annabelle begging mama to give her back and calling her “baby”
This ending gets me every time! 🥺😭
I really love how Mama cloaks Lilly's vision so she doesn't see what's about to happen and that she could finally be happy and at peace with Mama. Man this scene was really powerful!
I distinctly remember seeing one of my friends, an absolute unit of an oak who benches 250 kg (551 lbs) a day, bawl in the theatres at this scene.
at first i that mama was a scary movie but this ending is so beautiful 😭

The ending was so painful to watch the first time I saw this movie, but in a way, that's what made this movie even less of a horror film and more of a emotional and beautiful film.
Respect to Mama, despite the Mental State she had. She has the unwaivering spirit of a real Mother

lily and victoria is not her real daughter. yet she's give them the biggest love i ever seen. from the start of the movie she protect lily and victoria until the end of the movie. this movie is not scary at all. this movie show's us how big is a mother love for her children. love this movie till the end.

Blood does not make family so sure she is not biological but she is their mom
This movie went from a jump scare horror to a real tear jerker. The authors wrote it well
This movie is very rare in this genre because is not a horror movie but a tragedy
Yea one of my last thoughts after watching this was “well thats definitely not gonna hold up in court…”😂
2:30 awwww so cute and at least the mother is not a mean one anymore but now is caring...
This scene made me cry bitterly 😭😭😢😢😭😢😢😭

Hated the mama character so much during the entire film
First she kills herself and her own child, then she practically kidnaps two unrelated girls and when they give her back her child she still wants the girls. Sad story my ass, she's a child murderer kidnaper.
TheOUTSIDER She doesn't kill herself her husband kills her the kid died because it had no one to care for it.

Ya good luck explaining that those two people were killed by a ghost. Especially the lady that was trying to take the kids lol

Its not their mother though.
The valuable lesson is: "Calling someone a parent is not because or related about blood. It's because or about love, care and support the other one can give to us."
Technically,Lily didn’t die,she turned into a butterfly,

Truth be said the love between a mother and a child is out of this world
This movie is such a beautiful mix of scary and emotional. The story is such a good and strong one, not to mention how much symbolism there is and how much it adds to it.
This was the first horror movie I ever watched and I still love it to bits, it’s my absolute favorite.
This scene gets me everytime, for as haunting and scary as this film can get theres an underlying beauty in the ending.
Dis movie not even scary it’s actually sad.
“Por que no los dos”
So your saying the movie mama is like the movie black water we're the spirit took the mother instead of the daughter.
Mama has a very Corpse Bride/Burtonesque ending.

If you are a mother. You will let your children go or do what makes them happy, but in a good way. Where they can share good things to other people, and as long as it won’t harm them. That’s just my opinion anyway.
This scene was actually beautiful the ghost is now in peace and so is the little girl

I almost cried of its inner beauty. just wonderful!!
a mother's love is forever 🥺🥺
i love my mom
I know why this movie doesn't have good ratings. It's easier for people like me who have relied so heavily on someone who has been a parental-figure for us and have been forced to lose that individual to relate to. It's harrowing. It takes your heart right out of your body. It's like losing a parent over and over again. It's so easy for those of us with parental issues to cling so tightly to people we look up to and to have to let them go results in the worst pain you can ever imagine.
xstalkmedownn someone who gets it
Mama loved Lilly and Lily's sister
One thing I’m noticing now years later as I’m re-watching this is the first time mama died it was she had her baby wrapped up in those dark blankets all cradled. And then when she jumped off the cliff fleeing for her life the reason she was in such the distressed spiritual state she’s in now was because she hit the water and drowned but the baby hit the branch and died up there. So I find it interesting come the second time around with Lily they’re both wrapped up in the blanket this time and they both go out on the branch instead of in the water.
Director Del Toro is a genius and Jessica Chastain is an awesome actress
Mama had spend a whole eternity with them. Of course she would love them as her own as well.
