There are several different terms used for stone balustrade, such as balustrades or stone balustrading. Of course stone balustrade is made up of balustrade piers / plinths, hand-rails and there are endless different styles of balusters. The style of the baluster is the main part that gives the balustrade its particular look, whether its an old style baluster, like a Tudor teardrop baluster, or a more modern baluster. This can completely change the look and style of the cast stone balustrade.
UK BUILDING REGULATIONS FOR CLASSIC CAST STONE BALUSTER SPACING.
If the balustrade that you are planing need to meet current UK building regulations, i.e. the 100mm sphere tule, the balusters will need to be closer than the traditional 12 inch centres and you will also need to use spacer rods in order to meet this 100mm gap rule. Classic teardrop balusters will not meet the current UK building regulations without the use of spacer rods / bars.
We have found that although the use of spacer rods / bars is unavoidable in order to meet current UK building regulations, if the spacer rods / bars are painted black before they are installed, they are not visible to a casual observer or passer-by. The eye is drawn to the classic teardrop shape of the balusters, and the overall look of the stone balustrade, rather than the black spacer rods / bars.

Hi there I also make these I have some of the exact same moulds ....do you add any hardener in yours..I find some of ours chip quite easily and are quite pourous
I use very good white cement and waterproofer which seals in the water and speeds up the hardening, and makes it stronger as well.
@@Welleydog I can't find anyone around ireland or the UK that make these moulds anymore 😕 do you find they dirty easy. We have to use very clean gloves, as a grubby hand can mark them. Is this the same for you.
@@aoifemccullough3800 All the mould makers that I new about seem to have closed down now. Did you get your moulds from JS mouldings (Jed Stone) ? I don't have a problem with the moulds getting dirty, I clean and oil them after use. I have enough moulds to do what I need to do, I bought a lot of moulds when I started in 2004.
@@Welleydog yes thays exactly where we got them. We do have alot of moulds etc. But I seen some of yours and was thinking to get new ones. Do you find the ornaments themselves get dirty easy not the actual mould. 🤔😁
@@aoifemccullough3800 No, all of my products are indoors, they stay like new. I have sometimes bought second hand moulds. I have had people from all over the world wanting to buy my moulds, or people think that I can make moulds for them. Having a mould does not mean most people could make dry-cast anyway, I have made hundreds of tons of stuff over the years, so I have got used to making dry-cast stone.
We also have a balustrade of this kind. Unfortunately, it starts to crack and we open it because the iron is rusting. I put the iron in the primer as much as possible and then seal cement with sand. What do you advise?
I don't put iron bars in my balusters. My balusters are hand made dry-cast stone, if they are well made they do not need bars, my balusters never break. If you put bars in them, you need to use stainless steel, so they don't rust but, stainless steel cost too much. I have not had a baluster break for years. Are your balusters concrete or dry-cast stone ? Balusters will nearly always split and crack if they have iron bars in them.
@@Welleydog I don't know. I am not happy with it. I open it now where needed en put primer on the iron.
@@ingridmeijer7203 Its not good. I get lots of phone calls and emails from people where their balustrade is cracking because of iron bars inside the balusters.

@@ingridmeijer7203 The only thing you can do is change the balusters for balusters that don't have iron bars in then,.With bars in them they will just keep rusting and cracking.
How can i have some moulds?
You need to search for a mould maker, all of the mould makers that I used seem to have closed down now, my moulds are all dry-cast moulds, I only make dry-cast stone.
