There is a mistake about the year. This is the Paris Roubaix of 1976. Kuiper is amongst the four ahead. He is wearing the World championship shirt. He became world champion in1975. Moreover, Merckx is still in the Molteni team. In 1977 he was in the Fiat team. Besides this, it is great to publish this video.
Hi! Quick question: Were they using 32 or 36h wheels? No doubt they were using sew-ups but I've ALWAYS wondered about the 32 vs. 36 spoke count on wheels of the past (late 1970s-1980s.) Straight guage or Double-butted? 2x or 3x lacing? Anyways, thanks!
@@ralphc1405 would have varied depending on choice of rider. Some might have 36 in rear and 32 in front. Heavier riders may have used 36 in both. In the 50s standard spoking was 40 in rear and 32 front.
This is the way to broadcast a bike race. Good editing, good commentary. Its amazing how dangerous... still chaotic today, but it seems more so then with the motos and cars.
Love the old diets.. Rare steak.. actually my fav. These racers of old were truly tough people. It was much more dangerous than todays, as all the accidents and situations have shaped how safety has been considered in modern races.
Looking at their faces and thinking that the riders were young men in their 20s, strikes me the fact that they looked much older, especially if compared with the nowadays riders. That was a real cycling: no radios, no plans, no technology...
I think Martens rode great yet had crap luck, he got cought in a crash, chased back then looks good despite the brutal chase and the crashes hard later on after the big split from the big guys like Merckx and MOser attacking the race
Last 25 years I just rise the hems of my cycling shorts "Sean Yates" style. At 49 I still hang on with guys 1/2 my age on the flat and fast club rides on my 1980s steel Colnago Master. No way I'm riding with mid-lenth socks. Today's tan lines are ugly af.
gertkath indeed i remember. i was 8. demeyer would die in the 80s of a possibly doping linked heart insufficiency in his sleep. I've seen all the Paris Roubaix races since then.
Gianni cielo si, con tutto il respetto ma gli anglosassoni non hanno ancora la memoria del ciclismo come noi, Belghi e voi, Italiani che qui saluto! Spero che gli Italiani ritornino rapidamente al primo piano di questo bello sport.
What a bunch of has beens. They were doing it all wrong! Today's in-the-know hipster cyclists on their Made in China plastic fantastic "bikes" know that the riders position was WAY too back, the cleats WAY too forward, these hacks were making no power, they were not spinning. You gotta spin. Spin, spin, spin....
i'll watch this again and again

1976 is the correct year.

Looks like the Paris-Roubaix movie made by danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth,....... A springday in hell..........
that change tire of 9 seconds
is faster than the most in tdf 2022
You just cut to the action. Well done! But the intro with the bike wash & music, bellissimo! 🧑🍳 🙏
yeah but the intro gives away the BEST lesson on how to really clean your drivetrain and chain--PETROL and a brush!!!
Thanks for sharing this. It is an excerpt from Jørgen Leth's 1977 documentary En forårsdag i
Helvede (A Sunday in Hell).
No, it is the 1976 documentary of A Sunday in Hell
In that film, released in 1976, Marc De Meyer is the winner of the race. The year after, the winner was Roger De Vlaeminck. No mistake possible ☺️
This is the 1976 Paris Roubaix, also published as "A Sunday in hell" but a shorter version.
Moser's style reminds me a bit of Remco's. Although Moser is much bigger, his style is pure poetry.

This is 1976 ...77 i was at the Velodrome

I really liked my toe clips there was a level of commitment you just don't have with clipless.
Two straps on each clip.
It is not an independent video, just a reduced version of the movie "A Sunday in Hell" from 1976
The year is 1976 and not 1977 ! Kuiper is wearing the WorldChampion shirt that he won in 1975 !
No, it is the 1976 documentary of A Sunday in Hell
Grande ROGER IL "PAVÉ" IL SUO PARADISO👏👏👏
merci 👍👍👍
1976!
Occured to me with the brutal pace, did they have 12t cogs on their 6 speed freewheels this year? Otherwise they had to hammer the 52 or 53-13
12t cogs were out but most used 13 I think. I may be wrong

Sicuro sprint 72
Rule #24 Speeds and distances shall be referred to and measured in kilometers, Paris Roubaix is not 166miles long ;) cheers
Excellent sprinting, for first and the 2nd group.
I think Martens rode great yet had crap luck, he got cought in a crash, chased back then looks good despite the brutal chase and the crashes hard later on after the big split from the big guys like Merckx and MOser attacking the race
no helmets
1976 ;) (Merckx team Molteni / 77 Team Fiat)
Everytime I watch 70s bike racing in France they are on strike or protesting .
French are always complaining about something
Don't they make men's shorts like that anymore? I actually prefer those shorter ones because I wouldn't feel impeded like the current ones.
Last 25 years I just rise the hems of my cycling shorts "Sean Yates" style. At 49 I still hang on with guys 1/2 my age on the flat and fast club rides on my 1980s steel Colnago Master.

The shorts they are wearing are 100% wool, not lycra. You might not like so much.
This is not the 1977 edition !!!! 1976 instead !!!

This is Paris Roubaix 1976 not 1977
gertkath Yes, Demeyer won in 1976 and De Vlaeminck in 72, 74, 75 and 77.

Great Haircuts
Fred Taylor we organize a bad hair day on the day of this race
This was such a fast Roubaix avge speed was 26.5 mph? How many years went by to match or exceed that speed?
1964 FASTEST ever. 22 pound steel rig, 5 cog rear, 36x4X, friction shifters, cages pedals Any questions........?

22:00 De Vlaemink gets the answer: "Maertens e Pollentier ... quaranta secondi!"
Thought I had heard a worse movie score than this a few weeks ago.
No, it was not worse than this.
1976. Maertens has not raimbow Jersey..
1976, not 77. A Sunday in Hell.
Moser en una Benotto!!!!!!!!!
No vale la pena suscribirse a un canal como este
who needs gravel when you have pave/

This is Paris Roubaix 1976 not 1977
Yes, I think you're right. From "Sunday in hell" by Jørgen Leth.
Absolutely right.
In 1977 Eddy Merckx was in the french team FIAT.
