Hey I just wanted to thank you for posting this. My 11 year old son has apraxia of speech and it MADE HIS DAY to watch this video. I can’t believe it never occurred to me before to look for videos like this. But it meant the world to him to have an idea of how amazingly good it can get and what there is to look forward to. It really is so kind of you to take the time to share your experience. It requires bravery as well as kindness toward others and I just really appreciate that. My son, like you, exudes a sort of sweetness. And I think that it must be the case that, at least for a certain personality type, having a limit on your ability to express yourself verbally naturally leads to you discovering other ways to connect with others. So for some, and this definitely includes my son and seems to include you, there is just this blossoming of kindness and warmth that is really wonderful to encounter. It makes me really excited for my son’s future to think of what a uniquely emotionally gifted person he is going to be when he is able to put together that tremendous warmth with the capacity to express himself verbally as fluidly as you do. So thanks once again. Hope you have a great day :)

I'm in my 20s and I have what is most likely verbal apraxia as a symptom of autism, and this is the most I've ever felt seen. I can't thank you enough.

I’m 17 & been told I have this. I can write & text perfectly but can’t talk for the life of me. It sucks because people think I’m dumb (though I can’t blame them) so I just stop speaking.

I’m 43 and have it. I owe everything to my mum as she constantly worked with me to help me improve my speech. I’m a kindergarten teacher now but I feel like I’ve had to work harder and been discriminated against all my life, especially as an adult. I feel like guys don’t like me because of my speech. I am over people thinking I’m dumb because of how I speak and it really does destroy my self esteem.

I have twin boys 21, both with apraxia. Apraxia of speech is a bitch, you explain it well and I understood every word you said. Your willingness to talk about it, pun intended, is a testament to your strength and courage. Keep talking, I’m listening.

Hi, Jordan. Thank you so much for this video. It put me in tears to know how much hope there is for my 5 year old son Nolan. It's sad, when I play a video of him talking he always wants me to turn it off because he already dislikes his own voice and he asked me why has God made him not talk normal. I don't know if it's apraxia that he has but it sounds very similar to difficulties associated with apraxia. He does not ever without prompting want to finish the second half of a word or final sound of a word. So "word" becomes "wor" for him. "Big" is just "bi" I was so impressed with your speaking. I can see purposeful clear and deliberate pronunciations when you speak and I showed him. When you talked about the brain not wanting to send the signals correctly he started knocking on his own head like he was mad at his brain. Nolan does have an IEP and has been in speech therapy for 2 or 3 years already. He is going into kindergarten this year. He does have a twin brother with no speech problems.

My daughter is 3 and she hasn’t been diagnosed but her speech therapist thinks she has apraxia. We’ve been doing lots of things to determine if it’s what she has. I’ve always been able to tell she couldn’t talk right. As an infant learning to talk she never repeated words back or seemed to want to. With my second baby it’s so different. She talks so much and mimics us. I’m so beyond grateful you made this video and gave an insight to what you go through and I hope others that see it become more understanding. You’re so strong. So brave. And so appreciated for making this video. I’m forever thankful to you for giving me a different perspective and showing me what it’s like down the road with apraxia. I’m so proud and thankful for you

Jordan, thank you. As a mother of a child with apraxia, we wonder all the time whether we'll be able to have a more robust relationship with our son through verbal communication. Our 5 year old son can say many words imperfectly with difficulty, but we understand him. He's shy and quiet, and avoid speaking unless we force him to do so. Our son has spent 20 hours a week with a CDA (Communications Disorder Assistant), with SLP supervision, for over a year now. He's made great progress. When he was 4, he could barely say one word. But how do we know what his prognosis will be as he matures? No one can tell us. If my son could communicate like you, I would have so much hope for his future. Thank you for sharing your story.

I had Apraxia when I was younger. Nobody could understand me besides my close friend and sister. I pointed at what I wanted and even at 7 the words were not coming out correctly. I went to a special school from preschool and kindergarten. When I was in first grade until 5th grade. I struggled because nobody could understand what I was saying. I wanted to say the word but it wasn’t coming out. I was told even today that I sound like I am from another country. You can’t tell today I have it but it still happens that the word is not coming out what I want. Now I can never stop talking. When I was younger in speech I had a speech teacher that was extremely mean and would scream at me. She would of been fired if I would of told anyone but if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t of gotten to the point where I talk that you can’t tell I had apraxia or a speech problem.

Then we have a good laugh. I would like to hear you share about how you dealt with academics at school and the academic language that is involved with school. I know it must be extremely hard and lonely for you right now, but you have to love yourself. There are other people out there who will love you for your personality and spirit, which is all that truly matters. It doesn't feel this way forever. Keep going, you can do it. I wish you the best. :)

Thank you for the informative video! I didn't know this was even a thing until a few days ago, and now learning about it more and more. God bless your heart.
Out of curiousity, what's the main difference between Verbal Aporaxia and Aphasia? Sorry if it comes out stupid, I'm litterally trying to learn more about these conditions. Take care!

Jordan, my toddler granddaughter is newly diagnosed. You give us so much hope! She is now starting her speech therapy with an experienced SLP who treats CAS. She loves music and loves to sing. Do you sing?

I have Childhood Apraxia of Speech. When I was younger. My parents tried to teach me how to sing but I didn't get it so they didn't continue it. At that point, I was starting to talk. So it really didn't matter that I could not sign.

I’m trying to watch a couple of your videos so if I ask questions that you already answered please forgive me. How did your parents got you of your “easy answers” such as when I want to ask my son what you want to eat he usually say chicken or spaghetti cause that’s what’s easy for him to say ... even when it’s breakfast

Hi, thanks for this i have a 4 year old that has difficulty pronouncing his sounds, he has not been diagnosed medically and is not on any therapy yet. He has challenges with oicing out consonant sounds. From your video, your sounds seems kind of clear, is it due to therapy over the years or is it just due to the fact that things will get better as you age. Were you missing out on consonant sounds. Thank you

One of my characters in my story had suffered brain damage from a traumatic injury (bullet to the brain will kinda do that), so he ended up developing verbal apraxia. Am here to educate myself more on the topic.
I'm just curious if physical trauma will always cause more than just verbal apraxia cuz dang, I already wrote him a certain way! :(

I think if a random person spoke to you for a long time they would think you're sometimes thinking in another language and translating in your head. like sometimes when I think about an idiom that doesn't exist in the other language or if it's a language I don't know as well and I'm not thinking in the same language I'm speaking in it can sound like you sometimes sound

Hey Jordan, thank you for making these videos! From K-6, how many times per week did you attend therapy? Also, did you work on it by practicing exercises at home? If so, how long per day? Thanks again! Our son has been working very hard and we're so proud of the progress he's made. We also don't want to regress if we cut back on his therapy. He has two sessions per week and is in the 1st grade.

Patrick Dowd hi hi hi! I received speech therapy 5x a week, every week, 45 minutes a session. We did practice a little bit at home. My mom really had to push hard against the school board for this amount of services.

@@jordanchristian9099 wow that is a lot of work! We are getting a lot of resistance for even 2 times per week. Was this therapy at school or somewhere else? The school said he doesn't qualify for speech therapy at school, which is as hilarious as it is sad.
