It's how we call things that sound so alien and, forgive my harsh critique, sounds so far removed from what the lyrics are supposed to express (thus my joke calling it a war song, bcoz it really DOES sound like one). In all my years (I'm 63 now) listening and collecting classical music of any variety, I have found that the architecturally "unpretentious" and very simple ones to be most appealing. I recommend Karl Jenkins' Benedictus. (I love the version with the cellist Hauser as the featured instrumentalist, it's on TH-cam). If it doesn't wet your eyes I don't know what will. Elitism is not a criteria for judging a choir in choral competitions. The fact that you brought such a useless fact up in a venue for music appreciation tells a lot about your character.
