Congratulations. Such a relief that "moving on" did NOT mean everything's imploded and you were gtving up on books and switching to something dire like sourcing used parts for vehicles.
The easiest way to fix the flickering problem is set camera to 25 or 50 frames per second. As the lights are running at 50 hz. Biggest mistake for many people in uk, who hear specs from our American cousins (who run at 60hz) then wonder why they have the flicker issue 😆 always stay at 50 or 25 frames per second or PAL standard. America can use 30 or 60 frame per second or NTSC standard. Hope that makes sense. Congratulations 🥳
Also Tom, fluorescent lights are not so good for health reasons, let alone filming purposes, etc. May I respectfully recommend that they be replaced with LED lighting (which may also reduce the power bill)?
+1 from an American cousin. What the OP wrote you should indeed sort your photography issues out. As a second generation, second-rate student of photography i can confirm, lol. If my mother were still living, she would give me better advice to give you. Then again, as a book lover herself, she would as likely have already put her 2 cents in the jar.
Laughing and CLAPPING (!) for your new digs and home for great books!!! I love the rain (I grew up in Seattle!), and also your beautifully sunlit garden views. Here in San Francisco my studio is comfortably dark, floor to ceiling barrister case-appointed with mainly British historical books about tea, spanning 500+ years, helpful to my research and writing. Wishing you continued success!
When this video started, I was getting worried. Your tone was so serious. A few minutes in, and I’m feeling so excited for your great news. I absolutely think this is the right move for you, with such a lovely office space, and I hope his allows you to keep a healthy work life balance. I’m picturing your family enjoying that beautiful garden.
I’ve been watching your videos for months now and have made a purchase from you also. I would like to tell you how thrilled I am for you to have your new office. I’m looking forward to seeing all put together and ready for business. I wish you every success in this business. Books are some of my most favorite things in the world 📚🧚
Wonderful! Congratulations on getting your business so established you've been able to move to your own store!❤👍 We all look forward to see where you go from here, and what other lovely books come across your desks and through your hands to show us.😊 Thank you for sharing with us.♥️
Omgsh congrats!!!!! This is so exciting! Im from the states and there is a rare books shop in town. I never paid much attention to it since it opened a few years ago. I didn’t think rare books was a viable business. But ever since I found your channel I’ve been appreciating the shop’s existence and the important of rare books and how awesome they are! Every time I walk by it to work, I think of you and your channel! If I’m ever out there in UK one day, I’ll definitely come visit your office! 😊
It's wonderful. Huzzah! In researching Douglas Cockerell, inspired by you and his artistry, I now know Harvard has some of his books and I'm digging through my House Museum's collection database to learn what I can. You've really inspired me. I wish you success and joy in your new space!
Great to see Tom. Ive been collecting and occasionally selling to dealers since mid 90s. You are an actual inspiration, and your videos are required viewing! Best Wishes for your continued success.
So many congratulations to you. I think you made absolutely the right decision in your choice of premises. A shop is an expensive operation and you will not need me to say that you have to do a lot of business just to cover the costs. It is better as you observe to let the business grow step by step. I am not a Tolkien follower (my loss!) but find your content really valuable. I went with my late father too many years ago to Maggs Brothers on Berkshire Square (now sadly gone) and was hooked! Every success.
So glad that you’re able to do this! At first I was afraid that the business wasn’t doing well 😅 It’s a good compromise to have a good work-life balance, it’s very nice that you also have your family in mind and tried to find the best solution for everyone :) Also, if you ever need people to work in a bookstore I’m willing to move there xD I’d love to work in a bookstore but here no one is hiring for that 🥲 Wishing you and your family the best, I’m sure this will work out as you intended :) ❤❤❤
Congratulations with the move. Your new office is lovely & I love your bookcases ❤ they are beautiful ❤ I have a couple of globe-wernike bookcases that my grandfather gave me which house my most precious books. I've Always loved them and believed that they are a good way to keep precious books. They also house some of my most precious bears. My most precious books are nearly all on ceramics history, although there is a voltage I found at a book fair& a couple of tatty books I was given in hay on wye. (They were too tatty to sell & are by someone love).
I wish to extend massive congratulations from me and my family to you and yours. I've only recently found your channel, and I've devoured your posts. Again, congratulations, and we'll wait until the next content upload!
i have loved The Secret Garden since i was a little girl, oh so many decades ago. I just picked up an older copy a few months ago and now it will be time to save up for the earlier editions. Thank you so much for showing the first edition, it is a goal to aspire for. Pacific Northwest, US.
Suggest a couple of cabinets with large drawers and a table surface. Tailors have made some really brilliant ones using IKEA type cabinets. Then everything can be hidden away when clients are visiting. Good luck and what a great next step!
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest, U S A. Congratulations on your new shop and further adventures. Thank you for including us in your journey. Lots of good wishes.
Congratulations! My sister and I are hoping to get to England, Wales, and Scotland next year and hopefully we can add a visit to the new place to our itinerary.
Thanks again Tom for sharing your precious time with us. I likely speak for many in acknowledging how exciting it feels to share this life-affirming journey with you. "The road goes ever on & on..." I'm super-chuffed to see your new workplace. May it be a blessed space for you 🙏 IF you're considering bestowing a place-name, may I courteously suggest something apt in Quenya? *Marparmandil* (Home of the Bibliophile) / *Parmandilimar* (Bibliophiles-Home) OR *Parmacaromar* (BookTrader-Home)
It’s so heartwarming to see young people who are working hard and making a success of themselves. I wish you all the very best for the future. I have absolutely loved books all my life and your channel is excellent. Hopefully I’ll get to visit your new premises one day.😁👍🇬🇧
I love your new office, it’s really spacious and gets great light. I’m sure you’ll shoot amazing videos there. I’ll definitely visit when I come to the UK. By the way, don’t forget my HoMe books :)
A herculean task indeed Tom, many congratulations on scaling up the business, I hope you find a staff that are as passionate about rare books as you are, looking forward to seeing the progress made next week.
Love this channel! Really appreciate it man. The knowledge and peacefulness is so relaxing and refreshing. And I can’t help becoming more and more addicted to books as I watch!🙏🏼
My goodness , that sure is a beautiful office. So much character and soul. A lot of the offices here in the US are *very* bland by comparison. And then that view! It’s like that whole room and view was made for the purpose of your bookshop! I think the office idea is brilliant as opposed to a shop. I would’ve thought a shop would be the next logical step, but you perfectly laid out the reasons why an office is a better fit for your business, especially giving you the flexibility to maintain a healthy work/life balance. But I think even an office this way is more exclusive, allowing for a more quiet and private opportunity to shop or sell one’s book or collection. You’re the only book collector I’m sub’d to and while I’m not a collector of rare books or manuscripts myself, I find your channel and the content most fascinating, and I’ve learned a great deal. Your growth has been rapid! I had no idea you’ve built all of this, including this community, inside of 1 year. Imagine where you’ll be in the next 2 to 5! Very exciting and a huge congratulations to you and your family. Many thanks for taking us along for the ride!
I’m so happy and excited for you!! Also, I am honored that “we”, all your followers, get the opportunity to go through this journey with you 🎉 One day I will come to the UK and visit your space
Congrats! So excited for you, this seems like a balanced move forward and I’m sure you’ll be moving and keeping some extraordinary books through there!
I'm so excited for you! I work in a used bookstore myself so I understand how challenging it is to find an appropriate space for your bookselling business. I wish you continued success!
I'm so excited for you Tom. I've been following you for a while and love your passion for books. Wishing you continued success in this part of your business journey. Thank you for sharing it

Loving the journey, looking forward to next week 👍
Every journey begins with a single step. I'm happy to see you're step was in the right direction. Congratulations on your success thus far. I look forward to watching you grow in your journey.
I applaud your decision to move and grow your business in a way that allows you to spend time with your tiny daughter and family. I love your new space. It is full of light (even though you are not entirely happy with it yet) and promise, even on a rainy day.
Wishing you tons of success in your new office. You are a pleasure to watch. I live in Florida, USA. Thought you would like to know you are reaching people far away.
I’m new to your channel. I have loved books all of my life (i’m an old lady now) so your site is great for me. I’m not a collector, but my little study would say differently. I’m enjoying your channel very much. Thank you.
Congratulations. Love the new digs. I would swap the fluorescent lights with LED tubes that will fit the same housing. You have better choice in light tones and it will probably fix the phasing with the camera frame rate. I wish you all the very best on the growth of the business.
Congratulations, my friend! A Herculean task, but well worth the effort. A lovely 'room of one's own'.
Thank you Denver!
Good lord you scared the hell outta me! 😂 Congratulations on your new office and I'm so excited for you!
Congratulations. Such a relief that "moving on" did NOT mean everything's imploded and you were gtving up on books and switching to something dire like sourcing used parts for vehicles.
One always need more bookcases. It is well known that books multiply at night to fill out all the availabe space.

@@ThatLeighBrown thanks so much! Will try this out tomorrow and hopefully it’ll work!

Can also stick to 30fps and set shutter speed/shutter angle to match 50hz
@@CheeseWyrm And fluorescent lights tend to distort colours.

*Onward and Upward! (Nothing more fulfilling as a customer than seeing a good business and great proprietor thrive.)*
Thanks so much!
So agree with you
I was truly worried when I read the title. I am so glad that moving on means moving on up.
Sadly, do not forget about security for your space and your books and yourself if people will be visiting and your address publicly known.
Congratulations! Beautiful building!
Thanks Cory - I’m really lucky to have this space!
Well done, Tom, on the new office. Seeing your business grow from strength to strength is a pleasure to watch.
By that title I thought you were quitting TH-cam. Glad to see you're leveling up your business.

The problem with self employment is that your boss is often a tyrant that won't listen to reason.
😂 funny and true 🙈
Congratulations! What a beautiful and fitting space for rare books to live.
What a wonderful office space and setting; all good thoughts for success and life balance!
That's wonderful that you are able to upscale! Congratulations! Here's to bigger and better things for you and your family. ☺

Good luck Tom. I’ve enjoyed the journey so far.
I could never be a book seller as I wouldn’t want to sell anything I bought!
Good that the business is growing, doing what you love is important.

Congrats! So excited for you, this seems like a balanced move forward and I’m sure you’ll be moving and keeping some extraordinary books through there!
I knew it was going to be good news! Congratulations! I love what you do and wish you well.
The new office looks great!
Try adjusting your shutter speed on your camera. The flicker rate of your lights is interfering with your shutter speed.
So glad you mentioned changing out the awful florescent lighting. Such a beautiful setting deserves quality beautiful light.
Your new office looks great! Blessings on your upgraded endeavor!

How exciting!!! Congratulations!!!!
That looks like the perfect place! Very intriguing.
So exciting! Onwards and upwards, I look forward to popping in 😃
And how hilarious that your vid was interrupted by an ad from... Z_ff_t 🤣
Just found your channel after seeing your post about the Medieval Books display at the Museum - Just love it! 💖
Congratulations. Love the new digs.
I would swap the fluorescent lights with LED tubes that will fit the same housing. You have better choice in light tones and it will probably fix the phasing with the camera frame rate.
I wish you all the very best on the growth of the business.
Massive congratulations on your new office!!! 🎉
Well done Tom, good luck with your new venture
Good luck in the new space, Tom! 😊
You deserve it! 🎉 keep up the good work!
