This is correct. The original story was a novel called ''The Brick Foxhole'' by future director Richard Brooks. When Brooks sold the story to RKO, the studio changed the victim from a gay person to a Jewish person because homosexuality could not be mentioned in Hollywood fbilms in 1947.
