    Excellent quote to conclude with:
    “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
    Add the quote “Fear is the mind killer.”
    Now, I ask those in denial of the greenhouse effect to manage their fear and be a part of the solution.

      @Kyle Erasmus You again? It's quite hilarious watching you do the reality denial bit, saying things that are so obviously untrue and accusing the people who actually care about the future of human civilization of being as stupidly ignorant as you so obviously are. Do you believe the earth is flat too?
      How much time do you spend on this? Are you getting paid to show up and say such nonsense? Or are you just so brainwashed by the conservative propaganda machine that you're willing to shill for them for free? Do you ever actually listen to the videos you're commenting on or are you too afraid you might learn something that might challenge your preconceived notions?

    Good video. We must tackle the root causes of environmental degradation, waste & pollution accumulation, resource depletion & greenhouse gas emissions. High on the list for individuals must be to stop feeding the "must have" (but don't really need) rampant consumerism, reduce food waste & responsibly reduce fossil fuel consumption/usage to the minimum realistically possible. Govts are irresponsibly slow to grasp the nettle so individuals have to kick start the process themselves & develop the good habits which may ensure our survival.

      I'd argue that we will NEVER get an adequate proportion of Earth's 8 billion people to voluntarily give up on consumption. The task before us requires solutions implemented on a massive scale, and that will require state action. The most useful role individuals can play is grassroots political activity, including spreading the word like this channel does. Given the nature of the crisis, civil disobedience is entirely appropriate, among many other modalities. Be as personally green as you want, but don't expect most people to change until incentives are changed.

    Well done, I can't believe allot of people are still denying there is a problem. I was a fishing guide in a remote area of Australia a few years back and the lodge catered for well to do people. This one set of guests were off the scale wealthy, and the grandfather (was the holder of this wealth) came on my boat one day and one of the questions he asked me was, " Do you think this climate change thing is real and if you do, what do you think the solution would be?"
    I told him that of course I thought it was real and that it is a global emergency and my solution would be to stop all economic activity and gather the greatest scientists and thinkers into a sort of Manhatten project to find solutions to the problems the earth now faces. Needless to say his body language and further conversations suggested to me that he thought I was a weirdo!

      Advanced Civilisation47- Really! A fishing guide & an expert in climate change? Of course your belief about climate change is only your opinion based on being brainwashed by other believers that have been brainwashed or are charlatans . You offer no scientific evidence that there is something wrong with earths climate & what harm is it causing. There are more humans on earth that have ever existed at one time & plant & animal life is thriving all over the planet. Fact is that climate change has always happened , is happening & will continue to happen as long as the earth exists . Several ices ages occurred in the past according to climate records & there have been several mini-ice periods in various locations on earth throughout earth's history. It is not a scientific fact when you ask people what they think about climate & the cause as their answer is only an opinion . There really is little scientific evidence & facts that climate change is bad & needs to be controlled & that man has been responsible for the changes.. There is little evidence that a warmer climate is harmful to the climate & more CO2 is harmful or is the main cause of the warming. There is more evidence that shows colder temperatures cause more deaths than warmer temperatures throughout all areas of the earth. Why don't you do some research & learn the science, physics & chemistry of earth's environments before you spew BS opinions .

      I think the idea of a completely new socio-economic paradigm is a complete anathema to those kinds of people. The wealthier you are, the more you have to lose, so I guess it makes sense that they don't want to hear the message. And of course we are all encouraged to join in with the status quo - you only have to take a quick scan down at the very well organised trolls and deniers who leave comments on this channel to see what lengths the fossil fuel and other establishment industries will go to to ensure that every single commentator on climate change is 'attacked'. I'm lucky that I've spent 30 years working in industries that are full of mindless people like this, so their comments are water off a duck's back for me, but I do feel bad for younger people who read and hear those sorts of comments and who feel confused by them. Ultimately, while these people spread their astonishing disinformation, our climate continues to change rapidly. Time and tide wait for no man and eventually the evidence will be at everyone's doorstep and we will all simply have to deal with the consequences.

    • @earldecker7760
      @earldecker7760 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just Have a Think- It is people like you that are brainwashing our grandchildren in schools across America & the world that humans are the cause of climate change & that we need to charged for causing it. You have no scientific proof that climate change is caused by mankind & is not natural. You are the ones spreading disinformation & lies & doing harm to the future of these children across the world. You spent 30 yrs. working in industries that are full of mindless people explains a lot of your ignoramus mentality. . The real science & evidence of climate change is already apparent & the false science as presented by the false scientists is exposed from the manipulation of real temperature data & numerous climate models that never are correct as well the past climate temperature charts have been constantly changed. The many animated videos of future climates as well as changes of the Greenland ice cap , polar Artic sea ice & Antarctica ice cap & sea ice are a real joke in realism. You want a real description of the future climate of the earth will be then read Gen. 8:22 & God will enlighten you. If you do not believe what God says then your a FOOL.I rest my case.

    Having worked in different countries around the world I can definitely say people either do not care, do not believe or can not afford to change. I think the days of people being uninformed are over. I really believe the only way that change is ever going to happen fast enough is when it is economically driven. Once it's cheaper for renewables and more environmentally friendly options actually save money THEN change will happen with the masses. Government could really help by taxing and subsidising to push this agenda but will not until the money talks.
    Great videos by the way. Loved the table. Give us more choices and less information. How do the good people of the world make the choices that will make a difference? Voting power? Buying power? Much stronger than marching down a street IMHO. Keep it up.

      HI Pedro. Very good feedback. Many thanks. I do genuinely believe we're extremely close to some 'public perception' tipping points that may just coincide with the economic tipping points that you mentioned. I agree with you about market forces and also about subsidies. I mentioned this in the DACCS video a couple of weeks back - we need both of these things to kick in if we're to succeed.

    • @grindupBaker
      @grindupBaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Once it's cheaper for renewables and more environmentally friendly options actually save money". Absolutely and that's why a key attack strategy of the fossil fuel industry (funded by) is to fight their competition by fair means or foul, just like Pepsi & Coke, Tide & Daz. That's why you'll find videos about air turbines massacring birds and brain damage caused by their "frequencies" and solar PV panels attracting lightning strikes, and investigations that unreliable wind & solar cannot replace U.S. coal because unreliable for national security, because they must do as much damage to the competition as possible, stop it being widespread and cheaper than their own product (due to economies of scale).

    • @Anon-xd3cf
      @Anon-xd3cf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Brightside I'm a wheelchair user stuck in a third floor flat. I work. I drag my ass down 3 flights of stairs every morning and and back up every evening.
      I don't eat much but I do require a fair amount of energy. If I grow my own vegetables I have the option of converting the bedroom into a hydroponics room...or trying to live off whatever I can grow in a window ledge box. I don't know what fanciful world you live in, but in the real world... It is simply not practical to *"grow your own fruit and veg"* ...nor is it practical, as an individual consumer, for me to only consume products with recyclable waste...unless you know of a company that produces medical grade products with recyclable packaging...
      It pisses me off how many things are needlessly packaged in materials which we as a country do not have the ability to recycle.
      Now, if I lived in the countryside...or even in the suburbs...or even had a shared garden area... I would be growing at least half of what I consume in a year.
      If the government funded things properly I wouldn't be stuck on the third floor without disabled access to my council flat!
      If the government funded things properly, the recycling facilities at the end of my street wouldn't be overflowing all the time...
      I'll bet you're a vegan with cotton clothes, woke AF, refuse to use clothes made in sweat shops by 7 fingered children...
      If I'm wrong... I am actually a bit sorry, I don't like to make such generalised judgements of people I've never met...
      But your reply suggests that you don't understand that you live quite a sheltered life.

I think permaculture permanent cover farming and phosphorous retention in wetlands can significantly improve our overall global health. Nitrogen from legume crops and other fixation processes can make a big difference in our fixed nitrogen needs, implementing changes in these areas are often huge social and political hurdles to overcome, but we must persevere. (this last winter was the third excellent rainy season to do just that, but I digress) But after the second Winter rainy season, when everyone was breathing a sigh of relief, Spring hit hard, hot and dry, and the fire season started early & went berzerk. Malibu and Thousand Oaks were almost wiped off the map, and the NorCal community of Paradise actually was. Basically, all that wonderful growth from the rains went up in flames and lots of CO2. I admit I'm in a bind about the whole thing. I would like to hear from you, a climatologist and a botanist or any other professional relevant scientist, on what our realistic expectations ought to be regarding ambitious geoengineering plans such as reverse desertification by planting trees in arid zones. It seems like wet winters alone aren't the panacea for SoCal that I had hoped them to be. So while I am very much for the tree-planting tactic, is it realistic to try it in arid, fire-prone areas, or is there a smarter way of doing it? Again, thank you for a wonderful program, and please keep up the excellent work. (too many commas, sorry.)

    For nigh on 10 years I’ve been printing and reading the climate reports from the various scientific and government bodies. I don’t much anymore as they all say the same thing, things are bad (understatement of the century) and there are rarely any solutions given, apart from what amounts to impossible solutions. I have noticed over the years at how the figures get worse, the situation gets worse, and it certainly (and this is a feeling and not empirical) is not a linear change. For example, the report you kindly presented has data far worse than the previous reports I read or saw recently. Normally I would question such a large increase in disaster, but not now. I think it is typically depressing that the reports make no suggestions on how to fix something, apart from “Stop doing the bad thing”. This got me to thinking about why politicians, generally speaking, do nothing. E.g. Republicans (who ridicule climate change) and the poor turnout at Caroline Lucas’ recent debate, two years since the UK parliament debated climate change no less. I’ve narrowed it down to the following: 1) Politicians live a life of lies and deceit. What politician hasn’t done a 180-degree U-turn on an issue to further their own cause? Thus, because they live in a world of lies, they have a hard time understanding hard truths or perhaps even believing or appreciating that they actually exist, since for them a truth today is nothing tomorrow. 2) Limited scientific education. Looking at the qualifications of UK politicians seems to indicate a propensity towards philosophy, politics and economics. I’ve not found hard data but I would suggest the percentage of scientists and engineers is going to be slim pickings (same for USA). Fundamentally they do not understand the science, do not trust the science and probably believe the science can be changed, just as quick as they change their policy ideology. 3) What’s in it for them? Nothing. Climate change used to be a long term issue (and thus of no meaningful importance), although perhaps, now time is so short, it’s turning in to a short term issue. However, the politician is not going to jeopardise their own position (gravy train) to support something that cannot be fixed and they see, if they see anything, that they have nothing to gain and plenty to lose by supporting or trying to fix an unfixable problem. Look at the collapse of past societies, where was the leadership and governance there? Any UK person who believes the government is going to help them in the worsening future is delusional or insane. Have you been following the latest comedy show? UK Brexit. Could they organisise a pi** up in a brewery, doubtful. And so, I fear, we must let the (domino) chips fall where they may and live and die with the consequences of our actions or lack of it.

    Great video again, I enjoy your reports and well reasoned views. For my tuppence worth on this one, I believe the human race is probably too vested in its various perspectives to solve this problem. As an example, the Green Party in my country has some excellent policy ideas in respect to wind / solar power and electric transport, yet is philosophically opposed to nuclear power. In Germany Mrs Merkel has invested heavily in Solar and Wind in order to close nuclear power plants. As a result Germany's CO2 emissions have increased for the last two years. It turns out you need to burn gas when the sun dont shine and the wind dont blow..... But climate change is only half the problem. The elephant in the room is human over-population. We can't solve the climate issue and loss of natural habitat on our planet without reducing the number of humans consuming its resources and using its land to spread ever further into our remaining wild spaces.
    To use an analogy .... the earth is like a car speeding towards a brick wall... Climate change controls the brakes and Human population controls the accelerator. You can't apply the brakes without first taking you foot off the gas. Nobody (except David Attenborough and Prince Phillip) is taking honestly about this..........

  • @pauljackson9519
    @pauljackson9519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 5:00, you quote the report arguing that the Holocene is characterised by the stability of key natural systems, which enabled the rise of modern human societies. What if the causation is reversed here? What if the agricultural revolution, beginning around 10 thousand years ago, stabilised key natural systems, thus allowing for the rise of modern human societies? That's the Ruddiman thesis. (We would otherwise be in the middle of an ice age right now.) I think it's convincing. Viewed through this lens, I stop looking for "sustainability" and, rather, focus on imagining human societies integrating themselves into local habitats that, inevitably, will change. In other words, stability doesn't exist. It's an illusion created by human civilization. The perspective is truly revolutionary and probably leads, in many ways, to responses similar to the report's recommendations.

You have really been brainwashed if you believe the BS presented in this video. It is scientific ignoramuses like you that believe the earth's climate needs to be changed when it is a fact the your brains need o be changed. .Earths climate always change according to the conditions imposed upon it. The seasons change throughout earth's yearly revolution around the sun . Weather is influenced by these seasonal changes as well. Long term climate change is caused by many natural variable factors & are cyclical within narrow parameters. The level of CO2 in the environment (Water, soil & atmosphere) has little to do with warming of the earth. Fact the warmer it is throughout the earth the more CO2 is released . The oceans cover over 70% of the earth & contribute the larger portion of CO2 in the atmosphere while plant life sucks a lot of the CO2 out of the atmosphere.. More CO2 makes for a greener earth & more abundant life for all on earth. Warmer climates & more CO2 equates to more luxurious larger plants=more food for all living carbon forms on earth. More warmth means more evaporation =more water for all life on earth. Warming is conducive for ALL life on earth whereas colder climes foster less life for ALL life on earth. Seems like you & ALL these fearmongers got your facts wrong. Better do more real scientific research & find out the real truth of climate change instead of the BS being spewed by so called pseudo-scientists & charlatans of the world.

    The summary of climate change is easy.
    It is the change of humidity in atmosphere, which produce between the (land)and the(seas & oceans) on the other hand...
    Occurring of rains, snow, storms, and floods at time and in unexpected places, confirm my theory(the change in the directions of winds)which must be balanced...
    How to reduce the heat of the earth and atmosphere?
    We must supply the earth with a natural cooling places...
    Results:
    ----------
    1- To balance the water vapor which produces between the( ground)and the(seas and oceans )...
    2- To balance the pressures of the air in the atmosphere...
    3- To balance the directions of winds which caused the climate change...
    4- To control upon the storms and harricans...
    5- To revive the the first theory of climate change (dynamic horizontal movement).
    6- To balance the percentage of gases forming the atmosphere.
    NOTE :The lack of water vapor is of land not of seas and oceans...

    Mishandling of land and water resources? Yes, absolutely, and occurring primarily in lesser developed countries. Is increasing CO2 a danger? No, it's actually a benefit to the biosphere. Doubling the CO2 in the atmosphere would go a long way toward reversing deforestation and improving the efficiency of photosynthesis. Ask any greenhouse owner what artificially increasing CO2 does for plant growth and hardiness. That's an experiment that's repeated thousand of times every year, and always with the same results: very substantial improvements in the quantity and quality of produce.

    The IPPR report frames climate change within a political ideology calling for social justice. This is not helpful as it will immediately alienate those who do not hold the same political views. Climate change should instead be framed as a non-political, all-encompassing problem for society to solve and we should be focused on practical, not ideological, solutions.
    There are several ways of viewing the responsibility for carbon emissions. There is a direct correlation between population growth and carbon emissions. Yes, historically the richest have emitted more but today in Africa there are 46 new coal power plants under construction, each with a lifespan of 40 years whereas in the EU CO2 emissions are decreasing. Where is the responsibility in the choices being made today that will affect the future? Is it morally correct that women in Niger or Burkina Faso have 7 children on average in a world that clearly cannot sustain such human population growth?
    It’s complex - as soon as we get into political or ideological discussions Climate Change is lost in the noise.
    You do a great job Dave, don’t get me wrong, but I think billionaires have as much an interest as us to live on a sustainable planet. There is no planet B.

    Global warming is bad enough but environmental degradation is far FAR worse. Water (or lack of it) is a serious problem. Technologies like wind and solar power sound great but they make terrible use of resources (20% used. 80% idle). and the roads cabling etc needed will damage previously virgin land.
    We need cheap, zero CO2, high temperature energy. And Fast.
    We actually have the technology in the form of molten salt nuclear reactors. The only snag is UK’s horrendously slow and restrictive regulatory system. Nobody wants unsafe nukes. But clogging it up with bureaucracy costs time we don’t have, wastes money and most importantly does not actually deliver better safety.
    Cheap nukes can undercut coal on costs. They can desalinate sea water, run high temperature industry eg ammonia or cement production, not to mention power generation.
    If all this looks like hokum - look at what Ian Scott of Moltex is doing. He will explain the issues far better than I can.

    I say buy an extra air conditioner if you think the weather is going to get hotter or at least buy A/C stock. The weather(short term climate) can be predicted 80% at 7 days but at 10 days 50%(coin flip) but 12 years?

      Predicting the climate is easier then predicting the weather

    I think people do care greatly. The thing is we are ruled by system's, laws, and greedy uber rich wealthy sick people. It seems that those who have and have had the privilege of a good education got get lost in ego, prestige, and greed. In the US all we have is paved streets with endless boring malls. You would think the highly educated would have addressed this along time ago. Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House Ronald Reagan took them off and here we are. You would think the highly educated could think about creating a more sustainable way of living, but no we have military, miles of mall's, corporate pollution, and they get away with everything without penalties. It leaves us all impotent. I guess we could protest or call our representatives. Education without wisdom has been disastrous

    All this without even a mention of the imminent demise of the Arctic and resulting impact on the permafrost and methane clathrates.

      They do actually go into that but it's not in the video. The video I suspect was intended as a short summary, intending that you lot go to read the report for yourselves, except unfortunately it's not actually included in the description. Here's where you can read the report, go nuts: www.ippr.org/research/publications/age-of-environmental-breakdown or www.ippr.org/files/2019-02/this-is-a-crisis-feb19.pdf
