Death Match: Israel’s Merkava Tank Vs. Americas’ M1 Abrams
The M1 Abrams was the best tank in the world for a long time - and its Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom combat record backed it up. But lately, Army officers are warning that other tanks are catching up, including Russia’s T-14 and T-90, the British Challenger 2, and the Israeli Merkava IV.
Yeah, the Israelis have designed their own tank. According to waronline.org, the Merkava came about after the Israelis were unable to buy the British Chieftain main battle tank due to concerns from diplomats. Lessons learned from the 1973 Yom Kippur War were also applied to the tank’s development. What emerged was something that protected its crew, had good firepower, and a lot of ammo storage. In fact, the crew protection aspect was heightened by a decision to put the engine at the front of the tank.
Today we’ll compare the Merkava to the Abrams in terms of the three vital qualities of a tank: firepower, mobility, and armor.

This article does not give the Merkava 4's main attribute nearly enough attention. That is, crew survivability! The Merkava crew can easily escape out the hatch in the rear if hit, while the engine in front means its almost impossible for a frontal hit to reach the crew compartment behind it! Also it is much easier to replenish main gun ammo under fire due to the rear hatch. The Merkava 4 can also serve as casualty evacuation under fire like no other tank anywhere. The Merkava's Trophy anti missile defence system is also the best in the world, and in addition, it can fire anti-tank missiles from it's main gun as well, something very few other tanks can do. For the conditions in the Middle East it is the best there is. The 60mm mortar (fired from inside the tank) is very effective against troops and ATM positions, another first for Merkava.

The Merkeva wins, hands down, in a defensive fight. It's a super-heavy tank that has 10 tons more armor and weapons than an Abrams, which it beats it in every metric but speed. That said, it's dramatically worse in offensive operations and in environments that it wasn't designed for (eg. it can't go over a lot of bridges due to the weight), as it's slow and burns a ton of energy.
Israel designed the Merkeva to be an absolute monster, that can hold the line against anything in its native environment; conversely, the US designed the Abrams to be much more balanced and capable of operating in both defense and offense, in a wide range of environments. Both are amazing tanks, but their design priorities are just in different areas. This creates a really bad matchup for the Abrams, as the only places that you are going to find Merkeva are places where it is near-perfectly adapted to, while the Abrams had to make compromises because the US operates in so many different environments.

A battle between these 2 tanks are very well balanced, with only slight differences, if they fight the winner will be the tank with a commander that can out guess the other commander in tactics

Hate to say it but the Merkava leap frogged the Abrams with its technology, for example trophy that the US army is equipping Abrams with. The new Merkava is like an F35 of tanks, hopefully Abrams x will come out soon enough.
