    Thanks to Operation Bullet Shot, I did a TDY at Andersen AFB Guam in the spring of 1973. What does that have to do with WWII? Two things. Just 15 months before I was there, the last holdout Japanese soldier from the battle of Guam 28 years earlier was found. www.guampedia.com/wwii-sgt-shoichi-yokoi-last-straggler-on-guam/ Also, just north of the AFB was one relic of the war. The airfield was on a plateau 500’ above the beach. The Japanese had dug a tunnel into the base of it along the beach where they unloaded supplies. They also dug a 500’ vertical shaft up to the plateau. This way they could quickly haul the supplies up to their airfield. That shaft with a protective grate over it, was still there.

      @Sanuk Jang Lery Nope. The wheels of the military beauracracy move slow. I was in the pipeline traveling west just as the Paris peace accords were going into effect and the bombing ceased in Vietnam. However, after a short lull, Cambodia bombing of Pol Pot restarted.

    If you have never been in a shooting war you can not fathom how difficult these invasions were. You are climbing over rubble caused by bombing or artillery fire that the enemy is hiding in. Your footing is difficult and you are vulnerable to enemy fire. These men were brave beyond the definition of the word. God Bless them. We should all remember them. Instead of the ridiculous "say their name" nonsense we have going on now we should all go to the nearest veteran cemetery and place a flag on their graves. These are the men that gave us what we enjoyed up until recently.

    Something you don't think about, after a bombardment the ground must be covered in sharp shards of shrapnel.

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mostly covered in big holes, probably full of water, and great piles of soft dirt kicked out of the holes, that are hard to climb across.

      Thank him for his sacrifice. That airfield was used in Vietnam and even recently when I was on NVB Guam, a plane ran out of fuel but made an emergency landing on that old strip that saves his life. That airfield was fought and died for but still Carrie’s on

    hey periscope you say we can license stock and hd / 4k footage, if that's the case then why do you release most of your content in 480p and lower?

    • @waswolltihr1526
      @waswolltihr1526 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because they make a living licensing / selling that stuff. So the things on TH-cam are more or less just advertising and if you need high quality footage you'll have to buy it from them.

      Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
      In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous TH-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.
      Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

      Film studios/archives do this to stop entities from using their licensed/copywritten footage without permission. I don't care for it either, but It better than a massive watermark in the middle of the screen.
