In this episode we are going over some of the common mistakes made in flux core welding overhead with gas. Many people don't believe this is a process that can be done, but let us assure you...It can be and is every day in structural welding.

I was taught 3/4" total stick out. If you can get 1/4" inside the nozzel then another 1/4" outside the nozzel and 1/4" spray you're usually wetting in pretty smooth.

I got another fluxcore request. Here in Southern California Lincoln NR232 0.072" is the standard for wire welding structural steel in the field. There isn't much on youtube for it, so it would be awesome if you made some videos on doing a 3G test coupon and some multipass fillets.

I would also be interested to see that, E71T-8 wires have a reputation as being more difficult to run, but being a self shielded flux core wire with ductility and CVN values equal to a 7018H4, it is a very attractive option especially in seismic areas.

Not sure why theres even videos on .045 dual shield flux core. I'm no weld professor although i feel as if its one of the easiest mig processes available. I've left the same comment/question you have here on many of the videos here. My current job requires 1/6" wire, not much of a difference than what youre running.

Great instruction Bob. I love Fluxcore. It is 65 % of my welding days mixed in with Aluminum MIG and Aluminum TIG and Stainless Fluxcore and Stainless TIG. It's funny though...I am right handed-but I DON'T weld from left to right. The guys at work laugh at me, can't figure it out how I weld backwards. And yes you have to drag Fluxcore. They blame it on me being a woman. Oh well. Please keep the videos coming!!!

Im the same, i push from right to left, only reason I push the .045 is that it provides more preheat, lights up the path im welding and offers more penetration than drag. Thats just me.

I used to weld overhead at 29v 350wire speed, used to think it was good, til I noticed my arms became super sore after continuously doing with it those perimeters. I weld at 32v and 400 wire speed now, im having my arms up for lesser time, and it’s way less strain on my arms.

It all depends on the type of Steel you're using and they never show a preheating process which is pretty much crucial any kind of oil paint or Mill scale can affect that type of results mild preheating eliminate a lot of that usually it's about 300 degrees you will see the steel sweating just an observation and an opinion

looks to me like... if he stood to the right, in front of the weld, his gun angle would improve. The way he is standing now, he has to reach to finish the weld. Reaching to finish a weld almost always changes the gun angle. But, even so, it turned out pretty good.

Use anything at all to find that comfort and do that 'Dry Run' to make sure that comfort is there from start to finish. And as well, exactly what was said here about keeping those angles consistent. Great videos. I'm really into them and even had a dream last night on welding a manhole on a big leach tank on a gold mine. What a sad narrow life I live eh? :)

Ok, there are many types of gas shielded flux core electrodes, but presumably you are talking about E71T-1, which is the most common and I believe what is being used in this video (Select Arc 720?). You can buy E71T-1 that is designed to run on mixed gas, CO2, or both. Most E71T-1 wires are designated as being acceptable to run on both, and this designated as E71T-1C/M C=100% CO2 & M= mixed gas specified by the manufacturer, usually C25. The as welded material properties of the electrode will be listed for both 100% CO2 and mix 75-25. Any mix between C25 and 100% CO2is acceptable.

    Flux core runs nice
I work at a quarry so some of the seam repairs on buckets and beds have dirt built up behind the seam which makes it tricky to weld.
Things are going smooth until a dirt pocket deep in the seam blows the weld out.
I do repairs on cracked weld seams and worn down seams.
Big buckets like 10-12 ft wide and 6-7 ft tall or so

  • @jakeb6909
    @jakeb6909 3 ปีที่แล้ว

One of these welding channels needs to be the first to do a 1in 4G/4F plate lol why are you all scared of the 1 inch? lol In the real world with structural dual shield welding it's not going to be on thinner gauge material. Every situation ive been in that required dual shield was for a minimum of 1/2" and if we did say stuff that was 3/8" or so we'd use smaller diameter wire but you should be the first to weld up a 1 inch since you need higher settings for thicker material.

Just wanted to throw this in there about the "piping porosity". Piping porosity as defined by D1.1, for example, is a pore that extends down into the weld metal for a distance greater than the diameter. You will sometimes find this type of porosity at the end of the "worm tracks" but the "tracks" by themselves are not addressed by D1.1. A great video.

Wow did you say 26.4 volts with 450 wire speed? What is there WPS settings for this? We have been running ours at 24v and around 350 wire speed I'm cutting about to do my AWS 1" Grove with having 1/4 Gap 35 degree bevel... Struggling ☹️ I'm older so eyesight is an issue in working on. I kept blowing through the backing plate as I changed angle half way through and went slower. Recently was shown how to hold whip upside down which greatly helped. I'm curious to try your settings and see if that helps. I try not to change wire speed from various positions as you can changed it basically by house closed or short your wire is ... Closer should mean faster contact.... Great video.... I'll be watching more.

What are the POWER requirements for running Dual Shield Flux Core wires? I have an Everlast i230 PowerMig and it may not have the oompf needed to run Dual Shield... is this really an issue or do I need to get a higher powered machine? This would be a good subject to cover sometime.

man I should show you some of the stuff I do at work.. 3/4 fillet bead (12 passes) in flat position, and 1/2 fillet bead (6 passes) in ALL positions.. 71-xm .052 wire from esab. actually works out well, just doesn't look like it til you complete that last pass!

There are several you can buy or you can fabricate one to your liking.

I spent a moon or two running .045 flux core overhead on structural, but I think it was straight CO2. Bossman wanted us to weld over 1/8" + thick paint. While he was grinding, chipping, and re-welding - we were moving on to the next piece because we used wire wheels. But of course that was just a "waste of time" and "making a mess" :D

How can he see where he is going welding that way

Interesting, I don't know anyone that changing setting for overhead. I've always just welded all positions the same. The setting only change according to weld size and metal thickness.

I'd like to see how you'd mig weld 1" thick A514 (beveled or fillet) in flat or horizontal with 90/10 gas and .045 Hobart Fabcore 1100 wire and/or .045 Hobart Fabcore Edge D2. I weld it a lot at work sometimes run into issues.
