Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I live in a small community/subdivision. For the first time in a long time, I’m starting to grow some of my own food. It feels good to do that.
Gardening is Life giving, supports good health and is good for your mental health and Peace OF Mind. Oh yes, fishing is something a lot of us look forward to. Take care.
Here's the deal Shawn. 2M of us cant be all wrong. Many of us have watched every video you have produced. You create whatever you think tells your story. Some we like better than others but collectively you have told a world class story and we love it. You are an all star and we are better off for it.
Love the gardening personally. The younger kids should realize, if they want to be self sufficient, learning to garden and manage the landscape around you is essential. Plus it's relaxing, I love going out to my garden and managing it.
Thanks for the videos Shawn!
Younger guy here. Gardening videos are some of my favorites of yours. Makes me dream about putting down roots and nurturing something to leave for my kids and grandkids. I loved the hugelkultur you built in some of your original food forest videos. Also your moose fence in the meadow by the new cabin.
Really enjoy your segments keep up the good work thanks for sharing
Absolutely awesome Eco- System you've created! I love it. It's absolutely serene and beautiful. ❤
I too am a self taught organic gardener. enjoying the garden themes.
I think you did an amazing job on your homestead from a cluttered forest to a thriving garden and a cabin. 👍🏼
In my part of 🏴 Scotland it starts brightening up at 3 am and doesn't get dark till 11 pm. 😎 👍
Love the variety of plant life you've grown. Extremely productive not only you and the family but for the wildlife. Such an inspiration to landed individuals I must say. Keep up the good work, stay safe, atrong and God bless.👏👍💪🙏
Получаю кучу эмоций, огромное спасибо вам!.
Even though I don't understand what is being said (Because my English is not good) I really appreciate the good work you do and congradulate you. A good survivor and you are a good plant breeder. I wish you healthy and beautiful days..🌲🌱🪴🌿🌾🍀
Keep watching and listening. It will help improve your understanding!
Cold air sinks, so am glad your home, gardens, and orchard are on a hill. It makes all the difference. We live at 1,500 ft elevation. The frost stays at the bottom, at 1,000 ft elevation. So up here we have a banana-belt for growing. Shawn, I sure appreciate all your videos; every single one, and the experience and knowledge you teach. Regards from far north California
Thank you, food plot looks great. Opossums got all of our plumbs and peaches last night
The garden is where I express my creativity and appreciation to the land that sustains us. It's where I found solace and science as a child. The woods as well. Without them I could not have survived long enough to raise a happy small family that brings abundant joy and all the love I'll ever need. Your home and gardens are a testament to your hard work and determination to provide for yourself and your family! Absolutely doable if one is willing put in the time, stay on task, and be grateful for all the things that give meaning to life. Your skill recording all your efforts is a gift to all watching. Thank-you for sharing the inspired content it provides❤.
Your garden 🪴 is beautiful 😍 😊you and Cali work so hard ❤
I really like all of your videos, whatever the subject.
Shawn that is right your corn is knee high before 4th of July !!! That is what we always say down here in the northern parts of Wisconsin & Illinois !!! Got to have the corn up to your Knees by 4th of July or no corn for you then !!! Grew up with this saying for over 70 years now !!!
This is what "homesteading" is about, it's NOT a dear camp or weekend retreat. There is always lots of diverse work. Construction is just a small part.
Shawn I've watched this channel almost from the beginning. I've learned many things that I never even thought about. Great job, thanks.
Questions, can the chickens eat the lupin seeds? How are the owls doing? Have they fledged yet? ;-
Thanks. The owls have fledged and we only hear them calling from back further in the woods every few days now. I don’t know about the lupine seeds so I didn’t give them to the chickens, I’m burning them in the charcoal kiln so they don’t germinate.
Je suis émerveillée par tant de beauté, votre jardin Éden est superbe, vous avez effectué un travail énorme. .Félicitations. .merci de nous montrer
Like seeing the pretty flowers.🌸🌺
love your garden great video
I'm one of those men who love gardening. My professional job was asphalt paving highways. I'm also self taught carpenter, electrician, plumber, roofer and so on. I love deer, turkey, rabbit, grouse and squirrel hunting, I also trout fish. I love sports. I love big families and my wife of 43 years have raised 4 kids. At 67 years old now I get the most enjoyment out of my garden and canning. Shawn you have a beautiful homestead and a lovely garden. Thank you for putting out these extroidinary videos. They are a pleasure to watch and your videography is amazing. Have a great day, Dave from West Virginia.
Waayahee,maxaad kaloo jeceshahay!!
Sounds wonderful to me!
Cali you are a awesome gardener 😊
Your flowers are amazing. Flowers add so much color to the all green veggie garden.
young(ish) guy here and i absolutely love the gardening videos. In my opinion it is the most important part of self reliance!!
Thanks for showing us your progressing forest. It looks so good. It’s producing so well with your management. Looking forward to seeing the finished chicken coop. Stay safe, healthy, happy, productive,& blessed.💯👍🏾😀💜✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
Love the gardening videos. I can’t watch you hunting but the garden is a biggie for me.
You are creating a beautiful environment with all the fruit trees and berry bushes and flowers. Garden is amazing
I want more gardening. Learn learn I wanna watch and learn.
It is obvious that you have done your homework on gardening. I love what you do. People that don't appriciate your gardening will some day wish they had paid attention. You will never have to worry about what you eat or even if you have any food. I saw your Thanksgiving dinner running around. 🦃😂😂😂
You are so inspiring thank you for sharing your knowledge
My wife's parents had a cabin on a lake, the property had fiddle heads, mushrooms and, best of all, wild strawberrys covering the slope behind the house. I dug up a dozen or so berry plants and planted them in my raised bed garden at home. Tiny fruit, but there was more flavor in a handful than in a quart container of those huge 'Franken-berries' sold in stores...😛😜🤪
I like your gardening videos and advice.
Great info.❤
Gardening is not my favorite, but we have a garden, and it has gotten bigger every year. Our daughter has one at her house and the same with her each year it gets bigger and we are always giving each other new ideas and learning.
And most important we all love to eat, and you can't beat a fresh sliced tomato for your BLT.
the garden is great
Just amazing what 1 man can do ! I watched you clear this land. It’s crazy!
nailed it with your guess for the 22nd 5:15am sunrise ..
yup the young dont yet understand what it really means to coax nature to your maximum benefit
have you thought about using some of the chicken run as a grape arbour ... a few plants along one or both sides that are run up and over ... they would provide some shade fr the birds and bugs as well and even a few grapes ....I would suggest concorde grapes ...as they are a tasty wine and snack any time
That’s exactly what I planted there, and on the fence there’s a three year old grape that I’m going to train over to the run as well.
@@MySelfReliance seems you are taking to heart getting maximum use from everything... you seems to have some trees that are also good for copsng ... (selected pruning)... plant some Yew in a few places fr making bows as well
hi,i am from China...love your vlog many years...my hometown in a small countryside...my father built a building many years...but nobody lived...what a pity...when i was watching your vlog always made me want to go back that building..and enjoy my life...BTW..welcome to
China...everyone
Gardening some people think throw some seeds in the ground and produce food. Sometimes, but to constantly have food you have to know and recognize the deficiencies and help the process get to the food production. There's no difference when learning to hunt or fish for food, time input is needed to ensure food production at the end.
Thanks again Shawn. Thanks for the tip pruning today!!
You have gone a long way! ❤
Just found your channel. I love your garden. Can't wait for the next one
Greetings from the Faroe Islands. This was a fun and informative video and I have to say I completely agree with getting your hands dirty, growing and harvesting etc. I work as a butcher which opened up my eyes to this way of living - being able to sustain myself on all that I can grow and hunt. The food truly does not get better and of course the pride in one´s work. I´m 33 years old and was inspired to start growing my own potatoes, rhubarbs, berries and such. It´s difficult to imagine a better way of spending one´s time than in the outdoors doing this and living this closely to nature. I´ve had people asking me why I do this rather than simply buying the various food items, and the answer is super simple: Because I can and because I want to. Granted, our climate does not permit me to grow an abundance of things (average temperature is 10-12 degrees Celsius, and it rains like crazy) but what I can, I do. Next up, chicken coop 👍.
Thanks for the inspiration!
What a great life... that the things you do to provide and survive are also the things you love to do and find meaning in. So good!
Thanks Shawn love it 💖💕👍🥰❤️🙏🇺🇸
So so envious in a great way.
I LOVE YOUR GARDENS ,THEY REALLY ARE DOING WELL😊❤❤❤.
Hola mi Amigo. Me gustan todos tus videos felicidades 🐕 Chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱
I'm 45 and love your channel, people don't realize the millions of reasons that their jobs, bank, and grocery could close next week! Keep It coming :) It is a literal inspiration.
Мастер на все руки👍💪. Молодец!!!
Hi Shawn, I am not one that is writing often comments in your channels but I am watching your videos with interest. You are very good in all you are doing, my compliments.
I studied agriculture so why I would like to tell you something. I was surprised to see you cutting apples and other trees!
As I know apples should not be cut at all because it is not good for this tree. And generally trees should be cut between February and March, when the tree is still sleeping and not in the active period now.
When you cut and clean these trees now you make the tree open to get some illness with rain or insects that will go to drink their nectars!
Imagine you cut your finger and leave it open, surely you will get some infection.
The same is with the trees, be careful with them. You can clean only some leaves with illness but in all these cases with illness, trees will need some treatment and better ask some specialist for it.
love love this
Thankyou ,for all you have done with. The family an your home. Injoy your channel
Sir! You would be the coolest Uncle to spend time with over summer break and Holidays. I wish I could offer those experiences to my son's. I wish you were my Uncle! Hats off to you Sir Sean.... I do have a cool Uncle named Jim, passed on your videos to him and I think he subscribed lol... sidenote - you ever thought of running for prime minister? Just thinking if you can manage the land you have so well and be self sufficient, thriving and at sametime helping your neighbors/wildlife... what coukd you do with the country of Canada!!
Thanks for sharing Shawn. 😁👍🏼
... Yeah ! ... there is a new channel on TH-cam !!! .. called .. " Life The Jungle " .. with your videos in timelapse ... Voila ! ... just want you to know about this ...
Love the flowers
I know you've said Dick Proenneke was one of your first people to inspire you to this lifestyle and I think it's safe to say you've basically said to Dick "hold my beer" 😉
As a fellow maker/builder that's starting to now dabble in to the food gardening world (thanks to you), I love your "food production" videos. Like to hear your take on "how and why" you're doing something in the garden.
I think you're inspiring people, so keep on living for a "living". Thanks for posting.... Good stuff my man...
Love your place!
Really enjoyed the video 👍🐕🦺
merci JAMES
You are yourself becoming a part of nature's life cycle, WELL DONE!
Love the gardening and chickens! Im 37, is that young? Doesn't feel like it.
🎵Oats, peas, beans and barley grow🎵 Happy Summer!
Huh...I prune end of winter and a clean up at end of summer...Im going to have to go out and have a look now. I planted a single Toka last year and have wild plums near by for pollinators.
I would recommend you planning herbs hot herbs hot peppers garlic oregano things like that around your garden what it does is it put the barrier between your central Garden and the outside and lots of bugs hate garlic they hate hot peppers oregano and Thyme and basil certain bugs just don't like that stuff it's a natural pesticide
Definitely everything you do turns to gold
👍💪👍
Awesome as always! Thank you for sharing. Why are you using AG1, thanks?
First view
Are you raising or do you have Elderberries growing in the wild? That is the best anti-viral and immune booster. I have used it for about four years now. It is amazing.
I have several cultivated elderberries and there are lots of wild ones here too
Watch out for snakes under the grass.
shawn why dont you use electroculture in garden
👍🏴
We like to know what you’re doing with all that food and vegetables you’re practically by yourself how much can you eat!
Gostaria que tivesse tradução em português Brasil
I love all your videos, and been watching since you started the last old cabin. I'm wondering who convinced you to stop eating vegetables and why? Vegetables are so healthy for you, and provide nutrients and vitamins you can't get from other foods. That's why we need to eat different types of food everyday, each have their own nutrients that our bodies need. Just meat, or just fruits and veg that some choose to eat, is not getting the benefit of all the nutrients. Natural foods are the best source of all nutrients we need. I used take a lot of vitamins and supplements, thinking I was being really healthy, but I don't really know what all is in them, and our FDA, at least in the U.S. are allowing companies to put whatever they want, or leave out what they want, to sell products, so I don't trust them.
Do you use molasses traps?
Mutlu insan kendine yeten insan
I don't know if it's impossible to keep fish alive in a manmade pond in Canada all four seasons ongoing continuously or if that manmade pond would just freeze over probably and kill all of the fish in it. Maybe you know better. The only thing I can think of is keep fish in an indoor aquarium instead by a fireplace that's keeping the area heated but it still needs the water aerated or whatever. Oxygen in the water. It sucks to get the water right and keep it right until you become an expert at it I guess.
When Sean prunes trees in the summer, he can introduce pests. You can't do that.
.
Когда Шон обрезает летом деревья он может занести в стволы обрези вредителей. Это нельзя делать.
👍🇸🇪❤️
For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.

Time flies when one really enjoying gardening or farming
I finally tried gardening this year and your videos were a huge reason why! My friend and I started seeds and built a hügelkultur garden bed in his parents backyard using stuff we found around the neighborhood (we lucked out after finding a recently cut down tree and some huge bags of dried leaves). We managed to grow a single (1) tiny beefsteak tomato and I treasured it so much I almost didn’t want to eat it 😂. We started really late in the season though so I’m just glad that the plants haven’t spontaneously combusted in this heat (Deep South TX, it’s been over 100F since the end of May so there’s still a chance that it could happen 🔥😅). My friend had to move for work so I’ve been walking to his parents house to water the plants everyday. I still have a lot to learn for sure but it’s been a great experience so far. I’m a relatively young guy (26) so don’t count us all out lol!
Kolay gelsin, meyvalar olmaya başlamış, emeğinize elinize sağlık olsun, afiyetle yiyin.
Your garden is very impressive! I just set up automatic watering for my 3 greenhouses, it’s a nice break!
I so relate to producing and preserving my own food.
Great video once again ❤
Peace and Tranquility Shawn 🙆🏼♂️
Amazing work 🤲🏻
My farm / homestead is working 24 / 7 all 4 seasons long now far better than
before
Feliz entrada del verano para ustedes!! Aca en Uruguay entro el invierno. Saludos!!!
thats right shawn - giv the chickens some green plants , it will give the eggs more taste and the egg yolk more yellow color ...
Shawn, I appreciate all of your videos. Please provide whatever content you feel is interesting to you and most of us will find it interesting as well! ❤
Ciezka praca przynosi efekty ❤
Great video Shawn. There’s a reason we went from hunter gatherers to farmers. It’s the only way you can set down roots. Pun intended.
I showed my wife your coop, now she feels the need to want one...........
🤣🤣🤣ЖОСТЬ
Me too 💚
Great strategy
😅
can't tell if that was a rookie mistake or a pro move 🤔
Сточки зрения современного человека Вы грандиозный мужчина. Столько навалять одному это не мыслимо. Большого счастья Вам. ❤❤❤❤
I saw the chippies and am amazed you're picking beautiful strawberries without bites taken! it's all just so lovely! ♥
Ha, not many make it into long term storage.
It looks like you can grow almost everything, that is very good. I look forward to see all your crops in the fall of this year.
Have you considered keeping bees and collecting your own honey?
There are some interesting DIY setups that would be fun projects.. I've seen them hanging in clear plastic tubes.. and there's also an auto harvest setup that looks cool.. Maybe four hundred to get it all going. Well worth it.. But then again, he already has maple syrup
