Ethiopia’s GERD: Second phase of dam filling ‘nearly completed’

  • Ethiopia's state media is reporting that the second phase of filling of the country’s controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is nearly complete.
    The issue has raised tensions with Ethiopia’s neighbours, Egypt and Sudan.
    They want a binding agreement over the dam's operations and have approached the United Nations Security Council to intervene.
    Ethiopia says the project is essential to its development, but Cairo and Khartoum fear it could restrict their water access.

      So it looks like the 1902 and 1959 Nile agreements with Ethiopia and other Nile nations never existed to Ethiopians and violating those agreements brought the conflict. That's very unfortunate for a failing state to re-write its own history and even used US money to build its dam. Without aids, Ethiopia would be nothing but a complete failed state.

      well, lets put this the other way. If Sudan and Egypt dont want the dam to be completed - offer the Ethiopians something! Build a nuclear powerplant with them etc? Destroying the dam what the ethiopians collected with their own money will spark tensions and conflicts for decades. Besides that Egypt didnt like that the others were owning the Suez canal. Kinda 2 faced situation here. Besides that Ethiopia has over 100 mil population. Pretty bad situation for Sudan if they will invade while having unsettled business with S. Sudan. Egypt will have to support them and move forces to Sudan while leaving Libya to terrorists and Turkey. Ethiopias inner conflicst will end as soon as the elites of Ethiopia will share its power with north. If they will complete the dam they wont even have to do that. The dam project will increase Ethiopias political influence thru increased goods production in the region and make it a considerable player. They will contest heavily Egypts influence in the region. Ofc, its good to share with the neighbors but leaving Ethiopia empty handed is not a choice either.

      @@hassanalhussein3982 you don't know what is happening in tigray region. I know you heard BBC or Aljazzera a lot that's why you talk like this fool. No one loose war in the region. the reason the Ethiopian army removes its military out of tigray is to stop the hunger in the region and to give time for the farmer to plough And concentrate on the dam. Do you know that the rebel group has up to 200,000 soldiers? that is why the war is very severe. And notice that only 30% of the army is engaged to fight the group. And also the group hide itself in the civilian( camouflaged) you know that? So it becomes difficult to use airstrikes. If the whole region were the enemy of Ethiopia, then the war would end early. So that is why I said only Ethiopians know what is happening in Ethiopia now. I advice you not to believe BBC or Aljazeera.

    I don't think Egypt and Sudan understand how the Dam works. Dont they realize there is more water entering the dam site than the volume of water that can physically pass through the two open outlets in the dam wall? 60-110 million cubic meter passes every day. What I think the problem is that Ethiopia for the first time can keep data on the water flow and cut the excess before it reaches Egypt idk maybe they sell the water to Arab countries or something but trust me the tension is not about the dam.

    • @mandandi
      @mandandi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they know how much water Egypt and Sudan needs, plus how much rainfall reaches the dam site. So, they can work out how much to keep each year in dam after catering for the needs of the downstream neighbours.

All media is controlled by the government. In this climate, the only way you can contain political pressure is to make up a conflict that people can rally against. Egypt and Sudan will benefit by the dam since the floods will be controlled (hence much less risk of flooding in Sudan and drought in Egypt). Both countries can also import cheap electricity since the dam will produce enough electricity for Ethiopians need short term (when it’s completed).
