I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to add that the house you are sorted into has the qualities that you value most. So a hufflepuff can be very brave, but he values kindness, loyalty, and friendship over bravery. This is also why the sorting hat takes a person's opinion into consideration. Harry had a lot of Slytherin qualities, but he basically told the hat that he didn't value those qualities, so the hat put him in Gryffindor. For me personally, I feel like I could be a pretty good fit for Ravenclaw, but I value the Hufflepuff qualities more, so I'm always sorted into Hufflepuff. I hope this helps someone using this for their characters!
YAY FOR HUFFLEPUFF! I love the idea of shorting characters into their houses. Might have to try this. These daily vlogs are seriously my favorite. I look forward to them every day!
Goodness Jenny/Ginny/Jinny and Augustine sound like such lovely people!! :) I thought their results would be flipped based on your description. I don't know very much about Harry Potter but I do this sort of thing all the time where I stop and do quizzes for my characters. For example, which Sailor Senshi would they be or what ice cream flavor lolol (According to Buzzfeed Bronia is Neapolitan, Daisy is Dolce de Leche and the Lonely Warrior is Butter Pecan - according to me Bronia is one scoop lemon, one scoop caramel, Daisy is something with hot sauce in it, probably chocolate with hot sauce topping, and the Lonely Warrior is dark chocolate with raspberry and blackberry bits lolol) Yeah sometimes I don't agree with the quizzes either lol but they're fun
I love the idea of sorting characters into Hogwart’s Houses. Love the vlog! You are so good for motivation. For me, I always struggle because November always seems like the busiest time of the year for me 😂😂😂
Definitely give it a try! It was so much fun and the test was kind of nice to ruminate on my characters outside of the surroundings I've given them in the story!! And awww, thank you! :) I'm with you, November is just SO TOUGH. I've found both the Camps come at a better time in my life bahaha, but I know that's part of the reason they have NaNo in November!
What a brilliant idea!!! And I love that you're going to incorporate it into the book! It's so weird how you can be so stuck, then boom, everything flows again lol!
The thing I love about sorting my characters is that even if I already know what their house would be, the questionnaire gets me thinking about them and sometimes gives me insight on its own. I find it really helps me get into their head if I’m stuck. Which reminds me that I didn’t actually do this for these characters yet, so I’m gonna go do that now!
OOOH let me know what they get! :) Yes, that was such an added bonus! I sped through parts of it, but there were several questions where I was like "oh, huh, I guess this IS what they would do...how can I bring that up or how does it affect them?" Which is awesome!
I found out my MC is a Ravenclaw like me (which I expected), and my two SCs are a Hufflepuff and a Slytherin. The Slytherin surprised me but now that I think about it it really suits her. I think this may have been a breakthrough! :D
I was worried about day 7, but I got a lot written right at the very end. Confession I've never read Harry Potter (more of a Wizard of Earthsea fan), but looking up about the Hogwarts Houses, I would say the narrator character, Harold Hythlodaeus, is Hufflepuff. My utopian character, Alex Briggs, is likely Gryffindor. My two historical characters, Phaedo of Elis and Echecrates of Phlius (and probably me too), are certainly Ravenclaw. And my villain, , Greg G. Smith, who is somewhat of a reactionary demagogue and definitely cunning, would be at home in Slytherin. Ragdolls are lovely, calm and floppy creatures. They're like puppies in the bodies of cats.
YAY glad your Day 7 worked out well! :) I somehow hadn't heard of A Wizard of Earthsea but OMG I immediately put it on my library hold list! I love that you have multiple characters spread out amongst the houses!! (And awww yay! Ragdoll cats sound amazing!)
A little late for this advice but if you go to wizardmore.com you get all of the quizzes on Pottermore (sorting, patronus, wands) but you don't have to make individual profiles
I legit have a "Hogwarts House" field in my character profiles. It's such an easy way to identify their personalities! Each of my four MCs are in a different House, probably because they fit perfectly into the four temperament ensemble which in itself fits into the four Houses. I've never done the Pottermore sorting for them, though... I think I might have to do that for next week's writing vlog!
It may be early in the process but I have to say thank you. I for the first time in my NaNoWriMo journey I am ahead of my monthly goal and I think it's in part because you turned me on to the idea of working on multiple projects at once. I was sick the first 2 days of NaNo so I didn't write a word but I hit 11,991 tonight. So thank you.
AWWW YAY! I'm so glad! :) :) Congrats on your 11,991 words! YOU GOT THIS! :) (And seriously, working on multiple projects saaaaved me the past couple days.)
I love knowing my characters inside and out, and this was actually something I did for a few of mine a while back just for laughs. I, myself, and a proud Slytherin, while my OC Phoebe is a true Gryffindor (she's actually a lot like book!Ginny thinking on it now) while my OC Ruby is a Hufflepuff for sure. Now I just need a Ravenclaw ;) :D
This is super great advice and what I ~usually~ do, but since this is a re-write, I'm putting extra pressure on myself to fill in everything as it comes hahah. But honestly? If I struggle much more with this, I'll definitely do that! AND THANK YOU! :) :)
Hi Kate because I’ve outlined everything I don’t have any problem to know what to write but I have the same problem of you with motivation that happened because of my other goals, grrr ^^ Watch nano vlogs helps and yours are great and funny 😃 And I’ve always this problem of fear that my novel will be too short, I mean it’s just 40 pages right now and I’m at chapter 9 on 22-25 💩
So glad you got over your hurdle, I know the feeling and that Sorting Quiz is a clever way of getting to know your characters better. I took the quiz for my three main characters (even though in their universe Harry Potter doesn't exist lolz). My MC is Gryffindor (no surprise there since she's bold, passionate and brave), her BFF is Hufflepuff (again, no surprise since he's reserved, rational and down-to-earth) and her nemesis is Slytherin (spot on since she's sneaky, resourceful and not afraid to bend the rules to her advantage). This helped me see my characters in a new light and gave them extra depth. Sadly, I've only written 8,690 words so far and I had to drop the second project since it was getting too much for me to balance. I'm doing the YA anime-inspired editing and revisions so I'm an all-out Nano Rebel. I doubt I'm gonna win Nano this year, I've already accepted my fate. But I'm LOVING what my story has evolved into and look forward to seeing daily Nano vlogs on how my other writer buddies are progressing as well.
AWW YAY, I'm glad it helped you too! It helped me much more than I thought it would. And I love the number of different houses represented in your story. :) WOOHOO all out rebel! I totally get what you mean about having to drop projects. I feel like I'm not capable of dedicating quite enough time to all of my projects either. It's like I just haven't decided which to drop yet. :/ BUT! So glad you're loving what your story is becoming. :) :)
I'm trying to pants a novel for the first time, and I'm struggling with scenes being incredibly anticlimactic, then going back and changing them and creating offshoot timelines and I'm getting the words down but I'm also making a mess. It's going well, just a very messy kind of well. It's hard to explain. I guess I'd say I'm struggling to write linearly? I glad you got through your problem spot, though!
That totally completely makes sense! That's exactly what I struggle with when pantsing too! (And honestly, what I struggle with a lot of the time even when outlining since I often get a new idea halfway through that I realize is MUCH better or solves a problem or whatever.) I'll keep my fingers crossed for you !:)
No more whole day writeathons for you :P I figured out in the middle of Alex's write in tonight that my story wants to be written in present tense rather than past. I don't think I've ever written in present tense so now I not only have to change everything that I've written so far but I have to be conscious about it while I write the rest of it. I'm only at like 4k, and you meanwhile are CRUSHING IT!!!!!
BAHAHA RIGHT. One day was legit recovery, the other day was not being able to get myself "unstuck" bahaha. So maybe that's the other lesson! Leave off where you know exactly what happens/how it happens next. I SAW YOU SAID THAT!! Ohmygosh. Thankfully you figured it out early on!! That's one of my unwarranted "fears" is that I'll realize halfway through that I got either the perspective or POV or tense wrong. (Even though I'd have to rework it again after the zero/first draft.) But seriously, figuring it out early will be so helpful! And I think it's awesome that this project spoke to you enough to be like NO this is the right way.
I always sort my characters at the beginning of every project xD I'm a Gryffindor, so almost all my main characters end up there, whoops xD. A good tip: the pottermore quiz only gives users a fraction of all possible questions. So there's a chance your characters got their "secondary" houses. If you google around for "all possible questions" quizzes, it's much more accurate. I'm enjoying these vlogs; this is the first year I'm attempting Nano and it's nice to hear another person's way of working through it xD
It's such a great idea! I think I'm going to start doing it for all my projects too bahaha, it's just fun! And oooh, I wonder who the first character I write that will be in the same house as me now! That's a great point, I'll go search for some of the others questions next time I'm procrastinating hahaha. (AND AHHHH your first year doing NaNo! THAT'S SO EXCITING! Yeah, some days are really good and some days aren't as great, but it's always nice hearing how others are doing and that you're not alone in the ups and downs.)
I think my Mc would be ravenclaw, but I’m still getting to know my characters as I write this first draft. I’ve just been struggling to keep up with my word count, especially during the work week. I’ve been taking it a little bit easy the past few days as I edit a video but I plan to catch up and get ahead this weekend. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too!! NaNo is such a difficult juggling act. And I feel like I'm still getting to know mine too. The sorting hat test surprisingly helped bahaha. I feel like I just end up adding layers and layers each new draft, which is fun, and definitely adds dimension.
oooh, what a fantastic idea. Using personality quizzes for the characters. STEALING!! (sheepish as I listen to the rest of the video) My Main character is a Ravenclaw.
YESSSS DO IT!! One of my fav things about authortube and listening to other writers is hearing what I can steal and attempt to use myself. 😂 And heeeeeey another Ravenclaw! (Even in character form bahaha.)
My main character would be a Slytherclaw (Slytherin/Ravenclaw) because she loves learning new things, but she is ambitious. You don't get your but on the Emperor's throne without ambition.
My big struggle has been and will probably continue to be whether my story is far enough removed from the show/ characters that inspired it. Had a crisis moment thinking that the "inciting incident" might be too close to the show pilot's, wondering if I could change it, but then I'd have to change the nature of the antagonist, and the whole pseudoscience underlying how/ why they do what they do and... bleh. Today I'm over it. Honestly, if this setup could be seen as deriving too closely to anything, it would be Spiderman. On a superficial level, ok, fire. But she didn't lose the love of her life to it and go on a revenge quest. She realized she'd had a potential opportunity to prevent it but had buried her head in a sand pile of rationalizations, and now a whole bunch of people are dead. So not driven by revenge but rather guilt. Tomorrow I may be back to doom and gloom land. Who knows? I love that you sorted them into Hogwarts houses! What a great idea!
😂 The question is always if tomorrow is going to be really good or doom and gloom! Totally understand worrying if something is too close to source material and/or too close to another kind of popular story. And also wanting to lean into some tropes but not too far or not into too many, etc. etc. etc. It's such a struggle to balance. And I can't quite remember - do you post your fanfiction stories somewhere?
@@KateCavanaugh I do. They're all up on An Archive of Our Own. I waffled over linking it, but what the heck. archiveofourown.org/users/firefly124/profile
Day 5 and 6 were dificult for me and by the end of day 6 I was 1 day behind on the wordcount. But on day 7 I wrote so much that I even hit the word count for day 8 already. 😊 I noticed that my MC's personality is still a bit flat. So thinking in what Hogwarts house they would be was really fun. I am torn between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. Which is funny, because I dont really like Gryffindor. I think it's a bit cliche for a MC to be the hero. But some how it does fit her. And I am a Hufflepuff myself. So I think thats fitting too. As I put a lot of myself in her as well. I think Ill take the test for her this afternoon to make sure. 😊
Oooh let me know how it goes! I loved weighing what I thought initially (because I found it almost more illuminating) against the "actual answers" according to the quiz! :) And your Day 5 and 6 sounded similar to mine! I'm hoping I can follow your lead and also get ahead soon. :)
@@KateCavanaugh She is a Gryffindor. :) Yeah, thought as much. And I like that she is not a Hufflepuff like me. I don't want to make the main character look too much like me. :)
My main character is suuuch a Hufflepuff, but he'd be the Hufflepuff seeker and would also be friends with many Slytherins. His love interest of whom is one. My third character of my 'big 3' would a beater on the Gryffindor Quidditch team and would mostly socialize with other Gryffindors, and select 'Puffs. Oh, and my 1k word sentence! 'Kay so I realized Word was miscounting at the start, so "Away, that Erik" was a lie and is no more 😩My sentence right now reads: "for you about than Dominic all was getting the France band hotel". Idk but The France Band Hotel sounds like a fun place to be. Or good as a band name itself?
I LOVE HOW MUCH YOU KNOW. That's so perfect. Also I love calling Hufflepuffs just 'Puffs bahaha. This is just making me want to get back into reading Harry Potter fanfiction. It sounds like a band name to me too!! And I love how these sentences ALMOST MAKE SENSE what is this magic?!
I've been struggling a lot to actually just get the words down. I know what I want to write, I just don't have the motivation. I think it's just this plot, I've lost interest.
Awww man, yeah, that's tough! Have you tried skipping around to a part that interests you? That's what I do in the zero draft stage. Otherwise, I've heard some people write their characters into totally different situations/place them in other books, just so that they're writing and being "productive"? Or maybe is there a part of the story that ~feels wrong~ and that's what's blocking you? It's not too late to change your NaNo project if you want to write something else!!
Not that I know Prince Augustine's personality/character at all, but.... as a people-pleasing, "servant-leader" manager who also happens to be a Gryffindor, I see nothing wrong with his house, lol. I'm just saying, there are a few of us "Huffle-dors" out there. (Though I feel more like a "Gryffin-claw", truthfully). And, having him sorted into Gryffindor can actually add to their banter--- since there are quite a few "anti-Gryffindor" fans out there. They feel we MUST think we're special/chosen ones like Harry. And, nobody wants to be in the "popular" house...etc., etc., etc. It's kind of a "fun" sore-spot for Gryffindors that are surrounded by larger portions of other houses. Everybody has been sorted at the bookstore where I work, and for a while I was the ONLY Gryffindor...because, bookstore = Ravenclaw-central. So, it's always interesting to have conversations with customers who've also been sorted. The rivalry is there, for sure. And, apparently only us "special" folk wind up in Gryffindor, lol... Also....as he's a mink----any plans to make him a "swimmer" of some sort? Award-winning? Olympic-hopeful? Does he have a fondness for fish/crustaceans? I do find it eerily-ironic that he gets a patronus of an animal who has been hunted to near extinction for their fur. The correlation to his being kidnapped for money (skinned for his fur to be sold) is a bit frightening... Annnd, as minks are from the same family as the ferret and weasel, there could be some fun stuff there, too :-)
BAHAHA YESSSS! That's almost exactly what happens. They definitely poke fun at each other as a means of amusement and arguing over what the quiz says versus what the other thinks their "true house" is. I even have them talking about being Huffledoors and Slytherpuffs! I can't even an imagine a sorting full of bookstore people. In my family, we're all different, so we have similarly fun/light-hearted/...serious debates bahaha. That's a fantastic point about being in the ferret and weasel family! I'm totally going to use that now!! THANK YOU! :) And I love the symmetry, another excellent point!:)
Ahhh, you and me both! Sometimes Zero Word Days are super important for your mental health! At least one of those days was for me (the other one was me just struggling with this story bahaha).

My MC's Godly patent would probably be Hecate... Or Apollo. I'm making it so once she becomes Luna, she have the power to recite prophecies
That sounds SO AWESOME!! Prophecies are so much fun to read.
Maybe Augustine was a hatstall. 😂 My current main character is a Hufflepuff I think. Also she would be a water Bender.
@@KateCavanaugh Right!!! Ahaha I see what you did there. Magic. Hahahah
I did not write yesterday
Ahhh, you and me both! Sometimes Zero Word Days are super important for your mental health! At least one of those days was for me (the other one was me just struggling with this story bahaha).
I got out of my stuck place today
WOOHOO congrats!
