    What a great take on a lens review. I actually guessed wrong in the digital vs film comparison. It’s surprising how well the lens holds up on film. And I didn’t know about the ‘smearing’ that some lenses can do, I learnt something new today.

      Thank you very much for the comment! I'm glad the comparison was challenging (and the color correction on digital convincing haha!). The smearing on digital is a very interesting topic as well, I need to go back and refresh my memory on the topic but it is something that affects wider angle lenses on digital. It is also a reason to prefer Leica digital over mirrorless, with better performance with rangefinder lenses.

    Damn those are some nice results, I’d love to see more content from you! Whats the process like getting a lens converted with Miyazaki?

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for the comment! I really appreciate it. Although I have several converted lenses, I havent actually gone through the process of converting a lens myself. Mr. Miyazaki cant convert every compact lens and the ones I had been interested in converting weren't possible at the time. I should check back in and see because its been a few years since I last asked. Now the process might take more time as shipping from Japan is a bit restricted but the results are fantastic and I plan on doing more MS optics related videos in the near future! Thanks!

    Can I ask how you got this lens converted through MS OPTICS? I thought he didn't do conversion anymore

      Hello and thanks for the comment! I bought this lens already converted. I have not heard anything about ms optical conversions no longer being an option but it could be a possibility...

    Good video. Miyazaki-san's creations need to get more coverage on TH-cam.

      Thank you very much for the great comment! I really appreciate it and Mr Miyazaki makes some of the coolest lenses for rangefinders as well as the top class conversions. I have several original and conversions I intend to talk about in video form here so I hope you look forward to that! Thank you!

      @@TheWholePicture awesome! Just followed you. Out of curiosity, have you ever been to Kanto camera in Japan? I’ve seen their custom painted cams and I’ve always been a fan. Not a lot of people want their Leica taken apart to be painted, but I wanted to know what the take of someone living in Japan was.

      Thank you so much! Hopefully this year I can get more videos and photos out into the world. I have never been to the actual physical Kanto Camera location in Kawasaki, although they do sell used equipment I don't know if their office has a showroom/sales floor. They are most well known for their repairs and customization with a really good reputation! I have used their battery adapters which have been a great way to breathe new life into cameras from the 70s with old style batteries that havent been around for a while.
      Haha there are all kinds of leicas for sale here. More than in the states, I think quite a few of them are almost what you would consider refurbished with new paintjob and all. I personally have a repainted leica, but thats how I bought it. The paintjob was done in the UK I believe and unfortunately they didn't sand down the top and bottom plate to the brass so as the paint fades you can see the silver... I'm pretty sure at Kanto they'll sand it down before painting and in general the serve here is top-notch almost anywhere you go! For a while I had wanted to get my main kit painted all black but it's not my priority any more. The customization I still would like is removing frame lines and those kinds of modifications on more modern leicas haha

      @@TheWholePicture oh that’s awesome to hear! I really love that they can repair these cameras into working conditions. Leicas here are not easy to come by indeed, and when you find them they are not often tested (unless they can charge an arm and a leg for a recent model), so that’s frustrating. I’d love to visit one day in a few years and get a camera custom painted.

      The great thing about leicas and other full manual cameras is they are much more repairable than 90s compacts! Yeah... I've gambled on a few cameras on eBay, luckily theyve been good but at most used shops here you can rest assured the cameras work well! Unfortunately the prices here have skyrocketed. Even a few years ago it was still possible to get a great bargain find, but now its not near impossible on leicas and popular brands. It's still a ton of fun to go around all the shops though!! I do a fair bit of window shopping at the various film camera shops across tokyo. Japan is an amazing place to visit and hopefully things calm down and people can start visiting again! I dont know how long the paintjobs are but Im sure Japan camera hunter can set up something if you want Kanto to do some work for you!

    Not clear why you would want to adapt the lens of a high-end point-n-shoot to your digital camera. This particular Nikon lens taken from a 35Ti is exactly the same lens Nikon used for their standard F-mount 35mm 2.8, as well as a number of other Nikon plastic cameras. if you are devoted to the result. It would be cheaper to buy a used Nikkor plus a F-mount to your digital camera adapter, compared to a non-reversible custom adaption of the 35Ti lens to whatever. While this lens is much better than than many used in P-n-S cameras, if not the best, it's nothing special in the world of SLR 35mm cameras, so why bother?

    • @TheWholePicture
      @TheWholePicture  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thank you for the comment! I think a lot of people convert lenses from their favorite compacts after they break or no longer function correctly. It also allows these fantastic optics from fully auto or semi auto cameras to be used on digital or say a fully manual film cameras for the first time.
      I don't have any expereince with Nikon f lenses and couldn't find anything about what you said in a quick google search, but the optical design looks different and the weight, size and flange distance is certainly different so it is unlikely they are the exact same lens. Nikon may have used the optics in another PnS, but I am not aware of any. It is true that this conversion process is irreversible like you say, but to many owners of a broken compact it will be better than having a fancy paperweight. To your last point, I would argue that it is something special compared to more mass produced SLR and mirrorless lenses. For any given PnS, I'd guess only a handful of people own a converted version of the lens(if anyone owns one at all). That could give the owners a unique lens that renders pleasing images to them, or might satisfy collectors knowing it is rare. To me, I think it is unique because of its tiny size and light weight, even among rangefinder 35mm f/2.8 lenses. I admit it isnt perfect, but people go out of their way nowadays to find uniquely "flawed" optics that suit their ideal look and this is certainly a lens that fits that description. As far as the video goes, I haven't seen a proper comparison like this online so I wanted to provide some information for those interested in this kind of conversion.
