    My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.
    FAQ:
    How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
    What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
    You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
    Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
    What do you film with? - I currently film almost exclusively with my Samsung Galaxy S8: amzn.to/2lPKSpZ
    How do you get those shots where you're walking or running? - A Joby Gorillapod for smartphones, like this: amzn.to/2sXNIL3
    You drop your phone a lot, how does it survive? - THIS CASE IS AMAZING: amzn.to/2hoxgTA (Galaxy S7) - amzn.to/2Dt08Bu (Galaxy S8) - amzn.to/2FxVliP (iPhone)
    What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
    Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
    Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
    But what are you doing there? - Living it up! • What Am I Doing in Paris?
    Do you speak French? Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
    You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here: • The Pitch (Sorta) - Ag...
    Do you make money off TH-cam? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
    I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
    I don't trust this Patreon thing - what's your PayPal? - Here's a handy link! www.paypal.me/...
    I like PayPal in pink! - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
    But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

    I don't know what exactly is "chives" for you, but if it's just for seasoning you should be able to easily find ciboulette (fresh or frozen, so in the fresh vegetables or in the frozen food aisles), but it's more seen as an herb rather than a vegetable here. Or look for "Ciboule"

    This proves that the gamble you took a year ago was definitely the right choice. Aside from proving to the French government how much you’ve grown since you first arrived, take a moment to look back and contemplate for yourself how transformative these short twelve months have been. Cheers to that 🥂

    LOL....not sure I could cope if your YT video's got any better or more fun! I think they are great already. You are the only YTer that I watch daily.... probably cos I LOVE Paris and I am living vicariously thru your videos. But you do a great job of filming, editing, sharing etc. I am sure having your residency will hit you eventually. I just completed a Post Grad and its taken while for me to comprehend that I actually passed it. And that stress is over.

    Jay when you come to Amsterdam you need to visit a bike shop. The owner of said shop used the visa route I described yesterday. You can find him at his shop not far from your hotel. Shop called Work cycles, Lijnbaansgracht 32B-Hs 1015GP A'dam. Maybe he can hook you up with a bike to use in France 😎

    The way to become a faster runner is to do intervals. I guarantee that it will work and quickly. There are an infinite number of structured interval work outs you can google or you can just do "fartlek." You can google "fartlek training," but it just means you throw in some sprints of varying length when you feel like it. I like to do some all out sprints of around 100m combined with just picking up the pace for a few minutes.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fartlek training sounds dangerous and potentially smelly ;D I've been wanting to do some interval training at some point though. Thanks!

    comment on the running......I know everyone wants to get faster but go longer 1st and when I mean longer I mean by time. I was a competative runner many yrs ago & concentrated on short fast runs which got me to 36min 10ks and just over 3hr marathons. Then one day I started running with a friend who did sub 3hr marathons. Our 1st run was over 3hrs long and it was at a slow pace!! I was like WTF?? I never trained over an hr before or even that slow. But after a couple months of 2-3 a wk long runs I was ready for a 10k. I ran under 34min!! I was stoked. Ran another marathon and ran 2:47!! It was the long runs that built my stamina and since the speed was already there it was icing on the cake. After that I never trained by distance anymore, it was all by time. So throw out those measured loop runs if you can and just run out a certain time and run back. Hope this helps.....

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      GREAT advice! Thanks. If you go back you'll see that as a goal I want to get a long run in once a week for this very reason, to build endurance, however I was thinking of it purely as length in distance, not time. This really helps to modify that strategy - the 7mi I ran was just over an hour I think. I'm gonna go look it up now... yeah, 1hr 3min. It felt great aside from two of my toes complaining for a couple of days. But that was really it. I think I'll focus on time and push it up to 1hr30 and up from there a couple of times a week. It's much less intimidating to go for time than to set out for a distance for some reason. I'm aiming for a half marathon at this point - the full deal sounds like death haha. Thanks for sharing!

    • @thedavidguy01
      @thedavidguy01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree because virtually all serious endurance athletes (runners, cyclists, x-country skiers, tri-athletes, etc.) train by time not distance. OTOH, I disagree about the 3 hour runs unless you want to do marathons. If I were training for 10k, I'd make my longest run about 70 - 90 minutes. Twice the time of your target race time or a bit more is enough. I was a competitive runner for 10 years and then a competitive cyclist for 20 years. Long runs really destroy your body over the years (which is why I switched to cycling). You can do long rides because it is so much easier on your body than running. I know people who have been able to do long runs for decades but 99% of us cannot; so I hate to see people doing too many long runs.
