Steaming to Legacy is a unique retrospective fan documentary that tells the story of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, and his beloved children’s book series about the Fat Controller’s really useful engines, which eventually become a phenomenal franchise for over seventy years.
Featuring the voice of Enterprisingengine93, along with archival footage, pictures and interview audios from behind the scenes.
The legendary story begins while living in the house, which was located 200 yards from the western end of Box tunnel from 1920 to 1928; Wilbert Awdry lay in bed as a child and imagined as if the trains were talking to each other.
This had later become an inspiration for his stories about Edward, Gordon and Henry after his son, Christopher, was bedridden with measles in a family house at South Birmingham.
On Christmas 1942 after writing stories for ‘The Three Railway Engines’, which was first published on May 12th, 1945 by Edmund Ward, Wilbert made a wooden toy of a tank engine as a present for Christopher, who christened the name ‘Thomas’.
After ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ was published on October 1946, Wilbert went on to write further engine stories annually until 1970, when he entered his semi-retirement as we learn more about Thomas, his friends and their adventures on Sodor based in real life railway incidents.

I was watching this in the family living room one day. At exactly the 20:40 mark, I saw my father walk by and upon seeing the screen, dropped his jaw at the image, and immediately sat down and watched the rest of this with me. He had watched Shining Time with my half brother back in the 90s, and I watched the dvds of classic Thomas, and saw the HIT era on TV in the early 2000s. He ended up growing so much respect for the man, and we ended up watching all the way up to part 5. Upon seeing the part of wilberts stained glass window, he had tears streaming down his face. Right after the part of how wilbert wanted to be remembered, he replied "Amen" He sadly passed away from ALS in late 2019, and watching this documentary reminds me of watching it with him
I love this. My childhood was Thomas.
Stepney because he’s relatable in his experiences and his personality, he is one of my favourite colours, and he’s real, among other things. 😁
My favourite Thomas characters are Thomas and Rusty.
Reasons for Thomas: he’s blue (my favourite colour), he’s Number one and he’s cheeky just like I used to be as a child. He really relates to me. I was also inspired by his insane moments in the sixth season episode: Thomas the Jet Engine (my all-time favourite Thomas & Friends episode!).
Fun fact: I had Thomas cakes for my 4th, 6th and 14th birthdays, back in 2008, 2010 and 2018!
Reasons for Rusty: He’s good, nice, kind, helpful and friendly and he’s my favourite diesel in Thomas & Friends. I was also inspired by his heroic rescue in the episode: Rusty to the Rescue (my second favourite Thomas episode), where he rescued Stepney from scrap.
Fun fact: I once had a Rusty cake for my 2nd birthday, back in 2006!
I'd say Edward since he's kind, wise and extremely helpful. Same could be said for Duke.
Thomas is my most favourite character other than Percy, Toby, Edward, James, Henry and Gordon. He was the first engine I knew and reminded me of myself from his cheekiness, his bravery, his hardworking and his reliability.
My favorite character is Cranky the crane. I feel like he's misunderstood, and even though I enjoy stories, I feel sorry for him because he has to put up with Salty's stories. I also feel like he's under appreciated.

Gordon is my favorite Thomas character because I love that he's a fast engine, his color blue, and most of the episodes he starred in. I also love him because his brother, Flying Scotsman is my all-time favorite British steam locomotive, and of course, the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is my favorite British Railway company of the Big Four (before nationalisation).
Edward remains my favorite mostly after I realized he was the first one created. If Thomas is the symbol of the television show then Edward is the reason for The Railway Series.
My Favorite engine is Henry. The reason is because even though he can be mean sometimes, I feel that he is one the the kindest big engines in the story. I loved his love for the forest and also how nice he was to other engines as well as wanting to always work hard even if he needed his special coal. He pushed through all the criticism form the other engines about his mishaps and kept improving!!!
My favorite character in the series would be wilbert, mainly because of how little we know of him, so many scenarios you can put him in!

Fascinating... To answer the question... James, he and I have similar personalities except for most of the vanity, which is where Percy starts reflecting me more.
Emily is my favorite Because she was the first female steam engine besides lady,and was kind hearted and I know people hate her because she's very bossy in season 8-12,but I still like her

My favorite character is Henry. Something about his personality just feels right.
Not in the newer seasons of course.
Stephen. He's a very old engine who has spent much of his life in a museum, but doesn't let that bother him and he tackles any situation with a comedic approach that is refreshingly humorous.
I don't think that it would be torture for locomotives unless they are vandalised. One place that I know where locomotives are on display that are in very poor condition is Steam town. (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think that they were vandalised (some actually did look vandalised) but they have been slightly rusting away and the interior of one carriage/ coach was completely destroyed. What I mean is that they weren't maintained as much as they should've been. I have no clue why. It's just something I saw in a video with pictures of the place. Besides that, I'm sure that it wouldn't be torture for them.

My favorite character is Emily because even though she can be a bit impatient at times, she's still kind-hearted and sisterly towards the rest of the engines but can't resist a tease from time to time. Plus, she stars in my favorite Brenner era episode to date, "Best Engine Ever" - it's so... superb.

My favorite engine is Lady the Magic Engine.
The first time I saw her in Thomas and the magic railroad I was in awe. She was beautiful and calm and showed that anyone can have their shining time.
my favorite character is Edward the blue engine he is respectful experience and does his best to get the job done is always willing to help and is reliable.
Now this is one of the best documentaries I've seen! As for favorite characters, I love most of the engines in the classic series, but my favorite character is a tie between Thomas and Percy!
Thomas: Because as the main character, he definitely has quite the adventures due to his cheeky, stubborn, yet kind-hearted personality, and a good role model, and the E2 class is my favorite locomotive! Not to mention him , working hard, being optimistic, pleasing everybody and making friends
Is what I like him for more than his cheekiness, and traits that inspire me to be who I am in the real world!
Percy: I always felt myself relate to him, as he definitely has persona we can all relate with! And during the golden age of the classic series, he was always enjoyable! Not to mention I'm as accident prone and naive as he is!

My favourite character is Percy. I love how he's just so innocent and how he doesn't mean to get into trouble. There's only one story in The Railway Series where he's deliberately naughty (Percy Takes the Plunge).
When I was around 7, I got to meet christopher at school as a special guest. I can't believe I also live so close to where the Wilbert was born. My favorite engine is either oliver or stepney. I think purely because of their unusual design compared to the rest of the engins
You must be very lucky to having met Christopher Awdry at school. I remember meeting him three times in person a year in 2010/11.
It can be hard to pick a favourite engine, but your choice of engines is interesting too. They do have unique design of any type of engine.
SmurfyDan I was definitely lucky to grow up in the south of England. I even got to go to a heratege railway and ride in a life like daisy to the site and go in thomas and diesel. Then they had a tug of war. It was amazing
My favorite engine would be Thomas himself. He is very kind hearted, always making sure everyone he meets is happy, and works hard. But he also can be very cheeky like I can be at times.

Amazing! Everything is so wonderfully edited, it's so entertaining! My favourite would probably be Thomas or Edward, Thomas because he's cheeky, and Edward because he's wise, kind and a interesting characters, as are several other characters!

I would give anything to go back to when me and my boy would sit watching the originals and playing for hours with him in his room with his big Thomas train set up, you don’t realise what you have until it’s gone, and ours is gone thanks to parental alienation, for those unfamiliar with PA, it is the most cruel and wicked act one parent can inflict on the other...and the child. Love you Darren, happy memories, love Dad xxxx
My favorite character is Duncan. I've loved Duncan ever since I was little, and he's honestly a very well-developed character. I love how's he's grumpy, and it's hilarious to see him get in trouble for it.
Fantastic documentary. Although the official one on TH-cam was wonderful, I thought there'd be an in-depth one like this made. This wonderful production has certainly filled that gap.
I collected Thomas take-n-play toys since 2005 and I had around 200,000 alot of dublecets and 105,000 accessories and I sold them all yesterday for 2.5 million and note I'm only 14
It's impressive that the SiF and the Wiki (as well as other cited sources) had so much of the info that you used. Another amazing concept of the documentary is that it is a full recollection other than the official documentary on the Thomas TH-cam Page. I wish I was up to speed with everything Thomas has to offer. But alas, I'll leave it to the experts.
As for favourites: Daisy and Ryan, indubitably. Daisy because she was the first character I saw in 1999 at aged 2. And because of that, holds a special place in my heart as my favourite diesel. Ryan is a completely different story. Because he was seen in the SLOTLT Trailer as pulling Annie and Clarabel, people automatically assumed he was to be the bully (even though that was to be the case), but I knew Ryan had the potential to be a good character, so I didn't want to be quick to judge. And I wasn't disappointed one bit with his role in the movie.
Gordon the number 4 engine because he pulls the express.

I was lucky enough to go see a Thomas exhibit in Montecello, IL when I was a wee lad in my Thomas phase. Oh, I was obsessed with the little blue engine and collected the die cast models and wooden sets and played with them all day, making up adventures or reenacting ones from the TV (my parents got me every VHS they could) or the stories. I still have my anthology of every story compiled into one, fully illustrated and well-loved.
Even as I sit here, now a 27 year old man, I still revisit my old friends on Sodor from time to time and that childhood glee and wonder wash over me.
Thomas and Sodor will forever remain that comforting place I can go where my old friends will always be there, waiting for me.
Bill and Ben are my favorite. I've always loved their antics. If I had to choose either of them, I'd say Ben, though I can't say why. Edward, James, Donald, and Douglas are honorable mentions. Great documentary, too! Can't wait for part two!

Thomas has been my favorite engine since my early days.
Thomas,James And Percy are my favorites since they’re the characters I played with the most when I was little.
Percy is my favourite because his book "Percy the Small Engine" for me showed the rise from a mischievous engine to a really useful engine.

Thomas was such a wonderful part of my childhood for me and my brother. And my favorite is Toby. And i sometimes find myself singing the songs form the early show regularly especially at work .... when i would rather be fishing 😅 lol

Thanks for providing such a fantastic history of Thomas and company! I'm familiar with some of this from various places, but it's great to see it all pieced together like this. Also, I've never seen Middleton's drawings before and all due apologies to him and his efforts, but on first sight, I've got to agree with the general public; it was way better the second time around with Dalby. The landscapes are about the same between both men, but for me, the big sticking point is Middleton's engine faces. They wouldn't look out of place if they were on Schultz's Peanuts kids, but they look ridiculously small on what are supposed to be big (I hesitate to say expressive, but given where the franchise would go after him, it's got to be said) train engines! Seriously, that scowl on Henry in the tunnel looks to me just like one Snoopy might have in the '60s or '70s. It's uncanny!
My fave Thomas character is Toby the Tram Engine. That square shape stood out amongst the relatively samey engine bodies on Sodor, and the country twang George Carlin gave him was so dang funny! He was an instant favorite of mine, and I still like him even more than Thomas.

I wish I could help in the documentary in anyway, specifically around Shining Time Station and or Ringo joining the crew. Here's to more Steaming to Legacy! And, I would have a favourite Thomas character, but it's hard for me to choose without saying Thomas, although he's an obvious choice, I grew up with him and I watched him mature, I guess not many characters can be like that.

I could give any infomation about Shining Time Station regarding George Carlin wanting to be on the show, about Rick Sigglekows other shows he marketed in America after or around the time he was doing STS and if it would be important, how it saved Ringo from depression and drinking after John Lennons death. Just if in any way I'd love to help ^^
And yeah Christopher and Wilbert are right, it is very hard to choose favourites.

The history of Thomas is so fascinating
Wilbert Awdry is already in heaven. He is a great guy. Britt Allcroft got The Railway Series into Thomas and Friends in 1984 and she is 75 now.

Oh and as for my favorite character, well I have lots of favorites. But my top two would have to be Percy, because I like his young and fun personality. Almost like a brother to me. And Ryan, because he has that kindness feature towards a friend, like he did towards Thomas. (Plus I also loved Eddie voicing him. :3)
You know Liz, when I was away in Stratford, as we were going to Portsmouth, we had gone to the railway nearby and when we were in the shop, I saw a book that said Thomas The Tank Engine Man which was a biography book about Wilbert Awdry including his creation.

Glynn. He used to work on the Ffarquhar Branch Line and was Number One until Thomas came to take his place in 1915. Then a few years later, He and Percy found Glynn on an abandoned siding during winter time. Then when Glynn was restored, He now works at Ulfstead Castle with Stephen and Millie.

My most favourite engine in RWS/TTTE would be Edward. The reason why he's my favoutite because, in my opinion, he is overshadowed by others. Plus, he's a very good example to look up: teased and weak, but kind, wise, helpful and determined! And he may be old, but he has a very youthful face.

My favorite character is without a doubt Rusty. He's unlike most of the diesels in the whole Thomas franchise. He's a small orange narrow gauge diesel who is very kind. He saved Stepney from being scrapped. He also saved The Skarloey Railway. I also love his two-toned horn.

It's hard to choose a favorite Thomas character, but it has to be Donald and Douglas, because they're painted black like real engines and look very similar to each other like real engines.

As a kid, I liked Thomas the best, but I do like Lady as well...So many engines...
...I'll have to say...Duke the Lost Engine and by extentsion, Falcon, and Stuart and how he seemlessly connected all that to The Arlesdale Railway. Creating a bittersweet little section of Sodor.
I actually don't have a favourite character, because i like all of them. But if i had to choose it would be Duke. After the MSR closed in 1946, Duke, as we all know, was left in a shed and the first thing he said was: "Oh well, i'll go to sleep. It'll help to pass the time". We can clearly tell by this scene of "Grandpuff" that Duke was in such in an emotional pain, but he still had hope, which paid off over 2 decades later. And when he meets Sir Handel and Peter Sam for the first time in over 20 years, he complains about being woken up. In other words the relationship between them continued, despite being apart for years. That's why Duke always stood out for me.
Take this shed 17! This is a real thomas documentary!!!
