The kingdom management was why this is still my favorite pf1e AP, I know not everyone likes doing stuff like that, but building and naming my own city and watching it grow to eventually take over an entire hex was great.
You will LOVE the kingdom rules! I think they've gone through a VAST upgrade. EDIT: After studying them more I'd agree with @TayLysana that they're a minor upgrade, and more raw material for people to homebrew. I'm sure the community has made improvements to it as there are some glaring issues.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG they do appear to be upgraded, but I'd describe it as a minor upgrade from the way they appeared in the PF1e Ultimate Campaign book.

I played the video game first, now I'm running a Kingmaker game in 5e based on the original APs, with video game and my own content thrown in. A month or so after the game started I saw they were doing this remake. It's a great adventure whichever system you play, especially if you're a GM who likes to see a story emerge and give freedom to your players. Campaign should still be going when I get this, I'd love upated kingdom rules and see how they handle warfare
I didn't play this in PF1, but did play the CRPG from beginning to end and really enjoyed it (kingdom management aspects aside). I'm pretty hyped for this remastered AP.
I’m a relatively new convert to PF2e from D&D5e for largely the same reasons Fathpinders notes in their video about changing systems. This video has 100% clarified for me that I really want to get Kingmaker and utilize it in my homebrew world. Thanks for always making such valuable, clarifying content
I ran the 1e version; and about gearing up to start running the 2e one shortly. My first impressions were extremely positive, but its becoming more tempered as I dig into my prep. The camping rules in particular have me very worried, when they take a daily random encounter rate and use it as a n hourly/per watch rate, it feels likely to really bog things down, even with the sidebar advice to limit it to one random encounter per night. Feels like they thought some of the cooking bonuses/other camping activity bonuses are too good unless you offset by so many random encounters, and that feels like an unsatisfying balance to me. The new prologue looks very well adapted -- took some strengths from the computer game, but changed them around enough for the TTRPG medium. I haven't been as impressed with the other CRPG chapter conversions, nor with the the scope of improvements to the original 6 chapters -- felt like they could have gone further with the lessens learned/GM feedback over the decade. The companions all feel very well done (like the prologue) -- strong conversions of the CRPG content into a new medium that works well without pully the party away from their own things too often. And I really wish chapter 2 was its own book. You'll be cross referencing it, along with a story chapter a lot of the time and that would have been easier as two volumes.
Nice additional insights! I wasn't able to give more in-depth impressions in my vid. I do think the random encounter rate was too high when I glanced at them, but it's probably easily corrected. Hmm, not happy to hear they didn't incorporate some of the feedback/improvements... Would those, plus whatever you thought could've been done to improve the CRPG content adaptations, have increased the page count? I'm wondering if they thought this was already too massive?
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG I think its probably a combination of lack of time, intentional focused-scope, and page count impact. I think they over-promised/too many stretch goals for the resources they budgeted for it. So anything they didn't have to spend a lot of time on, they probably avoided retouching. Sure you have to touch the monsters/hazards/DCs. Sure you have to completely redo the kingdom management/warfare. But if they could avoid retouching individual encounters/arcs/flow within a chapter that saves them a lot of time; and I think that's why we see relatively little changes in the chapters themselves -- mainly updating the pre-chapter intros with a touch of updated guidance to GMs, some of the sidebars feel a little different, but I haven't done a side-by-side diff. It feels like the kingdom rules were the existing content that was most impacted by the lessens learned and I think its showing well, though there's still a lot of complexity to work though/understand. But the big wins I see there are a) settlements generally given their bonsues as item bonuses capped by their settlement size name -- this avoids some of the excessive/run-away stacking of bonuses in 1e. And the magic item economy exploits are completely shut down.
I had no idea this was coming, maybe I can finally get my table to take another stab at PF2e. The CRPG is absolutely amazing (once Owlcat got most of the bugs worked out)
As someone who has slowly been watching more PF2 content with the intention to start playing the system this adventure path looks like a lot of fun. And since it appears to work for both 5e and PF2 it might be a good jumping on point for some of my friends too
As a backer I already have my books and PDFs. I think the presentation is great, and I will definitely consider running this for my group after we finish Age of Ashes.
Age of Ashes is something I would like to run as well and it is one of the reasons why I started getting interested in doing more, then starting to look into converting things from PF1, THEN discovering that they WERE actually going to be doing this! I had heard rumors/talks that this MIGHT be happening at some point in the future
Can't wait to run this with my group. Ran the 1e version and had a great time- loads of homebrewed bits and pieces, and ultimately a great time over a couple years. Very excited to play it with the new system and to see this fab AP getting the fresh revamp.
Thanks Ronald, looking forward to part 2! I'm currently DMing a pf2e handmade conversion of the original kingmaker module: I couldn't wait for the official 10 years version to be published. We are currently halfway through book 2. Converting everything is a huge job, but I'm very happy with the result. The videos will be useful to understand what to do when the book gets out (I really need the kingdom and warfare rules...).
Kingmaker settlement rules on Archives of Nethys really helped a lot when I was world building a city for my homebrew and had questions the GM Core really didn't help with.
Technically you can NOW, just with the 3.X/PF1 edition rules, or a lot of work that would probably take longer to actually get done than just waiting for the books to come out!
I can't believe I hadn't considered switchable stables of characters as a selling point for this AP before. I know more than a few people who have more characters than they ever hope to run; this would be a great selling point to them playing Kingmaker.
This was fantastic! I've just started learning about PF2e (thanks OGL debacle), and wondering which PF CRPG I should play first. This seals the deal for Kingmaker. I can also see wanting this AP for all the new rules as I learn more about the TTRPG. Feels like there are a lot of new storytelling tools.
I loved the CRPG of this, and was excited to hear about its re-release as I want to try 2e and having some familiar things to hold onto will help me adjust. I'm not sure my group will like this, but I might get enough out of just reading the books to make it worthwhile.
I remember when we started playing this path a few years ago in the 6th or 7th session we encountered a group of 5 or 6 trolls nearly at sunset, which quiet the shock, because we were only level 3 with our group of 5 players. As we ran away the bard fails his skill check for steering the wagon. So the 3 players on the wagon go off in the darkness while no one of them can see in the dark and they are afraid of making light because of being spotted by the trolls. It took us 3 hours of real time( the GM hat us leaf the room 30min at a time) for our group to find back together.
I really like this in-depth review. I always liked the original adventures and the video game was excellent and is one of my most favorite crpgs of all time. It's good to learn that this version of the adventure is possibly exactly the kind of thing that I'm looking for in my next campaign.
@@JacksonOwex In 5e those legendary saves are absolutely desperately needed because the magic system is so poorly balanced. They're not ideal, but they're a lot better than a game where there's no fallback to keep a demon boss from being summarily banished if they get an unlucky roll.

I bought mine from the Paizo website directly but I know you can also get it on Amazon but it always seems to take a lot longer when ordering from there.
In Kingmaker 1st edition we leveled up to level 6 then switched to Slow exp... since we were doing a lot of ''side quest'' and personal questing not related to the main story...

when I backed the Kickstarter I wnated to run it for 5e but I think I will use the 5e monsters to convert them to dungeon crawl classics (5e is easy converted to osr unlike pathfinder monsters)
It funny. With the Video Game. I wanted more of the Kingmaker stuff and less of the leaving the kingdom to go kill stuff. I wanted the Kingdom management to be real kingdom management. Not 10% Kingmaker and 90% Generic Pathfinder game. I say generic pathfinder game as all pathfinder games. Have you traveling around the map. Killing enemies and leveling up. You know the whole kingdom management was the unique part of Kingmaker story. Yet that was so bad. Cause there was nothing to do. Just build buildings and put npc on task. There was like nothing else in the game. I could not build an army. I could not do celebration. I could not run a kingdom. Cause the pc game was focus on being just a standard Pathfinder game. Which at that point owlbear should have just done another game.
Once you've been in a battle with that many combatants you likely wouldn't suggest doing so ever again. I've played in a 5e game with thirteen friendlies and an equal number of enemies. We played an entire six hour session in a single combat and I had four rounds of action, which were pretty quick as I don't dawdle. So basically I had my turn, then waited an average of 90 minutes and had another turn. Not fun.
@@xczechr Doesnt matter. I was more asking what is stopping them from narrative point to not do it. As if you are acting realistic it would be best to take all
You can assign them roles in the Kingdom (there are 8 roles). Although by rule a leader only needs to attend to their duties 1 week per month, I think it's fair to say they are "covering the slack" when the PCs are out adventuring and leaving their Roles unattended 3 weeks/month. Also, since there is so much content the GM can play with time and have NPCs take care of certain locations/areas while "Group A" is elsewhere. Players can even be part of "Group B" with a 2nd PC (which I personally would be open to allowing)
I’ve wanted to run this since I heard about it in first edition, but haven’t bern able to get my group to try it. I’ve loved Kingdom building as an element in rpgs since I played Suikoden 2 in 1998-99.
We been playing 1st edition of this module but DM made mistake he wanted to try out Mythic and running the game as in the original heroes didn't win against the big baddie in the module and the gods couldn't let this happen and had the Inevitable rewind time and give us a divine spark to ensure we do.
Will this be available for purchase from paizo? Is it part of a subscription? I’m having a really hard time finding purchase options outside of Amazon or other 3rd party sellers.
I'm looking at buying this... you say the Companion book is "necessary." Is it completely necessary? $100 is already pricey, I'd rather not pop for another $40 if I don't have to.
If you look at it incredibly simply you're probably right, if you look at the ACTUAL product I would guess there is SO MUCH more to it than that! Though I doubt I will change your mind plus the price tag IS incredibly high!!! Was hoping to get this but now I don't think I will for quite awhile, if ever since things like this don't often seem to go on sale anymore! Wonder if it'll make it's way into a humble bundle!
Can someone clerify something for me? I am new to PF2e and want to run this path, but I'm not really sure what i need to buy. From what I understand the AP book and the Companion Guide are needed, but do those two things come with everything needed (Like a gm screen and I thought I saw something about having paper mini's as well).
The Companion Guide is needed if you want to have the sidequests and want to run the NPCs in combat, as their statblocks there. I'm not aware of other accessories tho, since I pretty much just run using Foundry VTT (for which a Kingmaker module is planned). For general accessories, it depends on what you need. Basic Liches has a what to buy vid that focuses some on physical accessories that mine doesn't
As someone who has never played pathfinder and only recently heavily invested in D&D (core set and expansion set), is Kingmaker plus the bestiary 5e right for me? Or is it better to just get the PF2e core book and Kingmaker and go with that, is the 5e conversion really good enough or am I going to have difficulty as a new D&D dm?
Because PF2 has similar "tight math" if you're comfortable making/plopping in creatures in 4e you should be fine. Every encounter is keyed in the book with its PF2 difficulty and level. The usual difficulty I find in converting between systems is the treasure outlay, which it would seem you'll want to re-approach from scratch
I wonder if it would be possible to run this campaign with 2 DM´s and 8 Players who explore diferent ereas the same time and share their informations afterwards.
That would be insanely hard to do, and would require a lot of work. Maybe betternto use the rules and create a New aventure designed specifically for that purpose
There would be a problem of sharing the spotlight. The story chapters and kingdom development highlight the importance of those doing them. But it IS possible, I suppose? Maybe 2 kingdoms developing side by side? Don't know though, a GM would need to thoroughly look at the material and see if it's possible.
I don't know much about 2e... How do DCs on skill checks compare to PF1? I'm wanting to use the anniversary edition for pf1 and the bestiary isn't a full conversion unfortunately.
Here's a conversion table that someone in the community made, hope this helps: www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/i4u2yl/i_made_a_complete_1e_to_2e_skill_dc_conversion/
They are technically optional. (The Companion Book also has the camping and weather rules, which are optional.) All the PF2 monsters are on Archives of Nethys. But if you want physical copies, they usually treat Bestiaries 1-3 as "core" and their adventures presume you have them.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Ah okay. I was just surprised I couldn't find a Preorder somewhere. was pretty disappointed that i missed the kickstarter way back when.
I am DMing KM for pf2, converting things on my own, and using the Ultimate Campaign rules for kingdom and warfare. We are at the end of module 3. The central plots are good, but a Lot of the quests make no sense as the group become rules of a big kingdom. Also there is almost no political intrigues and negotiations, which ia a bunmer. I feel the kingdom rules are breaking up as the game progresses, because all the kingdom tests became super easy and there is no tension. In resume, It is an interesting Campaign, with a lot of good oportunities for creative DMs with time to spare, but with a lot of problems on its subsystems. I hope they have fixed those issues and delivered a more polished product this time
I THINK the kingdom rules since they now reflect 2e design philosophy and math will not be as a "breakable" as the 1e rules. I can see why the designers didn't include political intrigues - I venture to guess that would be better homebrewed by tables. But there should have been more seeds of inspiration. (Maybe some NPC(s) manipulating events to try to usurp power woulda been cool)
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG yeah, I think they should provide a list of guilds, noble families, churches and describe their agenda and possible maneuvers. I think the real feeling of playing a medieval noble depends on juggling marriage proposals, guild protests and religion influences on your people
@Douglas baiense That would seriously be cool. If someone produced a "Game of Thrones" supplement to Kingmaker I think there'd be interest! EDIT: And IIRC the nation of Brevoy was tailor-made for this kind of intrigue!
Preorders and the landing pages are being withheld until all of the fundraiser backers get their copies. But the target release date is gonna be October 26th.
All Paizo published adventures for PF2 assume a party of four characters. But the encounter building system lets you easily scale encounters up and down depending on party size. It's generally accepted that you can run parties with 4-5 PCs fairly easily. 3 and 6 with some difficulty but it's not exceedingly hard.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Woulda been nice if they stated that in the book somewhere. Or if they did I missed it. I thought PF1 APs specified player counts, but I just looked and also don't see it... Maybe I'm just blind. :/
It was my favorite adventure of Pathfinder 1e... The videogame SUCKED HARD! It gutted all the history elements and gave a ilusion of choice with less choices than Baldur's Gate 1, and also 0 replayability. If they dont shoehorn the story like the videogame did, it can be a great re-release.
Looting ideas from it, and the map, for my next huge campaign. 🏕 Will also be inserting early D&D and AD&D adventures. Played it years ago at the table and on steam, so won't be giving more money to paizo. Sorry dudes, but I was there when you started censorship on Christians objecting to wokeness.

EDIT: Confirmed that this was announced by Paizo (both physical and PDF go on sale)
Did you chance Something on your audio settings? It sounds a loot better then previous videos. I like it :-)
I don't think so! If you have more specific observations let me know. If I got better I want to know how! =D
Currently running the 1e version. great stuff :)
when I backed the Kickstarter I wnated to run it for 5e but I think I will use the 5e monsters to convert them to dungeon crawl classics (5e is easy converted to osr unlike pathfinder monsters)
Kingmaker was the best AP from Pathfinder first edition
How do they handle of players just saying: why don't we take all 7 companions into battle (and basically march as 11)
Once you've been in a battle with that many combatants you likely wouldn't suggest doing so ever again.
Do you need the Core Rulebook for this book?
If you're running in PF2, technically no since all the rules are on Archives of Nethys. If you want to run it in 5e or PF1, you don't need it!
You had me a frognado.
thanks man, do you know if the bestiary is an essential buy, or can i run it with just the campaign book for pf2e?
Absolutely not needed if you're running it in PF2e
Great video!
Not a single look at the actual books? Nice overview though and keen to grab a copy!
I wonder how this compares to similar games with similar themes, like Forbidden Lands
Question, does the book advise how to deal with the passage of time? It seems like this would narratively atleast be a decade
Could run monster PCs? Gladiator robot, hemodynamic, commando construct with mannequin shell
It is not part of a subscription. It becomes available Oct. 26 to non-backers as confirmed by Paizo.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Thanks! I couldn’t find that info.
so, is the new 10th anniversary edition for all systems, or just PF2 or what?
I'm looking at buying this... you say the Companion book is "necessary." Is it completely necessary? $100 is already pricey, I'd rather not pop for another $40 if I don't have to.
This mostly sounds like they just ported the CRPG back to an AP
I'm full on P2E, but just out of curiosity, does this 5E conversion version somehow help the unbalanced nature of higher level 5E?
Would this be hard to convert to 4E?
Because PF2 has similar "tight math" if you're comfortable making/plopping in creatures in 4e you should be fine. Every encounter is keyed in the book with its PF2 difficulty and level. The usual difficulty I find in converting between systems is the treasure outlay, which it would seem you'll want to re-approach from scratch
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Thank you for your response!
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG that's awesome! Good find, thank you ❤️
Are they going to make a roll20-compatable version? if not how difficult will it be to port into a virtual tabletop?
There’s a Foundry release that has been announced
@@DJKaleMusic Thanks! Best news for this AP :)
Is the Companion Book "Mandatory" or "Optional"?
On the same note, do I need all 3 beastiaries or just the first?
They are technically optional. (The Companion Book also has the camping and weather rules, which are optional.)
All the PF2 monsters are on Archives of Nethys.
But if you want physical copies, they usually treat Bestiaries 1-3 as "core" and their adventures presume you have them.
So.. I've looked and cant find it. Where can I order these books.. I am hoping from paizo because discount/if i get pdfs I will know where they are.
Get's released to the masses Oct. 26 - they are making sure Kickstarter backers get it first.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Ah okay. I was just surprised I couldn't find a Preorder somewhere. was pretty disappointed that i missed the kickstarter way back when.
@@jmooreftw same. I am really bitter lol
I am still bitter I didn’t have the cash at the time to go all in on this kickstarter
I wanna play this so badlyyyy. But I really don't wanna dm it
Does anyone know where to find this? Can you preorder it?
I believe preorders were only open to kickstarter backers. It becomes available to everyone else on October 26th
Preorders and the landing pages are being withheld until all of the fundraiser backers get their copies. But the target release date is gonna be October 26th.
How many players is this version designed for?
All Paizo published adventures for PF2 assume a party of four characters. But the encounter building system lets you easily scale encounters up and down depending on party size. It's generally accepted that you can run parties with 4-5 PCs fairly easily. 3 and 6 with some difficulty but it's not exceedingly hard.
@@TheRulesLawyerRPG Woulda been nice if they stated that in the book somewhere. Or if they did I missed it. I thought PF1 APs specified player counts, but I just looked and also don't see it... Maybe I'm just blind. :/
Do you need to buy the adventure path and the beastiary to play this within 5e?
Yes
900th thumbs up from me
It was my favorite adventure of Pathfinder 1e...
Will also be inserting early D&D and AD&D adventures.
Played it years ago at the table and on steam, so won't be giving more money to paizo. Sorry dudes, but I was there when you started censorship on Christians objecting to wokeness.
