THAI STREET FOOD in Bangkok ♦ Chinatown on Yaowarat

  • Tonight we're taking you on a tasty journey through Bangkok's Chinatown on Yaowarat. Hope you come with an empty stomach because there is SO MUCH TO EAT! From various noodles to desserts, this street has got it all. Watch the video to see the munchies unfold :)
I've visited Chinatown BKK a couple times before during both the night and day. Today is my first time filming the area, so I'm excited to share the experience with you guys. I recommend stopping by on a weekend night when it's the most vibrant. There are things to enjoy during the daytime as well, such as the fresh market across Soi Yaowarat 11.
FYI: There are places selling Shark's Fin Soup. Please do not eat shark fin as "finned sharks are often thrown back into the ocean alive, where they do not die peacefully: unable to swim properly and bleeding profusely, they suffocate or die of blood loss... Every year, humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks. Removing sharks in large numbers can have ripple effects that throw entire ecosystems out of balance" (Smithsonian Institute). Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe 2019 is already here? Wow wow wee wow. Wishing you all a heartwarming 365 days ahead. There will be ups and downs, but we shall persevere and become stronger & wiser with each experience 💪😎
Note: This video was filmed in July 2018. I am currently in California and tucked away from the cold. Sure it doesn't snow here much, but I'm a creature that thrives in warmer conditions. How about you? 😝 Stay cozy and healthy!

"Bajang" is a transliteration of the Chinese word 肉粽 as pronounced in Hokkien (a Southern Chinese dialect). It is made with glutinous rice stuffed with meat, wrapped in those leaves and then boiled till the rice is cooked. It is traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Lunar calendar. We have it in Singapore and Malaysia too.

The Thai taco is a kind of dessert, called Ka nom Bueng ขนมเบื้อง . The original taco shell is made from mungbean flour to longer crispy and good odors, but some shops used wheat flour like a pancake. There are 2 stuffs : sweet and salt. The sweet stuff is a Protoguese style that made from eggs in syrup (Foi thong = ฝอยทอง) + resins (dried grapes) + coconut cream (some shops used dairy cream)
The salt stuff is made from shrimps + coconut flesh stir fried + limestone leaves that made specific texture and odors + coconut cream on the shell.
If you want to try authentic Thai dessert shell, the shop is located in Banglumpoo (บางลำภู) near Kao Sarn Road (famous tourist area - ถนนข้าวสาร ) by 5 minutes walking. There is always a long queues in front of the Thai taco dessert.

The ingredient that taints the soup pink is made using red fermented beancurd. As other viewers have commened, its a common condiment with yong tau fu. Yong tau fu is actually a dish that consists of a variety of soy products like soy beancurd and usually accompanied with fish paste products like fishcake and fishballs.
As for that jelly thingy, its actually cured cuttlefish.
Its a pity that you did not manage to try the peppery pigs stomach soup with flat curled up noodles(kway chap).
Great n awesome video, i love how you give us a total sensory experience when watching ur videos!

  • @wl88168

3:39 fried bean curd stuffed with fish cake.
fried bean curd without stuffing is GREAT in curry noodles. if it is whole and not yet cut into pieces, puncture or tear apart a small piece then let the insides soak up the curry then put in mouth and chew carefully taking care that the juices don't squirt everywhere.
other things that can be stuffed with fish cake:
chili, brinjal/eggplant,bitter gourd slices, tofu, bean curd sheets
all can be boiled or fried then served in soup sprinkled with scallions accompanied usually with chili and/or sweet dipping sauce
this dish is called "yong tau foo" (in Cantonese) = stuffed tofu

So glad to see you back in Bangkok. The pink sauce that turned the soup pink is a home made Thai miso. I know the color looked artificial but it's not and it's commonly used for these specialty soups. If you have a chance to eat it again, please add some pepper vinegar and a little sugar to it and it will rock your world. The carrot looking thing that you couldn't identify is part of an octopus and the brown bids is just fried garlic. Missing Thailand already.

6:15 similar to "appam balik" (Singapore/Malaysia) contains a sprinkling of crushed peanuts, sugar and a small dollop of margarine on a crepe (usually ~1cm thick soft crepe or much thinner crispy shell version). the absolute best ones i had were thinner than 1cm but thicker than a shell and still crispy on the outside with added corn and shaved coconut in addition to the standard peanuts-sugar-margarine; sadly, haven't seen this version sold anywhere anymore probably due to cost so have to make it myself at home.

    10:03 "kaya" = coconut jam....YUM! YUM!
made like you would custard in a double-boiler traditionally with:
eggs (a few more yolks than white)
    white/brown/palm sugar
coconut cream (as high cream content as you can get)
optional if available: pandanus leaves for fragrance
    keep stirring while cooking
done when coats back of ladle and forms distinct line when finger run across back of ladle
concoction is ruined and overcooked if you end up with scrambled eggs and/or coconut cream separates to oil
    optional addition(s) to finished product:
a dollop of butter for finishing gloss
a few almond slivers/sunflower seed for a little crunch
    keeps in fridge 1-2 weeks.
