  • How, despite “Roe v. Wade,” anti-abortion advocates successfully led campaigns to pass multiple state laws limiting access to abortion - with efforts in Mississippi as a blueprint. (From 2005)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
In the summer of 2005, more than 30 years after Roe v. Wade established access to abortion services as a fundamental right, a FRONTLINE documentary team spent two months traveling across the South, where states had been particularly active in passing restrictions on abortion.
"The assault on abortion rights is very clever. It's very smart. And we are losing," one anonymous abortion provider said in the resulting documentary.
In interviews with abortion providers and their patients, with staff at an anti-abortion pregnancy counseling center, and with key legal strategists on both sides of the national debate, producer Raney Aronson-Rath documented the success of the anti-abortion movement and the growing number of states with regulations limiting access to abortion. The documentary traced that success back to how anti-abortion advocates seized on Planned Parenthood v. Casey - the 1992 Supreme Court decision that upheld Roe v. Wade but changed the standard by which abortion laws were judged.
“Their tactics changed,” Betty Thompson, former director of the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Mississippi’s last abortion clinic, told FRONTLINE of the anti-abortion movement’s response to Casey. “They began to see: ‘We have political clout now. And so while we have this power, we’re going to chip away at Roe v. Wade until the law is going to be on the books, but nobody will be able to access the service.'”
The documentary explored how Mississippi was a model for the anti-abortion movement’s efforts.
“Mississippi has an impressive track record,” Clarke Forsythe, senior legal counsel for Americans United for Life, told FRONTLINE. “Our goal is to see that other states pass the type of legislation that Mississippi has passed over the past decade, and we see a lot of legislative activity.”

If your “just a clump” idea has to do with the inability of a pre born human to reason, or contemplate his or her existence, or communicate then I’d point out that a six month old infant can’t do any of those things either. Nor could a three year old. Etc. Shall I assume that you’d be fine with a mother putting an unwanted infant to death because he or she cannot reason, or use language, or do anything to care for himself/herself? If your position has something to do with appearances I’d point out that there are plenty of humans whose faces or bodies don’t look at all typical. But they’re the same ones yelling about public assistance and what their tax dollars are going towards. Make it make sense.

I was made pregnant at the age of 14, by a sexually abusive Step Father who began his abuse when I was 6 , after he married my Mother. It was before there were abortion clinics in Canada, and women were dying from kitchen table abortions and do it yourself coat hanger abortions in both Canada and the USA.
I was sent to a home for unwed Mothers halfway across the country from home for my 2nd and 3rd trimesters. There were girls as young as 12 there. I gave birth at the hospital across the street from the home, and sent back to the home the next day.
For 10 days I fed my Son with a bottle, and that forms a bond…but I knew I had to give him up. I carried him into court, heard myself defined as an unwilling Mother, and a strange woman took him from me and left the court. I was unable to have another child later in my life because I was sterilized while they were “caring” for me.
The night I returned home, my Stepfather was back in my room, telling me he would get me fitted for a birth control device. I left home, and was emancipated at 15 because I threatened to tell the truth if he didn’t make it happen. It took years to emotionally heal and stop harming myself.
That is in America’s past…and it looks like you are heading for it again. Shame on those men who rally for pro-life, but have no problem putting a baby in there but take no responsibility thereafter. They have no voice in this issue. The women should just know better.🖤🇨🇦

You can't say you care about children who suffer when your ok with children being killed in the womb. Especially when many people who were in foster care now live a decent and even a successful life. We don't have the right take away someone's future when we don't know for a fact they will live a miserable life. The unborn are considered not a person when infact science tells us it is a human being. So born humans can decide which humans are not a person and who has more value because it was made into law. Is that not the same belief when a black person wasn't consired a person because society decided they were less human and did not have the same value as a white person. Society again decided another group of humans are not considered a person. We repeated history living in a modern day silent holocaust. It's really not about women's rights. That's a fake cover up to what's the real motive behind it. Fact, Margret Sanger created plannedparenthood who was a eugenicist and hated black black people. What race is getting the most abortions? Black people. Abortion is the biggest genocide on the black race. This is the direct reason of why black people now make up less of the population along with, yes, the crack epidemic. Have you ever thought about how there were more black people than white during slavery before plannedparenthood was introduced? And now, very subtly and under the radar since abortion has been allowed, black people are now the minority. Unborn human babies not being considered a person is right now the biggest basic human rights issue. That fetus is a human fetus which means a young human. Humans cannot procreate animals. Would it still be ok if we could see the human fetus that has a tiny body with all it's limbs out front of us and crush it? We treat animals and plants with more value than the unborn. Just cause it's small and can't speak it's ok to crush it like a bug? No. Because it's not just a bug it's a human being.

The current argument in favor of striking Roe v Wade down indeed hinges upon modern science; the cameras, as they’re finding, see a whole lot clearer these days, yes?
And how is it that it’s a so-called classic breech of church and state?
To be clear, separation of church and state has nothing to do with keeping religious thought out of the government, but restricting the government from showing favor; assigning this religion or that to the people.

When an abortion is performed within the allotted time as required by existing laws, the zygote is about the size of a pea and has less neurons than a common house fly.
So, if you’ve ever swatted a fly in your lifetime you’ve visited as much suffering on the world as the properly performed abortion.

Just because the " federal law " was created doesn't mean it was GOOD. Roe was not based in good law. Are the some of the pro lifers equally nuts. Yes. The federal govt shouldn't have any decision related to your body. The states will uphold or make their own laws. Should the STATE have a say in your body? Also no, but I will take the state over fed. There are a lot of people who DO adopt and foster kids and yes there are many in the system but you're inferring they are there because they were forced to be birthed...children are taken from parents every day, parents DIE in accidents everyday with no family left to care for them, parents GO TO JAIL...SOMETIMES kids are removed from the he illegitimately. Roe was bad law. Read various positions on it whether for or against and it will make sense.

This is what one gets when the leader of a country is elected directly. Personality over substance. Ideology over pragmatism. And those personalities have so much lasting influence over the direction of the country. The parliamentary system is by no means perfect but it tends to reduce the chance of ending up with populist dogmatic leaders. Whatever your political stripe is, take a look at the most extreme elected national leaders and then check to see how many are Presidents vs Prime Ministers. Unfortunately in the USA, the cause is embedded right into the foundation of the system.

@@TesserId I'm not sure who your are referring to as "they." Or what you mean by taking back the system. Not a criticism of your comment, just I don't understand it. Let my comment not be misinterpreted. I am not speaking of any particular people or that there is some great conspiracy going on. But rather, simply that directly electing a person to an office that wields so much power can have unintended and sometimes detrimental results when populism and the politics polarization tend to win out. Imagine if you will, eliminating the Executive Branch and having the leader of the House of Representatives (not any particular person, just whoever that may be at any time) as the leader of the federal government. Republican or Democrat, neither one is likely to have as their House leader one that is on the extreme end of their political spectrum. Also, my comment is not a criticism of the United States, which is chock full of wonderful, talented and benevolent people. A leader in the world in many wonderful ways. But unfortunately a country that has so needlessly become incredibly politically polarized recently. The only people that benefit from this are the politicians and despotic nations that benefit from a divided and thus weakened United Sates. That is a very sad thing to witness as it weakens the state of liberal democracy worldwide. There is no doubt that the world's autocracies are taking full advantage of this and expanding their influence and economic power globally. How does this relate to Rowe vs Wade decision, the subject of this documentary? That is for the great people of the United States to decide, within the system they have democratically decided to uphold.

There is a lot more to address if you want to end abortion, however poverty IS the number one issue unrelentingly in the face of women faced with this moral battle. I am a Christian, and I do fear it is too acceptable to abort, however, if this is all you care about then you don't really care. There is so much more at play. This world sets us up to sin, condemn and turn a blind eye. It upholds class divisions and all encompassing moral dilemmas, many of which well-to-do people do not face as frequently, if at all.

*You know, I had my son at 23 wks gestation, so I have positive and negative feelings about abortion depending on how far along someone is, but also the circumstance! But I also feel like this is a personal choice that shouldn't be denied! How can a state completely banish abortions??? What about situations with serious health issues, incest, or even a rape victim getting pregnant??? We live in a country where we're supposed have have "freedom of choice"! And things like this, I don't think it should take a mass vote! Now, I personally don't feel right about women getting an abortion bc of an "accident" .... but then again, I also think we should have a choice! Adoption is a beautiful thing and I do wish this would be chosen over abortion but... what if a women is suicidal over simmering like this as well??! So, overall, I strongly believe it should be a choice available everywhere!!! A women choosing abortion gets more judgement then a women addicted to drugs while pregnant... and that's just sad!!*

To those who are in agreement with the court, who are in favor of restricting access to abortion. The vast majority of you don't care at all about babies. If you did, you would be in favor of healthcare for everyone, not just for the children of people who can afford it. If you cared about babies, you would be more concerned with birth control and sex education so that unwanted pregnancies didn't happen in the first place.
But you're not. The overwhelming majority of you aren't concerned at all about babies. You're concerned with punishing women. You believe that you have the right to decide what a woman can and can't do and it threatens you if she decides to do something different from what you believe to be correct.
People will have sex, no matter what you say or believe. That is what people have always done and will always do. If you really cared about babies, you would want to prevent births where the parents can't take care of the baby. But you don't, you don't want to fund sex education, birth control or healthcare. You don't want to take care of the babies once they're born. All you care about is the ability to penalize women for the temerity of having sex. That is your goal.
I am trying for patience and tolerance but I admit that I am filled with disgust and anger for the people who are trying to make the lives of poor women more difficult.
Middle class women, wealthy women will always have the ability to go to a different state and end their pregnancy. This will affect women who can least afford it. And these babies, the babies you will force on these women, what kind of lives will they have? You don't care about the babies' lives, your deep Christian concern ends when the baby exits the woman's womb. The hypocrisy is stunning.
We don't have healthcare for all in this country, almost every other country has it but we don't. We don't offer sex education, contraception, we talk about this being the greatest country in the world, and it once was, but no longer.
Don't be a hypocrite. If you claim to care about the lives of babies, care about them once they're born.

There are so many bigger problems in this country than abortion. But, abortion is an easy concept to grasp for both-sides and it unifies people together under a clear and simple mission: end abortion. Fighting poverty or inequality or environmental issues are so much more nuanced and complicated that it's much harder to unify and galvanize people. So in short, the black and white nature of abortion itself feeds into the endless fight and cycle.

Not the same, because slaves were generally not killed outright, at least they had utilitarian value in the eyes of their masters.
However, both slaves and pre-born babies were viewed as not being human persons, thus not worthy of Constitutional rights. Both were considered property of the owners - disposable.
Also, another common link is that abortion was popularized in US by Margaret Sanger as an extension of eugenics, expressly in order to limit the growth of the black population since she viewed them as inferior species (about 90 years ago).

The problem with "Right To Life" is that the people at the top of those organizations have the facts and know the statistics, and they know that the best outcomes for women and girls and their pregnancies occur in countries where abortions are safe, legal, and supported.
This isn't spin; it's plain fact.
If you care about "unborn babies," you have the responsibility to know what is the effect of the outcome you are achieving. You have the responsibility to know ALL the facts, not just the ones that make you feel good about yourself.
The unassailable fact is that in countries where abortion has acceptance; there is good education; there are legitimate choices presented: there are significantly fewer abortions sought and outcomes for babies that are born are significantly better.
"Prolife" isn't about babies. It's about power. It's about taking power away from women and giving it to a small elite, the small elite who have already convinced thousands of sympathetic, tenderhearted, sincere, ignorant people to go out and harass and kill for them.
    Plain facts.
