Quiet luxury is having more leg room on a long flight, privacy on vacation, comfortable clothes in fabric that don't pull, pill, or itch, having private viewings of beautiful art/shows... Just being able to enjoy life in a slower more comfortable way with just those perfect touches of luxury; that superior tea blend, that perfume that makes you swoon, truffle oil, silk pj's... Great subject matter Michele!
I always thought of my friend who wore her Gucci loafers in such a way that they were scuffed and well worn, they seemed like a quiet luxury because she just wore them. She didn't save them for special occasions, stored in an acrylic shoe box on display. She ENJOYED the luxury, and the timeless look of the loafer with everything she wore.
Quiet luxury is about not having to stress about making sure Other people know you have money. Just do you because you know the quality and what you have in the bank. No one else needs to know. Just enjoy! - It's elegance, a lifestyle and an entire vibe. I have always thought your style to be quieter luxury. Very stylish without being tacky. I love your style! 💖
I'm considered lower middle class and all my clothes come from Walmart, I work 12 hour shifts at toyota, that said I have no business watching this video but my goal is to have nice clothes. I love your style, I have been looking into lilly silk and even if it takes a year to get one piece at a time that's what I want to do. ❤ you
Go for it! I grew up in a wealthy family but everything was lost. I had a well paid job I paid for a mortgage and supported my family... I didn't habe much money left, but therefore invested in long lasting pieces, often second hand... Now almost 20yrs later many pieces are still in my closet, many of these brands offer aftercare services so the pieces last long. I haven't bought anything now the last 2yrs despite some pair of loafers as mine after 14yrs were distressed... My wardrobe is perfect, from morning to night, i feel good in every piece and don't need to think to much about it...
I inherited a beautiful strand of pearls from a relative. I wear these beauties with my H&M blouses, and this is my quiet luxury. Only I know the story behind them.
Maybe not in the “luxury” category, but I have always loved the timeliness and classic of Ralph Lauren and Jones NY. Clean, basic, non-trendy looks. I owned a lot of both in the 90s when I worked a corporate job. Also had some RL casual clothing. Will always take me to one of my happy places in life.
Carolyn Bessette Kennedy started this trend long before Influencers and Instagram existed. In addition to the points you made about why quiet luxury is at the forefront right now - there's also this notion of every blogger or influencer being seen with a certain bag or clothing item making me NOT want it. Even Hermes. When everyone (whether they truly have a sense of style or not) is wearing a mini kelly it dilutes the value, makes me not want it because having the latest trendy logo'd thing isn't appealing to me anymore. I loved this video, and your take on this topic. I can't think of another content creator who could bring this info to us better!
Quiet luxury has been here forever - and it is not really brands but what one choses - you can wear a classic dolce & Gabbana trouser suit or Versace coat and still be on the realm of quiet … it is for me more about the choice of fabrics, colours and cut …
Quiet luxury is the ability to donate money and provide assistance anonymously without seeking recognition or acknowledgement. Sending your PJ out to help someone in need, because that is the right thing to do. "Old money" as it use to be stated. As if, you don't need to display to the world what you have, because you already have it! You then simply smile to yourself. Others find out, once they get to know you and that is quiet luxury. You don't need to scream look at me with any designer logos.
I've always taken quiet luxury to mean lifestyle choices (e.g. shopping at Whole Foods, getting a flower delivery subscription service, paying extra for faster shipping), particularly those that reduce stress (e.g. taking a Lyft instead of waiting for the subway). I also take quiet luxury to mean shopping at Sephora when there isn't a sale or promotion happening, haha.
Grew up kinda upper middle class and my parents once they realized I was into fashion as a kid always, always, ALWAYS stressed to me not to dress in a way that made it obvious AND to choose quality & longevity whenever feasible. It’s stuck with me and has really helped to inform my own personal style & aesthetic. So I’ve been bemused to see “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth” trending because, as you’ve said, these have long been around and it’s easy enough to spot when you pay enough attention. I think Bottega (the leather version of “Is it cake?”), Prada (sans the more obviously logo’d pieces, such as the latest FW23 collection), The Row, and Bianca Saunders, Armani, Peter Do, etc., are prime examples of luxury brands who embody “quiet luxury.” And napping midday has been my current quiet luxury obsession, especially now that the weather is getting warmer😌
I think as of today brands like Hermes, Gucci, Lui Vitton etc. are no way quite luxury. This brands are primarily commercial, very very commercial, they target masses, and by that their products must be easy recognizable, which stops them Fromm being "quiet".
They are can be based on the item especially Hermes most of their bags most people would not recognize. Also the horse bit is pretty quite if you don’t know Gucci
Hermes bags used to be “quiet luxury” pre social media. Everything is quiet until a million people start screaming about it. But all luxury brands have quiet pieces and flaming loud pieces. We buy luxury brands for all the reasons you’ve stated, sometimes we want to scream it and other times we want to hide it.
I think that you should come and visit Turin (Italy) because you’ll find quite a good example of quiet luxury. The way wealthy people dress is subdued and the less you show, the more you own. In the centre and Quadrilatero you would find little boutiques with unknown brands but very expensive prices. In Crocetta is more the old money/bourgeois style.
You make a good point when you say that quiet luxury is not just about fashion. It is interesting how we have gone from fast fashion to quiet luxury. This is how I see it: Many people are suffering in this economy, and some of us are okay so some of us don't want to look like we are privileged. For me it is not about knowing but just fitting in.
So “quiet luxury” is the “old money aesthetic”. I tend to have strong opinions and nothing I’m saying is directed at anyone personally.I enjoy your videos. I don’t think there is anything wrong with buying quality items that will last longer as opposed to getting sucked into fast fashion. It’s great to shop smarter and wiser. You don’t need to break the bank to this. I live in Southern Appalachia, a place where sewing factories once thrived. Every woman I know that worked for various apparel companies constantly told me to look for quality, check the stitching, check the fabric, try to avoid synthetics, etc… Spend your money on something that will last. It’s something more people should do. It’s nice to buy luxury and treat yourself. I know it’s a matter of personal taste but I’ve never cared for anything with logos all over it. In my personal opinion most logo heavy items look tacky. Buying a $700 hat, a $1500 t-shirt that looks like Haynes or a tank top with an expensive triangle on it would never cross my mind for the same reason. It’s just as gaudy and it’s financially irresponsible. I think aesthetic trends on social media are fairly annoying. It’s primarily teenagers obsessed with finding one personality/identity to wear until they are bored with it. I remember the teen exploration days well but do not understand why so many seem set on boxing themselves in and figuring out everything now, now, now. It’s not going to happen. I digress. Videos on how to look old money (how to dress classy, dress the French way) can be gross. Some just have good tips for people when it comes to particular outfits but they can easily go overboard. The conversations I’ve seen on quiet luxury have already fallen off the boat. A boat that don’t actually exist. Quiet luxury doesn’t really exist. A secret club only exists if you believe the poors don’t know quality. It’s fair to say that classism is involved. There is a good chance that anything related to old money will have several isms baked in.
I am not one to even financially comment about quiet luxury, but I’ll throw my literal two cents in😂 …fragrance. Quality perfume speaks volumes for me. Luxe skincare. Luxe laundry care. Fabrics such as cashmere, linen and organic cotton. I love nili lotan for casual comfort, (if I have to name a brand) but I don’t seek out specific brands, unless it’s in my sunglasses. (Celine, maxmara) I am a middle class jeans and tee girl, but I try to find quality pieces and I usually shop second hand for the benefit of my wallet and the environment 😊…..loved this video. Thank you.
@@LotusesGalaxyOcean it really is. I’ve found very high end items for a fraction of the price and I’m saving things from a landfill so it’s a win win for sure. I certainly couldn’t afford to have a closet full otherwise. I don’t do fast fashion unless it’s basic white tees that I work around the house in and replace once stained and torn (usually annually)
Love your take on this hot topic! For me quiet luxury is wearing the best fabrics (cashmere, cotton, silk or a mixture of these three). No synthetic fabrics. This extends to buying stuff that many people will consider fripperies: Trudon candles, Aesop handwash, Aromatherapy Associates pillow mist, regular massages. I don't agree that simply wearing beige is quiet luxury. Also, it has something to do with a particular bearing, how people carry themselves. Anyone can wear what Gwyneth is wearing but it will not be the same vibe.
I agree and ironically in reality it isn’t about consumption necessarily. A great chef covets cooking knives. Someone else might might their own beeswax wood-wick candles because they love unique scents not typically available commercially. It is about quality and ease.
My quiet luxury has always been related to travel. I travel at least business class and when I'm going to be staying in a hotel (even though I'm very picky about hotels) I take my own pillow and some of my beautiful silk pillowcases. I also carry an extra suitacse for my mattress topper. I like to sleep well 😂
Quiet Luxury is for the Nouveau Riche who want to be distanced from New Money but can't be Old Money😆 But I personally feel that Quiet Luxury is supporting craftspeople who pour their heart and soul into their creations. These are people who have perfected their skills and create items that are meant to last. Importantly, you don't talk about it because there is no need to.
The new trend for snobs to goble on. Now we are heading towards utterly overpriced simple cotton shirts and linen pants. Help! 😅😅😅😅 Move over, Louboutin,it's time for 1000E pantoufles.
I think that Hermès Kelly or Birkin bags are definitely not quiet luxury anymore thanks to the kardashian/jenner family and all the influencers showcasing them everywhere.
I have been in Property Management for over 20 years and have worked with wealthy clients mostly. I was complimented on a Coach bag one day by the daughter of a Board Member. Her Mom told her ‘Honey, we don’t advertise for any company without being paid for it.’ Her daughter and I had a great laugh later on but, that day I understood why nothing they wear has logos. I guess I will always be loud with my Coach bags. Lol 😂🤷♀️😜 I always purchase quality work clothes but, I look for sales. I have nice jackets that I have had since 2010, still wearing them to this day. This is an interesting topic, I never knew it had a name.
That is a very interesting statement: "...we don't advertise for any company without being paid for it." I feel like seems to be like one big commercial lately.
For me, I don't think quiet luxury is all about 'if you know, you know club', but rather wearing stuff with the most comfortable and enduring fabrics that you can enjoy and that can be worn so many times without losing their characteristics. Not to silently expose your wealth to the world. And also being able to pick beautiful garments even from the cheapest store, combine it with your silent luxury items in a beautiful way. As it is silent, the outfit speaks of its timeless beauty and lets you shine on your own.
Quiet luxury reads to me as a form of classism and elitism. Once before the LV brand was upper echelon, something to aspire to have. It’s become available to more people. So, for people to further set them self apart, a new tier has to be added. So now we have quiet luxury.
I see this concept of quiet luxury as I look at the tech industry and so many people miss it. From the bespoke t shirts that fall just so to the jeans that are perfectly tailored to pool a little at the ankle then break perfectly at the foot. And finally the logo less hat. They're everywhere among tech industry types. And far too many miss just how much that understated but intentional "average Joe" look costs.
As a former designer who only dealt in luxury textiles. Quiet luxury is having bespoke clothing..which most people know very little about. Most of my clothing is bespoke. That’s quiet luxury. I do love Jil Sanders, one of my favorite brands..been wearing JS for years
My fave quiet luxury piece is my ultra classic, absolutely timeless vintage Furla bag. It comes out for interviews and I always get compliments. I love that bag and I feel just a little more confident when I carry it.
My favorite quiet luxury is my “stealth silk” clothing. I love matte or knitted silk fabrics, because unlike the shiny silk charmeuse satin, no one knows that I’m wearing silk in these and they look more casual. I got really tired of people saying things like “what are you, made of money?, you’re wearing silk!” when I wore “obvious silk”. Stealth silk is my secret luxury, I only wear it because of its sublime comfort and breathability for my hyper-sensitive skin. I love soft fabrics, but can’t wear polyester (allergic), so silk it is. I can comfortably wear rayon, so that’s a great second choice, it has many silk-like properties, but the quality has to be a good-quality, thicker version to look good and perform well. Again, no acrylic (allergic), cashmere instead. A silk-knit turtleneck under a cashmere sweater is the ultimate winter comfort. Allergies to synthetic fibers (plastics) are not that rare, if you get a itchy rash that resembles the fabric texture when wearing them, that’s the clue.
Yes! I love a matte silk. Growing up in China, the shiny silk is mostly for under layers. Over the years because of stress and the American diet I am so so sensitive to anything synthetic, my fav silk pieces are all stolen from my mom’s closet she bought years and years ago.
My go to quiet luxury moment is a spray of my Le Labo Another 13. Whether I’m alone at home in my lounge wear, or nipping out to do errands, a quick spray just lifts my mood and puts a smile on my face 🦋
Quiet luxury to me is self care. Sleeping in with beakfast in bed ,catching up on subscription magazines or books. A day of pampering with a massage, a quiet walk alone in nature listening to the sounds of birds and other peaceful elements of nature. Being grateful for all the blessings we sometimes take for granted....Life
I’ve started following content creators that analyze the quality of luxury brands and with handbags it’s turned me off of some brands like Chanel but made me appreciate others more- like Coach.
As a creative person who adores fine materials-whether oil paints, textiles, metals, woods-all I can say is how happy I feel that I can also design and sew garments. For me, quiet luxury is so special when it’s handmade by me! xx 🧡🌷 Loved hearing your perspective today!
Have never heard of "quiet luxury" before and just saw one other video before yours about it. I'm not surprised that the trend is going this way. I think we will see lots of it in the Fall and Winter. I do like your idea of quiet luxury items like your laundry detergent and your make up removers. We all like one or two little things that make us happy and feel good. I think that this is just all classic wardrobe. It has always been in style. I think we all have at least one item in our closet that is fine quality. We know it and it makes us feel good to wear it and we look good wearing it.
I think this is a reaction against the incessant "cheapness" of fast fashion. We've been inundated with so many hauls of stuff that falls apart when you blink at it and is so micro-trendy that it looks dates within 3 months. Along with the irritation of things being so transient, we're also becoming more and more aware of the ecological impacts of fast fashion. People are looking for "investment" pieces to get away of the damaging (long-term expensive) cycle. And the buy higher quality for long-term economy and ecology feeds directly to the quiet luxury precepts.
Blume tea blends, their matcha specifically, as my morning latte. Investment everyday earrings that elevate any outfit. The auric lip balm. I really vibe with this concept. I don’t generally consider myself a luxury girlie, but I definitely can see how this philosophy can be applied to any budget or style philosophy
Great video! Quiet luxury is all of the things you mentioned and I would add that it is staying in a more spacious hotel and suite when traveling, paying for extra services to make life easier or more enjoyable. As I've gotten older, I am willing to pay for these items.
Only you could have described ‘quiet luxury’ and…..you did it SO your way. You certainly are a unique human. I think you were put here on earth destined to be ‘special’ which you are…….no BS. Excellent video, perfectly put. Elaine
My quiet luxury is no longer working full time hours. I work as a contractor for the same company but work Tuesday - Thursday now. It feels wonderful to do something around the house or go outside and enjoy the sun in between appointments.
Luxury makeup is mostly quiet luxury. You spend money on the beautiful packaging and you mostly use it alone. Not many will be able to tell the difference when the makeup is applied. The only exception maybe lipstick that you may bring with you.
I love quiet luxury. I think it says you are comfortable in your own skin and don’t care what other think. I’ve been buying quality over quantity for years. My best purchase is a wool Calvin Klein coat that I’ve had for 15 years. I know that I will have my Levi 501’s for years to come. As I get older and older, I care less and less what other people think of me.
LOVED this conversation. I think w brands like LV and Hermès, with regards to their bags, the bag was to really look _worn_ and used - like Mary Kate Olsen’s Hermès Kelly bag. Yes, it’s an identifiable bag and loud (like LV’s monogram bags), but it’s been used with a degree of carelessness that most ppl without stealth wealth simply cannot do because they’re too preoccupied with making sure their bags don’t get nicked by keeping them in their dust bags.
Translated into a person, Neelam Ahooja represents quiet luxury to me. Being inspired by her style, I've been transforming my wardrobe ever since I discovered her. Especially the timeless and sustainable aspects of her style I love so much.
Love this video Michele. I definitely like to spend my money on less quantity and more quality! This includes skincare and makeup, which I think are a quiet luxury for sure!
Wow, great video and I’m so glad I discovered your channel! I was watching a Risa Does Makeup video this morning and she mentioned a beautiful blush that one of her fellow TH-cam influencers was wearing by Lancôme who also lives in Vegas but she said a “Michelle Wong” but I’m pretty sure it was you as you said you live in Vegas, too! It really doesn’t matter as I loved what you had to say on quiet luxury and I wholeheartedly agree!!👍🏻👍🏻
I have a Lindy bag in clemence leather and no one can immediately identify it as Hermes...my woven Bottega Veneta tote is 30 years old as are my walking oxfords. My cherry red Max Mara coat was purchased in 1980. Buying the best I can buy has worked for me.
This was an interesting video. I love luxury, and have several items (clothing wise)that would fall into that category. Yet, am so far at the other end of the scale, in my every day life- definitely more eclectic classy gothy budget..lol. I like to make sure, like you it can stand the test of quality/fashion time. Hermes...if it is recognized right away...I would say it isn't quiet luxury, Its all subjective, eh? My quite luxury is perfume, sheets and towels. I know..so different, yet my towels have lasted a long time...and my sheets make me feel great. The perfume speaks for itself. My up and coming luxury...that laundry detergent! Thank you Michele!
🥰 thank you so much for collabing with me! Okay - now I need a pillow mist 😄 sounds amazing. I love how analytical you are - I thoroughly enjoyed listening. I’m ready for you to launch a podcast 🎉😃 I’ll be your first subscriber 🙌🏼
Guerlain has different mists for different things for many years now. You should try them. They're really nice. My favorite is Eau de Cashmere (which is a mist for the pullovers, cashmeres, etc.). They have a pillow mist named Eau de lit, one for the bath named Eau de bain, one for lingerie/underwears called Eau de lingerie, and they also have Eau de Coton xoxo
If you are comfortable in it --then the item was a great purchase. I have purchased flats from Walmart which are classic, and I have worn daily every summer for more than 3 years. I still get compliments on the sandals. Also the construction, they have held up better that the name brand luxury sandals ( which I baby even when I wear them). Wear your dress with pride!
I have a cupboard filled to the brim in my laundry room with the Laundress laundry products. I buy in bulk so hopefully I can survive until they relaunch the website ( they had a problem with some contamination of certain products) but I had absolutely no problem with their products. Their 723 laundry detergent and the one that smells like rose from a fancy perfumerie were absolutely glorious. Also the Jo Malone hand wash in Basil Neroli. Omg it smells so good! And crème de La mer face cream. ❤
I share your love of scented products - I love nice hand soaps. One of my most favorite things I did for myself a few years ago is to only buy nice undergarments and socks. That is my quiet luxury - nothing feels better then good quality socks, underwear etc. It just feels good against the skin and sets a tone in a way as you then get dressed.
Yes on the Hermes question I believe it’s very much quiet luxury. Ralph Lauren is very much American quiet luxury, Celine, MaxMara, and Loewe as well. Being a man who wears men’s and women’s clothes I also wear a lot of Brooks Brothers, but of all quiet luxury Ralph Lauren and Hermes are my faves for sure. With my bags I love my Hermes bags and love love my Ralph Lauren soft Ricky and RL50 bags.
@@ShweMyaukMyauk lol not Polo, I meant the higher quality lines like the soft Ricky bag and rl50 bags and his higher end clothing such as purple label there a many lines under the brand.
@@birkinboy3976I bought a purple label wool blazer, and now I can’t stand looking at fast fashion + Not so fast fashion labels take on blazers, especially all those polyester lining….You are right. Ralph Lauren Collection pieces always feel so nice. People only think of the Polo line lol. Not that they are bad. I will still pick Polo items over all the fast fashion items I see in the stores.
@@harriet.z exactly, in Europe Ralph Lauren is often considered the ultimate American luxury brand. I have Hermes Chanel Louis Vuitton etc and I put my Ralph Lauren pieces right up there with them.
My luxury purchases are the bath products from Clarins or a derm line that just makes you feel beautiful and i love the Aromatherapy aspects of it. It’s like a Spa feel….
I think Hermes is still quiet luxury especially their clothing. You have to really know the brand to look at a "plain" coat or blazer to know its Hermes, but you can tell it is made of high quality fabrics. I agree with you on quiet luxury as little ways to make you feel special. It is very personal.
Michelle, I do prefer the natural sound of your previous videos. This audio sounds like audio/muffled/filtered. You have a wonderful voice and people have commented on it many times. We love you for you.
@@TheMicheleWang No, this is so much better! Your recent vlog-style videos (anything where you aren't putting on makeup) are so hard to listen to...literally: the sound is so quiet and you sound tinny. I really appreciate the use of the mic here.
Quiet luxury and notoriety are two different things. Hermes is definitely quiet luxury that everyone knows about because it has been so popular for so long. If quiet luxury is about not being loud with logos then Hermes is exactly that.
A great way to shop QL is on the resale market. I LOVE Ralph Lauren and I get his Purple Label for the cost of Polo. I also got a Max Mara coat for $200 10 years ago and it’s still going strong.
I find quiet luxury to be a far-better conversation starter: "I love your (insert clothing item), where did you get it?" - luxury brand names/logos all over eliminates curiosity and possibly creates the illusion of "look at me look me!" and people don't tend to comment.
Loved your ideas on quiet luxury. And yes I do think Hermes belongs on the list. Everything they do is quiet luxury unless it isn’t, for example a bright colored Kelly vs a neutral tone. But they have so many different departments and in each department you will find many examples of quiet luxury. Long before Loro Piano and Brunello Cucinelli the was Hermes. Hermes is also steeped with a rich history in leather and silks. I have always had a deep appreciation for quiet luxury so I was very happy to hear what you had to say. Very interesting!
Thank you for this! I really love hearing your take on luxury - that it’s about quality and not just status. The Shiseido cottons are my special little splurge too! They are magnificent!!
To your point, I bought a black Saint Laurent blazer 5 years ago and it's timeless. Every time I put it on I feel amazing and it's been the best investment: the quality and cut is phenomenal and I never need to look for another black blazer again. As for good cashmere, Johnstons of Elgin does the best cashmere.
so so many reasons for this and for the return of the more polished/minimalistic look in general, we have come to that time of the cycle were we are seeing the come back of that 90s look miranda and charlotte were rocking in the first seasons of sex and the city, the fascination for the asian aesthetic brought by kpop, kdramas, japanese style, the state of the economy... so so so SO many reasons
i couldn't agree with you more!!...timelessness, fine noble materials, simplicity without flashy logos etc etc, but also i would say that workmanship is essential in elevating a piece to 'luxury' level. high end items have impeccable cuts and the detail is exceptional ! Great post !!
I have to say I am on board with the quiet luxury...whatever you want to call it. Trend? I was not into luxury brands most of my life and just have become aquainted with them in the past 3 years or so. I like a classic look and understated elegance.
I share your love for pillow mists. I will even use regular perfume (just a spritz, it lasts for days) on my pillows, if I want a particular scent that is not available as pillow mist. It just makes me happy. I go to sleep and wake up in a good mood, and that feeing is priceless.
When you used the term stealth wealth, my first thought was Warren Buffet. So, when you were giving an example of a stealth wealth handbag, I thought you were going to suggest something like a LL Bean Boat Tote. I guess I learned that the wealthiest people do not show their money. Or rather, they are wealthy because they do not live extravagantly. This might be a generational thing. A very interesting topic indeed!
True! I like mixing all prices together. I am also glad that everyone can get something that looks designer, if that's what they're into, for less because so many designer pieces are being replicated so well!❤
My personal quiet luxury is the jurlique hand cream, the best hand cream ever! the scent rose is also so nostalgic and comforting for me because it reminds me of my mum :)) Also this is the first video I watched from you Michele and I really enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the great content
I think Quiet Luxury is relevant to the purchaser and their personal attitude. It’s more apreciation to quality and longevity, less keeping up with the Joneses or needing to be seen. I really like your explanation of Quiet Luxury and personal appreciation and the concern for having your stuff out there and a target on your back.
Quiet luxury is simply texture, texture and texture tailored in exquisite quality fabrics in monotones that will stand the test of time. Wearing them makes you feel elevated and making a fashion statement in understated elegance. Your black jacket is stunning and to die for with that whiff of scent that you really enjoy while wearing it.
My quiet luxury is a heavy cashmere sweater that I only wear indoors. It's too bulky to wear out for style purposes, but keeps me nice and warm in the winter.
You did such a great job of breaking this down. I think some aspects of Saint Laurent are in the 'quiet luxury' category, with the tailoring and cut of some of their pieces. Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham...I would also add Michael Kors Collection because if you know...you know.
Quiet luxury for me is over all being classic .. but before expending clear out your debts (guilty) lol . But in a more affordable fashion I think Ralph L , Zara , uniquelo can help find decent quality items to start believe it or skims t shirts are super comfortable. You can shop around for luxury handbags for good prices and keep the jewelry simple.
I remember learning about Quiet Luxury in the late 80's early 90's when I was working for a law firm. I remember the attorneys had designer bags without the logos and their pants and jackets were very high-quality fabrics. I think your style is very Quiet Luxury that why I follow you.
I love the baseball hats from Varsity headwear. They are logo less, quality hats and you can get them in different materials such as linen or cashmere. I have several and it is one of those subtle things that makes me feel special when I put one on.
Great topic, Michelle! To me, there are three levels of luxury; off the rack, bespoke, and haute couture. (I would never be able to afford haute couture but a girl can dream.) However, quiet luxury equals something not easily identified by the masses and of course is excellent quality and craftmanship. Quiet luxury is buying something because you KNOW and UNDERSTAND why it is what it is and why the price is justified. Quiet luxury isn't meant to show off to the world who you're wearing. You posed a good question about Hermes which my opinion is it's no longer quiet luxury - it's become a status symbol, a way to show off your wealth. The same with LV and the other houses that have their logos plastered over everything. For that money, you can get a custom bespoke bag that truly has the same if not better craftmanship, and the house isn't getting free advertising off of us. Also, to me, quiet luxury is old money, or just someone who wants exceptional quality with limited quantities. I'm with you on spending on the laundry detergent, I got hooked on that Glamwash which I use on the items like you do. However, for my towels, and other clothing, I use those wool balls in the dryer and sprinkle essential oils on them. My towels and clothes pick up the scent and it lasts! PS Your skin looks amazing. I was watching some of your old videos and you've not aged and in fact, your skin glows more now than ever! Appreciate you and the time you put into your videos. I love them.
Totally your last point, in a lot of big and even medium cities crime is SUPER HIGH, making people not want to go out wearing their flashiest watches, shoes, and bags. When the economy turns, sure fashion is more quiet, but I think this has more to do with increased crime in the present downturn than just wanting to be 'quiet'.
For me, quiet luxury means bespoke, hand-made pieces that use the highest quality materials, preferably in limited quantities. Designers and labels don’t necessarily make for quiet luxury imo, although they are “luxuries”🙃 both are great though
I have two thoughts on this subject. On more general note what I’ve been observing: this social media / content behaviour of “labelling” of trends, aesthetic, or lifestyles that currently is increasingly happening very rapidly across the mainstream due to social media/TikTok. It affects any subject, not only fashion. In this case, the notion of superb quality without screaming logos or iconic / loud brand signifiers has been around forever. But now it has a sticky label so we must have an opinion about it, even facilitates polarisation, or are influenced to act on its presence (to consume or to share our opinions). I’m not super fond of it (maybe I’m too old). Secondary, we’re trying to push it into it being an aesthetic which it is not entirely: quiet luxury is something that is more of a notion and personal quality of discernment in how you consume and what you choose to experience. As you try to explain, aiming for great quality that is doing something for you vs pleasing the eye of others or getting recognition of the mass. The emphasis is therefore more “multi-sensorial” and on “experience” than the over-indexing of the “visual of a thing”. This is something that is hard to communicate to others through our currently over-indexed on visual media consumption, hence i think there was a need to have it labelled and therefore it may be reinterpreted or misinterpreted quicker(I.e. a synonym to minimalistic style), therefore people still may consume quantity over quality unfortunately. I can go on and on on this but it’s definitely going to be interesting how this will have an impact or not, beyond those who already have this discernment (like Michele and some of us) and just continue to do what they were doing.
I think there is a very interesting conversation surrounding this topic. Those that prefer it as an aesthetic choice (me) and also the discussion that is being had around people using this to be elitist and to (in some cases) gain proximity to whiteness/ be anti-minority (not me, but totally get it). Ever since I was a kid, this has always been my aesthetic. When I would go school shopping my parents would ask me why I didn't like any of the shirts with logos on them. My response was that I did not want to advertise for other people. Even until recently, if my bag has a logo or name on the clasp I would turn it around, do people couldnt see the name. I don't know why but wearing peoples names or brands on me always felt so weird. Now that I am an adult, I would rather the quality, cut and/ or styling of my clothes to be the thing that stands out the most. So I am a bit more happy that there are more options in this aesthetic that are accessible to everyone now- especially in the mid-range category.
I think Hermès, Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Bulgari, Rolex… Those types of brands they are not quiet at all, we all know their designs. But that’s because they’re in a upper level of luxury, the one that’s well established and became popular in general acknowledgment, but yet still exclusive for few.
A really interesting podcast is Articles of Interest - American Ivy series, so interesting! It goes through the whole idea and movement and now where it is today - definitely intertwined in what quiet luxury is.
I just discovered this channel. First time to listen to you and I am loving this conversation. I agree quiet luxury is more of a style that has been around for ages. I always liked the idea of "those in the know, knows". It makes it even feel more "luxury".
I need someone to talk about quiet luxury in tropical climates and for everyday active life. Yes we also invest in cashmere, wool, knits, blazers but that's for occasional use for us folks if we travel to cold places. Blazers are needed by corporates in our winter-like air-conditioned offices but the textiles are less bulky. Then again, not the majority in this locale. So for now it's linen and good accessories like quality leather and jewelry, silk or pashmina shawls. And good skin, hair, nails, natural teeth and eyebrows are great clues of wealth imho. Fragrance that people only realize you are wearing if they have the privilege to hug you, not one that they can smell a meter away.
Fantastic description. Nailed it.
I immediately pictured Olivia Palermo with this description

❤️
I'm considered lower middle class and all my clothes come from Walmart, I work 12 hour shifts at toyota, that said I have no business watching this video but my goal is to have nice clothes. I love your style, I have been looking into lilly silk and even if it takes a year to get one piece at a time that's what I want to do. ❤ you
Hi I saw people saying to go thrifting in areas where people have wealth ...I am from Uganda and I get thrifted things from Hong Kong and the UK
Thanks, that's a great idea! I'll keep my eyes open.
@@KyanUganda-yh5bc yep. It's what I do. I have found amazing fabric thrifting.
I inherited a beautiful strand of pearls from a relative. I wear these beauties with my H&M blouses, and this is my quiet luxury. Only I know the story behind them.
Love this. 💕
I have two Chanel pearl necklaces that I snagged from The Real Real and I already told my niece that I am leaving to her.
Beautifully said ❤️
@@everydayfefe Not to be that person, but the real real is controversial for the pieces and whether their actually authentic.
True and beautiful! Great comment ❤️
Ralph lauren purple line is actually pretty luxurious
This 100%
Umm she didn't start the trend because this has been going on for years before she was even born
@@MT-hk9cp Absolutely. She was a minimalist because it was the Calvin Klein metiere at the time, who she worked for.
True story. Calvin Klein is a quiet, classic underrated brand tho.
Jackie Kennedy started this trend. ❤
Quiet luxury has been here forever - and it is not really brands but what one choses - you can wear a classic dolce & Gabbana trouser suit or Versace coat and still be on the realm of quiet … it is for me more about the choice of fabrics, colours and cut …
Absolutely correct
Quiet luxury is the ability to donate money and provide assistance anonymously without seeking recognition or acknowledgement. Sending your PJ out to help someone in need, because that is the right thing to do. "Old money" as it use to be stated. As if, you don't need to display to the world what you have, because you already have it! You then simply smile to yourself. Others find out, once they get to know you and that is quiet luxury. You don't need to scream look at me with any designer logos.
Exactly.
That’s not quiet luxury, that’s altruism and you don’t have to be considered “old money” to participate.
My own quiet luxury : using really fine/handmade artist made Japanese teacups for my everyday drink. Same for chopsticks.
❤
Sephora sales… 😂 … this comment made me chuckle!
That isn’t luxury for the population she’s referencing.
I am 65 and I do not go to the hair or nail salon but I do have a cleaning lady. That is my quiet luxury.
Hermes is
@@MM-nx3lk Correct. Hermes, Vitton and Gucci are. It is plural.
@@ellabraitman6336 they meant that Hermès *is* quiet luxury
Hermes is definetly quiet luxury and depending on the items Gucci and LV can be as well.
Thanks for the tip! Gotta see if it's near to where we'll be!
Food is a quiet luxury for my BF and I 😍 We always get asked “what’s the special occasion” and we’re like, “ we’re just hungry” 😊
❤
😂😂😂
This response is so funny 😂
Love this! The experience makes it luxury.
Well said.
Thank you.
Second hand is such a great shortcut to get the more expensive items without breaking your wallet.
High-quality fabrics is my main focus, too. My skin can’t tolerate synthetics!
My quiet luxury has always been related to travel. I travel at least business class and when I'm going to be staying in a hotel (even though I'm very picky about hotels) I take my own pillow and some of my beautiful silk pillowcases. I also carry an extra suitacse for my mattress topper. I like to sleep well 😂
Love that ❤️
Quiet Luxury is for the Nouveau Riche who want to be distanced from New Money but can't be Old Money😆
But I personally feel that Quiet Luxury is supporting craftspeople who pour their heart and soul into their creations.
Let’s be clear though, just because some luxuries don’t fall under this category, doesn’t make them tacky or tasteless or unstylish.
Michele, I got turned onto the Shisedo cotton pads because of you and I’ve never looked back. Haven’t graduated to the CdP yet. ❤
My parents have always said the same thing about logos!
💗
For me, I don't think quiet luxury is all about 'if you know, you know club', but rather wearing stuff with the most comfortable and enduring fabrics that you can enjoy and that can be worn so many times without losing their characteristics. Not to silently expose your wealth to the world.
And also being able to pick beautiful garments even from the cheapest store, combine it with your silent luxury items in a beautiful way. As it is silent, the outfit speaks of its timeless beauty and lets you shine on your own.
Everything that smells like "exclusive club" is a fly trap. You got it right!
I definitely do not think Hermès is quiet luxury anymore. If you walk in with a Birkin on your arm, it couldn’t scream louder.
Quiet luxury reads to me as a form of classism and elitism. Once before the LV brand was upper echelon, something to aspire to have. It’s become available to more people. So, for people to further set them self apart, a new tier has to be added. So now we have quiet luxury.
Hermes stopped being quiet luxury when they decided to make those belts and bracelets with the logo that can be seen everywhere.
👍🏻❤️
And the knock off of their blanket is everywhere as well!
They have prostituted themselves. Hermes is not quiet luxury at all.
Still most people wouldn’t know the fashion house based on that and they have tons of other belt options
Yes thank you!
Exactly! 😊
So true.
Like Mark Zuckerberg’s Brunello Cucinelli gray tee that looks like Hanes but cost around 1K
@@Jelenicko it's all about the fit. Hanes shirts don't fit nearly as well.
As a former designer who only dealt in luxury textiles. Quiet luxury is having bespoke clothing..which most people know very little about. Most of my clothing is bespoke. That’s quiet luxury. I do love Jil Sanders, one of my favorite brands..been wearing JS for years
Can you share more? What does that mean “bespoke clothing”? Sorry I’m not familiar with the terms.
@@jenniebensch7216 tailor made by dress or suit makers who don’t need to advertise and no signage outside of their workshop.
👍🏼
Yes! I love a matte silk. Growing up in China, the shiny silk is mostly for under layers. Over the years because of stress and the American diet I am so so sensitive to anything synthetic, my fav silk pieces are all stolen from my mom’s closet she bought years and years ago.
Quiet luxury is quality and longevity
❤️
My go to quiet luxury moment is a spray of my Le Labo Another 13. Whether I’m alone at home in my lounge wear, or nipping out to do errands, a quick spray just lifts my mood and puts a smile on my face 🦋
A great perfume does wonders for one's well-being 👌🏻

I like it too but it’s super light
Yes that’s wonderful!!
😊
LOVED this conversation.
I think w brands like LV and Hermès, with regards to their bags, the bag was to really look _worn_ and used - like Mary Kate Olsen’s Hermès Kelly bag. Yes, it’s an identifiable bag and loud (like LV’s monogram bags), but it’s been used with a degree of carelessness that most ppl without stealth wealth simply cannot do because they’re too preoccupied with making sure their bags don’t get nicked by keeping them in their dust bags.
Oh yes I love that!!
So true!
Worn is one thing, trashed is another thing altogether and MKO’s bag isn’t a look anyone should ‘aspire’ to.
Translated into a person, Neelam Ahooja represents quiet luxury to me. Being inspired by her style, I've been transforming my wardrobe ever since I discovered her. Especially the timeless and sustainable aspects of her style I love so much.
She’s amazing!!!
I think Max Mara is quiet as well.
I agree with you about the shishedo cotton pads. I used to get them at Sephora but I find them at Marshall’s now. Once you try them your hooked.
I do think Hermes is quiet luxury. While those two handbags are well known everyone isn't able to easily identify their other pieces.
True true. Thank you!

I’m watching this as I dress for work. Putting on a dress I bought on clearance at Walmart for $3.00 😂😂😂 love you, Michelle ❤

Not so fast fashion labels take on blazers, especially all those polyester lining….You are right.

I think Hermes is still quiet luxury especially their clothing. You have to really know the brand to look at a "plain" coat or blazer to know its Hermes, but you can tell it is made of high quality fabrics. I agree with you on quiet luxury as little ways to make you feel special. It is very personal.

Yep, I buy myself the Cle de Peau cotton/silk squares. I love them and they are my treat to me. Very interesting topic and food for thought.
so so many reasons for this and for the return of the more polished/minimalistic look in general, we have come to that time of the cycle were we are seeing the come back of that 90s look miranda and charlotte were rocking in the first seasons of sex and the city, the fascination for the asian aesthetic brought by kpop, kdramas, japanese style, the state of the economy... so so so SO many reasons
i couldn't agree with you more!!...timelessness, fine noble materials, simplicity without flashy logos etc etc, but also i would say that workmanship is essential in elevating a piece to 'luxury' level. high end items have impeccable cuts and the detail is exceptional !
Great post !!
The Birkin is so well known now it is no longer quiet. It is a loud statement. Prada now with the placement of their logos is no longer.
❤️
I’ve always loved quiet luxury. It makes me feel a calm confidence.
I am also glad that everyone can get something that looks designer, if that's what they're into, for less because so many designer pieces are being replicated so well!❤
Hermes is becoming the new Rolex.
My personal quiet luxury is the jurlique hand cream, the best hand cream ever! the scent rose is also so nostalgic and comforting for me because it reminds me of my mum :))
Also this is the first video I watched from you Michele and I really enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the great content
Thank you! ❤️
❤️
My quiet luxury is a heavy cashmere sweater that I only wear indoors. It's too bulky to wear out for style purposes, but keeps me nice and warm in the winter.
You did such a great job of breaking this down. I think some aspects of Saint Laurent are in the 'quiet luxury' category, with the tailoring and cut of some of their pieces. Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham...I would also add Michael Kors Collection because if you know...you know.
I love that you did this with Grace ! Both of you have your own style. I’ll watch and edit !

❤️
Just Scandinsvian minimalism. Everyone dresses like this in my Northern European country ever since I can remember.
For me, quiet luxury means bespoke, hand-made pieces that use the highest quality materials, preferably in limited quantities. Designers and labels don’t necessarily make for quiet luxury imo, although they are “luxuries”🙃 both are great though
Ohhh. Lemaire….super quiet and honestly epic.
A really interesting podcast is Articles of Interest - American Ivy series, so interesting! It goes through the whole idea and movement and now where it is today - definitely intertwined in what quiet luxury is.
👍🏼
I just discovered this channel. First time to listen to you and I am loving this conversation. I agree quiet luxury is more of a style that has been around for ages. I always liked the idea of "those in the know, knows". It makes it even feel more "luxury".
❤️
