Hi from southern New Zealand 👋😃 great results, glad it came good for you and I think it's the right call to really slam those mites down. One of my hobbyists had a horrendous mite problem, deformed wing and chalkbrood thick like a chalk mine but he's pulled his colony through and it's looking really good now so it is possible to bring them back from heavy mites but conditions were ideal with good incoming nectar and pollen and our main nectar flow thyme flowering as well. Great video 👍👋😃
Good stuff Bruce. Looks like you were successful with those mites. When you pull started your sugar pump a big praying mantis was jumping out of your way. I love seeing them around and they love honey bees.
Tha k you for sharing you mite adventures, definitely good to see others' experience to learn from. Im kinda jealous that you get to still be in your bees still. Im sad that ive already tucked mine away for the winter lol.
I scale way back this time of year. Mainly just checking weight and feeding appropriately and of course trying to keep the mite load under control. A break can actually be nice. 😎
I’ve noticed in Central MS that even though I knock mites WAY back in August, they tend to rebound early fall. I ended up OA in September after Apigaurd. I then put sponges in till my December OA. I think us southern baws just have to carry a bigger hammer when it comes to mites. Warm fall didn’t help ….
I think the treatments you did was overall very effective !! I like to use the apiguard also and when I can get the Varroxan strips to follow with !! I bet that should also work well !! If you get up this way let me know you are coming and we will meet up !!
Great video Bruce!! 4 gr/box?? I know a guy that knows a fellow that has a cousin that uses that dosage pretty regular!!! 😆 See you soon in Louisville!!!!
I like the Guardian Bee Apparel products. I like their pullover jacket and bee pants for the feisty hives. Can work the bees in shorts if you have the bee pants. But they also have traditional bee jackets and bees suits.
Just hope you didn’t harm the bees going off label and combining treatments. I have seen one Beekeeper vid that killed his queen by using 2 types too close together. Yes you shock killed the mites but let people know a follow-up of the results later. May prove useful in alternative treatment plans. I am curious about someone combining a treatment with the SHB traps in the oil as a slow release. Treated pets for ear mites before with mineral oil. Above my abilities to develop though.
I did treat everything with Apivar. I was shocked that the count was so high. That was an outlier and I had another one in the 60s but most were nowhere near that high. I went ahead and treated them all the same though. Hopefully it was then right thing to do.
I think if you dropped them down into singles after your honey pull then treat them in singles. That will get you a good knock out and get rid of the field bees .. open feed them help choke that nest down small for the summer. Time it right then build them back up for the fall flow. Probably could split them after the fall flow I think you could. Get them back into singles and treat them again for the winter. Way more effective in a single box. Why lan only treats in singles
Hi Bruce, congratulations on the great results and video. At 13:14 Praying Mantis just missed getting squashed when you started up the pump!
Yeah I saw that when I was editing. Cool bugs. Thanks for checking in!
Bruce, I thank you for sharing your adventures. Always educational.
Thanks for checking in!

Yes I think that it would be an advantage to have thyme growing nearby. A natural mite killer.

Yeah I actually saw that when editing. They are impressive bugs.
@brucesbees * No fair, you get a sneak peek 😂
Haha

Excellent looking brood nest for this time of year. Looks healthy .
I wonder how many mites under the capping?
Yeah I don’t know. Gonna treat with OAV over the next few weeks.

I believe you are correct. I have really tried to do a better job of assessing and treating mites of late.
I always enjoy your videos. I'm glad your bees are doing well after treatment!
Thank you!
00:07:02 * Man, that's some brood!😮
Yeah it was pretty nice on those couple of frames.
Excellent looking bees also great results from this treatment 👏👏👏💪👍
Yes I am pleased. Thanks!
Mantis @13:14....cool
Great video! Thanks for sharing. My girls either ate the Apigard cardboard or propolized it. They are looking good going into winter.
That’s awesome Lisa! I’m glad to hear they are doing well going into winter.
Great video Bruce! I’m excited to watch you work bees in our off season! 😂
Yeah I hear ya. Wouldn’t mind a little break but it’s not as intense now as usual. Kind of in a holding pattern.
I think the treatments you did was overall very effective !! I like to use the apiguard also and when I can get the Varroxan strips to follow with !! I bet that should also work well !! If you get up this way let me know you are coming and we will meet up !!
Yeah seems like that might work. Thanks for the invitation!
Enjoy your videos. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃. Everyone 😊
Thanks! You too!!!
Way to knock them down Bruce. That bad hive probably wasn't a mite bomb since your hives you checked were so low. Have a great Thanksgiving day.

Heehee. It’s works! Or at least I think it does.
Bruce, after the first Apiguard treatment did you wait a week or so to let the Thymol dissipate before doing the OAV or just followed it rite with it?
Yes I did it the next weekend. I think doing it all the same day might be a bit much.
@brucesbees I believe you made the rite call, thanks.
Thank you for the information 😮. What is the beekeeper suit in your mind looking to get my 2nd suit ?

@brucesbees thank you . I'm looking at them to.

Bruce, how far away do you place your totes when you open feed your bees?
Usually 30 to 40 yards or more. I have some that are a little closer. I don’t worry as much about it as some do.
Hey Bruce, I was just curious about your thoughts on how you got to 75 mites. Did you treat earlier in the season? Thanks, John
I did treat everything with Apivar. I was shocked that the count was so high. That was an outlier and I had another one in the 60s but most were nowhere near that high. I went ahead and treated them all the same though. Hopefully it was then right thing to do.
@ I’ve had them around 60 and very rarely was able to save them. It’s always worth trying at least.
I had good results using Apiguard. But have reduced treatment to 33g and treat twice to prevent queen loss
Yeah I went a half dose when the temps were warmer.
I had one I counted 42 and it is a very strong hive I hit them with 4 grams too but I did it for 8 treatments one per week not there mites are gone

Hope your health issue is getting better bro
Thanks! I appreciate it!
