For those not familiar with Sniffles, this was Chuck Jones' first recurring character at Warner Bros. His debut was in the short Naughty but Mice from 1938. He starred in 12 shorts (11 were Merrie Melodies, the final one, a Looney Tunes short), the final one being Hush My Mouse in 1946. I'm sure most people first learned of his existence through his cameo appearance in Space Jam where he gets squished by one of the Monstars while constantly chatting. (The Monstar in question was Blanko, the tall blue one)
Yeah not a lot of people liked him because they felt he wasn't Looney enough and was too Disney. Not as Disney as Foxy but this was due to Chuck Jones trying to get a feel of how to be an animation director
I loved this cartoon as a kid, his little house was so cute and the animation was so good, really detailed. I still love this now. Thanks for showing this. ❤🎄🙋🏻♀️
This cartoon is magnificent, the animation is so beautiful, Sniffles' facial expressions are brilliantly animated, Chuck Jones and his undeniable talent, but I confess that this is a character I practically didn't know beyond pictures, readings and the few times I saw him on TV a long time ago, I barely remember him. But the subject of the plot is something that remains true to this day, at least for some people (like me): it doesn't matter if you're a child or an adult, it's hard to stay awake until midnight on Christmas Eve, especially after the day so full of tasks that precede it.
I think this was my first Sniffles short. I'll be honest here. Sniffles was never my favorite character. He was one of Jones' earliest creations when he was trying too hard to copy Disney and the pacing is a bit too slow. This particular short is rather dull for me (I mean, the entire plot is Sniffles trying to stay awake for Santa), though the Haxwell Mouse coffee gag is cute and the animation of Sniffles dancing is lovely. His last three shorts, The Unbearable Bear, Lost and Foundling and Hush My Mouse were probably his best ones as Jones had finally found his creative spark and humor by then.
Sure compared to what he later did at Warner Bros this isn't one of his best shorts but for a early effort by Chuck Jones the animation especially the facial animation are good and it's a charming Sniffles short.
I always LOVE how outrageously funny are the Loony Tunes. But this one with Sniffles the mouse is very tender & heartwarming, even for a cold guy like me.🙂
Sniffles is an incredibly overlooked Looney Tunes character. His naive-ness and chatterbox personality is definitely a part of what stands him out. People will overlook him as not Looney enough but praise a boring as sin sitcom that's anything but Looney. (looking at YOU, 2011 show...)
This cartoon is so sweet! The animation is wonderful (that dance near the radio--animated by Phil Monroe--is brilliant) and Carl Stalling's music sets the mood so well! Perfect cartoon to watch just before Christmas! 😊
This is one of those rare classic short subject pictures that needs to be back on theatre screens for this time of the year instead of the advertisements of local businesses. Boy, do I miss you Sniffles Mouse.
I saw that cartoon on my family's black and white RCA TV every Christmas when I was a kid. As a four year old, I was disappointed that Sniffles missed Santa Claus! Nice to see it in color, and it brings back memories.
A lot of Chuck Jones' earlier shorts were quite slow paced. If you want a challenge, try watching "Good Night Elmer". The entire short is Elmer vs. a candle!
I remember seeing this mouse in a couple of cartoons when I was little and from I remember, his main characteristic was that he wouldn't stop talking and annoyed others? And later on I recall him making an appearance in Space Jam.
It’s visually pleasing yes but before Chuck Jones wrote Wile E Coyote and What’s Opera Doc that appealed to everyone, he wanted to appeal to younger children with Sniffles before he gave Sniffles a personality in The Unbearable Bear. Sniffles was also really popular in Comic Books. I do like however some of the visual gags like Dartmouse instead of Dartmouth or Maxwell Mouse Coffee instead of Maxwell House Coffee. Sniffles waking up thinking that he got measles is also decent.
Concerning the comic books, Sniffles went on adventures with a little girl by the name of Mary Jane. She had the ability to make herself as small as Sniffles (usually by sprinkling some magical sand on herself and reciting some magical rhyme. Though eventually, the magical sand was omitted) Those stories actually sound a lot more interesting than the actual cartoon shorts.
I’m not actually sure how old Sniffles is supposed to be. He looks after a baby hawk in “Lost and Foundling” (This short also has him drinking coffee at one point to stay awake) and in his very first short “Naughty but Mice”, he gets drunk on cough medicine! 🤣
@@Connordavidson-fm5le I dunno, but Káťa from "Káťa a Škubánek" (I believe you don't know this animated series, but this is a good example anyway) is a kid too, but she lives alone too - even she has a dog (Škubánek). And Sniffles sounds like a child. But it's just a cartoon anyway, so you are supposed to watch it and don't think about what is real or not. And Sniffles' parents aren't important there, so that must be why they are absent.
i know this cartoon gets a lot of Hate but i was made back in 1940. which is like a Decade Ago also i think this was chuck Jones' first Cartoon before The Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner Cartoons. But TBH Jones at least Tried His Best
Well, he had been directing since 1938. I myself had been guilty of ridiculing his pre-1942 efforts, but I appreciate how even he found a way to stand out from the other directors
@@christhophercruzflores This was one of Jones' early work. He was trying too hard to imitate Disney's style, so his shorts came off as too cutesy and the movements were far too slow. To be honest, I'm not really a fan of this short myself but I don't hate it. I just find it rather boring.
That was great new video bro 😎, but you can make video’s on Bosko? If you don’t know that, Bosko is the first looney tune in the history of the looney tunes.
@talalmashli9510 Simply put his shorts up to Ride Him Bosko didn't get their copyrights renewed decades ago. Correct. A friend of mine was surprised that Sniffles was a legitimate cartoon character. Thought the little guy was just made up for that one gag. This was my first Sniffles short, so I actually recognized him from that Space Jam cameo.

@ Yeah everyone says Buddy’s the worst even making him the butt of jokes on Anamaniacs
Sniffles 🤧: Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
I think that we can at least all agree that every character had a better personality compared to Buddy.
Sniffles trying to stay up to see Santa Claus. I remember when I saw this as a kid with my mom she said, "But he doesn't come when you're awake."
Decades later, Sniffles still brings tears to my eyes. Happy Holidays to All.
Me , too . 😢 I just loved him .
Would you believe I saw this particular cartoon when I was eight in 1961? In WPIX tv in Jersey City. And I still like it in 2024 now I am 71.🙂
Sniffles is an Looney Tunes icon. Thank you, Chuck Jones!
One that not a lot of people liked due to him not being Looney enough

Well Sniffles I do appreciate how you helped Chuck Jones learn the ropes on being a director in animation
Some would even call it a Disney knock-off
