I speak Spanish as a second language and my gf is Venezuelan. I'm used to fast Spanish, it doesn't really bother me. But once in a while, I swear to God, you'll run into a native who speaks like there's a time limit.
I'm bilingual and my gf of many years is also from Vzla, the accents from Vzla are very easy to understand and not fast at all, now her family in Chile is another story.

By "some", I mean from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico, from anywhere else I really need to ask them to slow down or ask if they know English or Portuguese lol ~never spoke with a Venezuelan tho, so idk
you cant really classify languages by speed, im a spanish speaker and can tell you not all hispanohablantes speak fast. some countries speak super fast some slow, some areas of the same country could talk fast and others slow. i think linguistic speed has more to do with social influence than linguistic influence. id also point out the speed may be perceived differently by a non speaker, a spanish speaker may say i speak slow but a speaker who isnt a native speaker might say i speak too fast.
I agree about the social point, but about how speed may be perceived differently, the study already gives clear metrics: how many syllabes people in average pronounce per second and how much information is given per second. I may be completelly wrong and I didn't read the original work (and don't even know if they are talking about the same work), but somepost that I saw In instagram says that the conclusion is that in average we all give the same ammount of information per second. For example, Japanese... (the example given by metatron about the "ikitai desuga..." would just translate to "I can't/won't" in english, considering cultural aspects, which is much shorter when spoken) uses a lot of honorifics and polite language that doesn't add much usefull information about what is being trasmitted, only social information. Because of that, people tend to say more syllables per second, though the amount of information per second is the same. And that is a preety big claim. That we, humans, in average transmit and receive auditory information at roughly the same rate.
Metatron, I think it would be better if you waited a little bit more to interrupt the video in order to do your commentary. Some of your comments were obvious for the average viewer of this channel and seconds later the video itself explained everything.
I finally know why Metatron speaks the way he does. It's not that he speaks fast, more that he speaks fast in bursts with certain sets of syllables that I’d hazard a guess are similar to Italian..
Objectively speaking yes, there are languages which are spoken very fast due to their very nature, but individual tendencies are also important. There will be slower speakers and faster speakers.

I feel bad for those who come to Bucharest to learn Romanian. 😂 We speak slowly, while also skipping syllables "for efficiency". Not only that, we also use words that aren't gramatically right, filler words (how english speakers use "like"/"i mean" seemingly at random) and also skip verbs sometimes. It's so funny that other romanians identify you immediately for being from Bucharest. It has happened to me numerous times while on a train to hear "you're from Bucharest, right?". 😂
Language speed is why I only learn with material created for native speakers even if it's for kids. I don't like when "learner materials" slow down the speech to unrealistic levels.

Great content, this channel is my favorite of yours though I also follow the main one.
I'm Javanese, I notice that the further west the slower people talk. Only Javanese tho, because if you go even further west, you get Sundanese and they talk in normal speed as far as I know.
It’s the same in French, the closest to Switzerland you get, the slower they speak, Swiss French is the slowest dialect of French, but if you get too deep into Switzerland, it changes to German
i watched on some nerd in youtube or something and said that while syllable for second might be fast in languages in japanese etc but information speed is at the same speed for all languages and the only reason why a language might have higher syllable per second could be bc their words are longer so the speaker has to speak faster.
He really conflates too many things in Chinese - it’s not like the tone “adds information” to a syllable; it’s really not all that different from a vowel variant. And as you note, he also conflates the components of a character with “units of information” in actual morphemes.
Your video title and description is being shown to me in nonsensical, broken Portugazilian. Please disable the automatic translation, will you? I much rather read them in English.
I think Olly really doesn’t provide that much more interesting discussion… on top of that, the statistics that he uses are moat of the time flawed or applied wrong… I like the idea of his story learning approach but his books acually suck. I tried the Korean one and it was the worst book I ever read for language learning.

how many language do you know?
With Chinese, if a kid's voice cracks, wouldn't that make his tone wrong and theoretically make him mispronounce any given word?
