"Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art." -Frédéric Chopin
The sound for this movie to me was perfect, and the sound of the harmonium is just chilling, I love it, three sharp and heavy notes. I would compare it to the sound of the tripods from War of the Worlds, just terrifying and awesome at the same time
If you think about it, the first of the 3 note instances catches you off guard because it’s something new to such a good sounding song, and as it happens more you begin to be desensitized to it. Just like being in a combat zone.
Agreed. Funny how you mention the Tripods from War of the Worlds cuz when I heard this theme play, I only had one phrase in my mind... "War Machine". Which is what I thought the theme was named.
God, that bass burst is just so perfect. It captures everything you need to know about the uncaring and unfeeling nature of war itself, how the machine never slows, and never stops grinding away at the corpses of the fallen until nothing is left but red stains.
The long dragged out ticks of what seems to be a clock really shows how they prolonged the war as much as they could, it can also be a representation of a soldier dying every tick. There are many ways to interpret this masterpiece
People are saying that it’s just three notes, but I think it captures the First World War perfectly. So many war movies and games have sweeping and powerful music during battle scenes, however; this soundtrack lets you know immediately that there is nothing to be celebrated about going to war or fighting in battle. It’s gritty, it’s dark, and depressing.
This movie is really good and truly devastating to watch in the Germans eyes.Frist time seeing tanks in this music is like you are going insane and going into hell.
Just watched this movie today and the soundtrack, the cinematography, the acting, everything gave me chills. One of the best movies I have ever seen, and this encapsulated the feeling of it perfectly, amazing editing! ❤
In the 6 hours between the armistice being signed and it going into effect, 3,000 men died. One, an American, fell in the final minute. 3,000 sons and fathers who didn't go back home, because the big men up the chain wanted to inspire poetry. World War II may have been the most devastating modern conflict, but the first was far more pointless. It was an endlessly-churning grinder that swallowed souls and pushed out widows and orphans, only kept in operation because a small group of pampered geezers thought it ought to. To cite Kait Rokowski: "Nothing ever ends poetically; it ends, and we turn it into poetry." "All that blood was never once beautiful. It was just red."
Ich bekam sofort Gänsehaut als ich es in dem Film zum ersten Mal gehört hatte, das zuhause mit einer Soundbar, wie muss es dann erst im Kino gewesen sein. 💪
Around 40,000 men died every 20 meters of enemy positions captured just to be retaken days or weeks later. Somme, Verdun , Passchendaele , Ypres, Meuse-Argonne , Marne all battles meaningless with high death tolls only for a slight change of lines on a map.
I think the ending to the 1930s version of the movie is a bit better as Paul, he sees a butterfly, the same coloured butterfly he had caught when he was a child, and just then, he's shot by a French sniper and slowly dies. There was no battle, it was All Quiet on The Western Front.

Great comparison
the bass just makes it feel like the world is ending
True
For many, it did
For many, it is ending right now
It is bomb shells blasting around a soldier and it also happens at unpredictable times , kind of how it would be in a war.

This movie makes me appreciate how accurately Battlefield 1's photorealistic graphics captured WW1. The game looks exactly like this.
