- Here's the High-Grade 1/144 scale Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex. This kit's got a pretty bad case of stickers, but overall it's really interesting! Quite fun to pose with it's tail, gorilla arms, and giant feet.

It's design is almost based (or really based) on a werewolf. Werewolves have large long arms and big feet. Search for a picture of a werewolf and you'll realize that this design makes sense, since it is a Wolf King after all.

Funny, the kimaris trooper had legs in his legs, the graze ein had a body in his body and now this Has arms in his arm.
I don't get the graze ein but did you mean guns on ein's shoulders?

@harrkion I knew but I thought it was the guns because @Sherry mentioned two mobile suits with mechanical appendages on their limbs witch are metal and I thought when he/she mentioned the graze ein I thought he/she meant the guns because ein was a person and not a mechanical part of the mobile suit...

i dont know why many hate the proportions..its based on a werewolf bit if they made the feet smaller it will look worst..and HG is better than the FM for me..but still Lupus is the best version
Really? I just built the 1/100th scale and it's fucking awesome. Especially with the color separation on the toes, and tail.

like how they put big stickers for the tail blade in HG
kinda awkward looking proportions (if you looked it too much) its a design flaw i'd like to say because it has working sub arm inside the arms
and unpainted backpack
but hey who cares its cheap already
besides 1/100 is has a lot loose arm joint when he wield the weapon even bandai only give us a stand for the weapon that looks solid black
still both has unpainted claws
i forgot mention that FM 1/100 of this need more modification on the joints to stay still which is mean is no longer out of box review again

And artists should never design every main gundam in the same style. Anyone who every studied character design knows you have to give them unique silhouettes.
People don't like it *because* it's based on a warewolf. It's just weird and unconventional.
I'm sure there will be other Barbatos kits. after 00 ended they did a ton of alternate versions of the Exia, 00 Gundam, and Quanta that never appeared in the anime. not to mention there are 72 different Gundams so there's alot of room for more model kits using the Gundam frame.
If you've seen, they've released 2 more frames we've seen in the comics, I don't know how many that brings us to in total, but one of them steals most of its parts from the Astaroth Origin.

I know when I saw the neutral poses when it was first revealed, I didn't really like the Rex. That being said, it always looks really cool posed. Kinda wished the neck went back more, as it seems like it'd look really great hunched over.

and i really love the design
no complain at all
I am building this right now and see nothing too bad about it-just extra work for me as I generally like painting sticker colors with markers. But it's a good and fun gunpla endeavor. Taking longer than I expected because of all the details I am painting along the way (it has a lot of small to medium details to paint if you are picky-I didn't find painting the finger claws of each of the four hands too challenging, so pay not too much mind to such critiques... definitely, stickers would have sucked on the fingers!)
Despite some "wrong" colors, the design engineering was amazing, with very stiff arms ensuring longevity and being able to wield that enormous mace without trouble. They definitely cut costs in the color separation parts, but the design itself is ❤❤❤ for me. And in the end, it becomes even more enjoyable as I have to work and make my own choices as I "fix" the "inaccurate" colors.
Even though I didn't see the full series, am familiar with Barbatos Lupus Rex, and love its animalistic, unique design. This HG's proportions are fine by *me*! Not a regular Gundam by any stretch. 😊
In short, excellent mechanical engineering, lots of painting to do if you like details, due to a somewhat lacking color separation. You could always use the stock stickers, of course, but even the humble Gundam Markers can make a big difference in the overall end result.
Guess who's gonna build a werewolf gunpla, this guy. Can't wait to customize this.
really love how far the toe can bend on this and the original lupus. Really wish the 1/100 was able to do that :/
What can i use as a longer wire for the tail?
Love the model but the problems I kept having were the torso detaching from the waist and the weapon always falling off with the handplate haha but besides that it was a fun and easy-ish build

It’s my fav design too. I love how you can see the pistons and the mechanical detail instead of it looking perfect with everything covered with panels
i totally agree with you, "its pose really really well" thats the main selling point for this hg kit i gues
i painted the fingers of him in a really different way i dipped them in white (the longer sharp like parts) and then after 3 hours in yellow and now they look perfect yellow no weird spots with more or less paint at some points
What the use of the holes of the backpack of the Lupux Rex? is the short cannon from MS Option kit 7 compatible with it?

yeah also you can use metalic gold or yellow
but i think colloring the toes of rex may be good i recomend you to just put sticker in the toes and just paint tail and the finger

Hey zach you should see if you could modify the gundam the end's hands to work with this since his hands are yellow and shaped like claws.
What to do with the leftover parts in the runners?
I personally just keep all spare parts just in case i need it. But other than that, you can just throw it if you want cuz it has no use for the kit
anyone know any good melee-based gundam that use primarily fists? I have try burning already but I'd like another. I was gonna do titus cannon, but then I found out it wasn't by bandai so it was immediately out

I only have the HG Barbatos Lupus so I havent really tried it but have you tried taking the Lupus's shoulders and side skirts and put it on the Rex? like mix and match the parts together? I dont have the Lupus Rex yet so i was curious as to how it would look like

I think you can swap the shoulder armor since the hg IBO gundam kits have the same shoulder connection. Don't know with the the side skirt, since not all the connection part there are the same
Oh yeah I saw that. but he only changed its arms though. not the shoulder pads. I would honestly love to kit bash both Barbatos variations and see the results but the Rex is not yet available from where I am Orz
It has proportions of a sonic character but hey at least the side skirts aren't ridiculously huge
My Rex has even bigger arms...
I modded them so I could put two tail blades in place of the sub arms and they look great. I'm still working on modding the rest of the design though but it looks beastly.
could you give a tutorial on best way to fill in hollow space on a kit or like an SD
robbiesenpaiplz check out his tutorial videos he covered it before. basically you fill it with putty..then sand it down and paint over it
I look forward to the 1/100 version review too! It should probably have better proportions to match its unusually large arms and feet compared to its HG counterpart.
It's the Popeye Gundam.
His hands go past his shins where it supposed to be on his mid knee. The color accuracy on every barbatos are weak but its an easy fix.😀
what i did to my stickers is i apply double sided tape to the part where ill stick the stickers then apply sticker and its now more durable to come off...
that gundam is me when i am in the computer and i need to reach something but i don´t want to stand up.
I think the sword mace would fit better with the lupus rex and the ultra large mace would fit better with the regular lupus since the lupus's hands aren't weapons by themselves so a bigger weapon Wilkes fix that
What is the smaller hands and other unfuncional parts for? I mean I dont know how to use it and just leave it on the runner😂

The A24 piece of my copy broke. Fortunately, I had a backup. How can I strength that piece?

The yellow stickers look alright from a distance. Up close though....a completely different story....almost a nightmare to look at really....

Anyone know how decent a kit would look if the only painting you did on it was detail painting? I wanna fix color apps and whatnot so I've got some acrylics coming in but I don't have an airbrush to compliment them.
If you just paint the details then it will at least look better than with the stickers.
If you want to make the kit show accurate with just painting the missing color, it will be fine. Most of the time, painting the small detail will be better than using sticker but will consume more time. You can even topcoat it with gloss or matte topcoat to make it look less plastic. The full painting with airbrush are usually done to change the whole color to the painter custom color

Why is it that the IBO line is so insanely sticker heavy? its like Bandai tried to cut costs on the tiniest amount of plastic they couldve added for color apps
Bandai most likely wanted to keep costs low on the kits, this was done by using many stickers as well as having some equipment sold separately in the HGIBA sets.
That's most likely the reason. IBO HG kits tend to be cheaper than those of other HG lines.
The plastic isn't the expensive part, the molds are.

After this review i was having a second thought of getting this lupus rex since he is able to hold the XXXL mace without a base.

I hate it's arms. That's my number 1 issue with this kit. It looks so goofy like they put MG arms on a HG kit. I feel like I want to try and kitbash it with the regular lupus arms.
