When he’s saying these words, he’s the boy he’d once been, when he first felt that hope shine on him.
For me one of the most memorable lines Hua Cheng says to Xie Lian in the book is: "Something like saving the world, it really doesn't matter how you do it. But although it's brave, it's foolish." "Yeah" Xie Lian agreed. Hua Cheng continued. "Although foolish, it's brave." Xie Lian grinned. "Thanks." "You're welcome." Hua Cheng said. This is actually such a small and insignificant feeling moment itself and I'm sure most people don't even remember it but its so telling about how much Hua Cheng cares for Xie Lian by trying to show him another way of thinking about himself. He knows that Xie Lian thinks negatively about himself and his past actions and he knew that Xie Lian would agree to his first statement because although mentioning the bravery it puts emphasis on how foolish wanting to save the world is. And after getting Xie Lians agreement he proceeds to show him that it is still possible to think about those things more positively. Not by saying it isn't foolish at all but by focusing on the positive aspect of it. It's not so much about the topic of world saving. It's about him gently showing Xie Lian how to be able to have a more positive view of things. I just love that so much cause he does it in such a thoughtful way and Xie Lian is acknowledging that by thanking him🥺

HC practically knows everything about XL and to him, it doesn't matter as long as XL is alive. All HC wants is XL to be happy and it doesn't matter if he himself is in that picture of happiness or not because HC loves XL and wants what is best for him. I love their romance so much
I always saw this scene as vindicating. Because I think the world of Xie Lian. And am always frustrated that Xie Lian doesn't ever realise or understand how amazing he is. So when I read Hua Cheng saying stuff like this I was always just in simple agreement with him and feeling cathartic that FINALLY someone is telling Xie Lian all this. And wishing to kingdom come that Xie Lian would believe him and truly fundamentally understand and cherish himself more. But ofc as a writer I know he won't. Not yet at least. I never really saw it as Hua Cheng showing radical acceptance and support to Xie Lian and loving him as he is cause in my mind Xie Lian actually lives up to any pedestal you put him on. Even tho he doesn't see that himself. I always saw the whole Xie Lian's acceptance and love for Hua Cheng thing but I failed to realise this goes both ways. Hua Cheng is living proof of "Love is Devotion" so I never thought of Hua Cheng accepting any imperfections in Xie Lian as necessary. He must think Xie Lian is beyond perfect and worships him. But this video by Kictor and the comment made me realise that while their love is legendary it still also very much like a real life healthy relationship where both parties love and accept each other for who they are. This very human element to their noble divinity that makes them ever so slightly relatable.
