As many have said, the retention can be adjusted using a heat gun or hair dryer. The retention improves with a good belt when you're carrying. The mag release issue can be helped with some trimming of the leather. I've trimmed my supertuck so I can get a good grip for drawing. Another criticism you had was the angle (cant) of the weapon. That is a simple adjustment of the metal clips. I believe with a little research you could revisit this holster and would find that it is a remakably comfortable and effective holster. P.S. I have the Desantis Cozy Partner. It is a fine holster, but I find the comfort and effectiveness of the Crossbreed to be much better.
I've carried in Crossbreed Supertucks for over 10 years. I've had no problems with retention. There is none when the holster is off the body, but when worn, the firearm is very secure. I wear them every day while working, I end up in all kinds of positions sometimes hanging upside down. Zero issues.
Never been a fan of hybrid holsters, for Kydex holsters I use Muddy River Tactical. Rarely used leather holster any more, they also require more maintenance than Kydex holsters.
Check out the Comfort Carty IWB from the guys over at Muddy River Tactical. I have one for the SC and one for a P365xl. Most comfortable holster by far.
Slide your unloaded fire arm into the holster. Then use a heat gun to warm the kidex and work it deeper into the trigger gaurd area. I love my crossbreed holster. Never had an issue with my Ruger sr40c falling out.
I know this is an old video but I think big people aren’t the right shape for this type of holster I’m 6’ 198 and I have no waste jelly roll which I think messes up the fit. I really don’t know what’s best for your size but I think in another video leather IWB where working for others. I find leather IWB not as comfortable as crossbreed but it’s different strokes
I've been looking into this holster and most things I've read and seen say the retention comes from putting the holster on and pressing against your body? Thanks for taking the time to make a review.
You can also increase retention with a little heat around the trigger guard or the ejection port . Crossbreed has a video on TH-cam to show you how to do it.
Been wearing a Crossbreed Supertuck for about 15 years. Sounds like American Boyds magazine release protrudes too far for a carry gun. I generally carry a Glock of some type (17, 19, 23, 42) or a Sig P365. I've never had a problem with retention as I wear it with a Crossbreed belt. I also run while wearing the holster as I compete in IDPA with this holster. I use the horsehide and despite the extra cost I prefer it as it molds so nicely to my body. I've used the cowhide as well but gravitate back to the horsehide. Over the years, the Kydex has cracked and the holster was sent back to Crossbreed. They simply send me a new holster. I've tried other holsters and will continue with the Crossbreed.
Hear the trigger guard with a heat gun in the trigger area until it get soft enough for you to press it in and that will tighten the retention around the trigger guard to secure the weapon
Crossbreed's channel has a how-to playlist with an (obviously) old video of Craighead himself demonstrating retention adjustment. The process may strike some as a hassle, but it works wonderfully.
I had the same issue with the mag release, I dampened the leather in that area with water, stuffed the gun in tight and wore it until it was dry. Never had another issue. As others have said, retention comes from the friction of the gun against the leather once your belt is tightened around it. Personally, I like carrying OWB, but in the hot months the crossbreed is my go to.
Best company period. I have had mine since 2008 and sent two back due to normal wear and tear issues. They sent me back brand new ones without question. I wear this every single day in the Deep South as an HVAC technician. The retention works with the tightness of a good gun belt. If you need to adjust the retention, use a wet towel on top of the kydex and a hair dryer. Warm it up and push your finger into the trigger guard to tighten it up. Cut the leather back yourself where the mag release is or get their combat cut option.
I know this is necro - but people forget they're not just buying into a holster - but a company as well. Everything I read has told me that any issue you have - they will make it right - no questions asked. I ordered one yesterday (lucky there was a sale) and I know that they will fix any issue if it comes up. Can't wait to get min in a couple of weeks. EDIT: All he needed to do was contact the company about the mag release, and they would have made it right.
Heat up the kydex, insert your firearm and set the retention. It doesn’t take much heat and you can adjust it to your needs. That is an awesome holster
Side pressure is NOT holster retention, and when you are getting rolled around the floor by a couple thugs - you'll be wondering where your pistol went.
@@stevealexander8010 Not when your body is pressing up against the holster, thus pressing the leather, and the firearm behind it, tighter into the Kydex as it is secured there by your belt. Or in this fantasy of yours do the thugs also undress you?
Almost every critique this guy made is mostly user error or misunderstanding by user. I’d agree retention on crossbreed is on the softer side, but I’ve carried daily all day long for the last 9 years or so. Never had my gun slip out. Comfort was off the charts, often forgot I was wearing it. And the cant on crossbreed is done by moving the metal clips up or down on either side into one of the 4 hole per side, allowing many cant combinations. Think the reviewer should have spent time on crossbreed and learned it first, before getting an off the rack clunker at bass pro. I don’t know, I carry guns for a living, hard say I’d carry that gun or that desantis holster, but I’m sure they’re ok too. But crossbreed is very far beyond ok, all the way into legendary status for me. Also I mostly carry glocks in my crossbreeds. Also grabbed one of their excellent belts too. Great company and stellar products. They have a newer line of retention adjustable hybrid holsters too now, but I haven’t tried them because I’m pretty picky about where and how I carry. Don’t listen to this review, it’s half baked and largely ill informed, get the super tuck and enjoy without worry.
My TP9ESC release sits 2.75mm above the lowest part of the frame. On my CZs it's 3.5mm. The design flaw seems in the holster. But let's not shift the blame - no quality holster mfgr would make a product that releases the mag.
Tactical guns will generally have oversized mag releases so if the holster is causing mages to release it is a flaw in the design of the holster., period.
I had a crossbreed back in 2012 the were the first of that style kydex/leather and like you mentioned the retention wasn't good. The sig 229 is on the heavy side that I carried. I switched to a N8 tactical that has a slight inward twist for retention and its a great iwb but since then I've had many great too many to list 👍 good luck and good shooting
Mostly fair review. Only thing I would argue is that the retention can only really be tested while you're wearing it. Because of the leather backing, you're gonna have that pressure from your boy pushing up against it, making it tighter
I was curious after having the Desantis holster for a few months do you still like it? I was looking to get one but was curious what you thought after using it a while. Thanks for the video.
Combat cut would've probably taken care of the magazine release issue. Retention is achieved while wearing the holster and more can be added if you follow the instructions given by crossbreed. Cant is adjustable as well, just move the clips. I'm not brand loyal, I have many different brands, but crossbreed makes arguably the best iwb holster. If you're happy with what you got, good. But you gave up a great holster from a great company.
Wow brother, your audience runs from haters to blind sheep. My thoughts... I don't think you mentioned it though i may have missed it having a belt and paints is part of the retention by design, so your expecting it to stay holstered free air and shaking is a bit much. On the other hand dumping the mag is a big swing and a miss for Crossbreed. Yes the combat cut would stop that, but it should not have been available for sale with that serious a flaw. Or at the very least a warning some body types will have mag retention issues and combat cut is recommended. I have carried a Comp-Tac in the past, which is very similar in design and hands down the best comfort of any holster i have had next to my body. I own a Canik SC and love it, but it will not be my carry gun long. Tried their holster bot inside and outside the belt. Sharp edges cut, long barrel pinches and though she shoots true, she is fat! I can see myself being pinched by the blunt tip or the De Santis. As well as i don't want a Glock Holster for my Canik. If i am to spend money for a holster it will be made for my weapon. Comp Tac does not see fit to offer a holster for the Canik, so it looks like a combat cut Crossbreed is in my future. As to the Alien gear recommendation, I have two of their drop leg holsters and the missed on the smallest details and though i want another shell, i have not ordered because it offends me to take my money for a part that is going to take a month just to ship it and that's for a Glock 17 shell. By the way follow up on how that De Santis is working for you. Any pinch or bite?
Thank you for your review, those are definitely some concerns. I just ordered my Crossbreed and I will have to check for some of those issues. Did you ever try to contact Crossbreed and try and have them resolve you issues?
I contacted crossbreed and asked why they don'y have adjustable retention and they said it wasn't part of the design. They said they will add it to their list of concerns for their engineers. I wasn't going to wait around so I returned it. Best of luck my friend!
This is a poor review. This holsters don't have much retention when they're not in your waistband. They need that pressure against the leather to keep your gun snug against the kydex. Showing us how it falls out when you're not wearing it is not a good representation of the retention. It's a shame this review is a top hit on this holster
Good review. Will definitely not be picking up a Crossbreed ever. I just bought a Safariland OWB with button release retention and a paddle. It’s a bit bulky but it’s really only for Range Day. I also picked up two Bravo Concealment holsters: OWB and IWB. So far so good.
One other thing: Get a Glock for God sake. Or a Sig. Those Caniks are cheap versions of Taurus. And Taurus is shit. I don’t trust anyone reviewing a holster with such a poor taste in a daily driver.
Thanks for your input Steve. Appreciate it. I am a fairly new carrier, so I am learning as I go. I just got the Sig P365 for daily carry. This thing has been great so far with the Tolster holster. I keep the TP9 Elite at my bedside now.

Yeah this reviewer sucks. These holsters have to be worn to have retention. Showing how it falls out when it's not being worn doesn't mean anything.
Exactly. He's giving an unprofessional review. "I'm going to show you how this holster works when I'm not wearing it as intended"
Generic fit Bass Pro leather is better than Crossbreed?
Slide your unloaded fire arm into the holster. Then use a heat gun to warm the kidex and work it deeper into the trigger gaurd area. I love my crossbreed holster. Never had an issue with my Ruger sr40c falling out.
I think you gave up on a phenomenal holster is my thought. You should try again.
The retention occurs while wearing, that's how hybrid holster are designed with leather backing and Kydex front.
I know this is an old video but I think big people aren’t the right shape for this type of holster I’m 6’ 198 and I have no waste jelly roll which I think messes up the fit. Hi are you still have your canik holster if you have extra or the one you don't need i will buy from you let me known when you ready to sell!!

And that process works flawlessly. Was hard to watch this video. This company is top notch.

Agreed
Retention comes when you wear the holster.
That's the very first thing I thought of. He should've worn the holster on camera and somehow demonstrated it's lack of retention.
I had the same issue with the mag release, I dampened the leather in that area with water, stuffed the gun in tight and wore it until it was dry. Never had another issue. As others have said, retention comes from the friction of the gun against the leather once your belt is tightened around it. Aside from the comments about heating the kydex, it looks like you might have purchased the model sized for a laser.
Totally irrelevant to my Hellcat. I had none of these issues. Great holster.

Has the gun ever fallen out when you are carring? I believe your belt is part of the retention.
Sounds like a design flaw on the mag release. Why would you want the mag release sticking out that far?

Most comfortable holster I have.
I guess an American made holster doesn't work too well with a Turkish pistol.
Combat cut would fix the mag release issue.

It’s not designed to hold it when it’s not worn. Haha 😂
That gap is so the sight doesn't get stuck when you draw. You're welcome.
Have you tried the combat cut or switch your mag release to the right side?
Thanks I appreciate your video saved me from making a mistake.
Thanks for the review - you saved me a lot of time & trouble.

These arnt real issues. Retention is obtained by wearing the gun. This reviewer didn't follow directions and gave an unfair review
Retention concerns me….when I carry my gun most of my time is spent walking on my hands and doing cart wheels in parking lots. Channel blows!

Don’t blame the holster for a horrible mag release design. I wouldn’t carry that gun period.
