I watch blind reactions to feel something, like how I felt before when I first saw things. But it's some serious soul food to watch Austin Powers with someone who has already watched it!

I love that Random Task is a direct parody of the Bond villain Oddjob from Goldfinger, of course Goldfinger himself was parodied in the third Austin Powers movie.

Fun reaction to a landmark comedy. I saw that at a Drive-In on its opening weekend back in '97. To answer two of your questions... (1) yes, Big Boy restaurants are still around and that was always my favorite place to stop during road trips as a kid. They're franchised today across a ton of different names, but they're still out there to find. (2) Regarding the "Ham Sandwich" line as Austin is realizing that all of his idols have passed away. Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) was a singer in "The Mamas and the Papas" and you might remember their 1966 hit, Monday, Monday. Mama Cass passed away in her sleep at only 32. When her friend (and reporter) heard the news and called Elliot's manager to find out what happened, he saw a half-eaten ham sandwich on the night stand and begged her to report that Cass had choked on a ham sandwich. Because Cass was no stranger to drug use, her manager thought he was protecting her reputation. As it turns out, Cass died of a heart attack and had no drugs in her system. The ham sandwich story quickly became one of the first global urban legends... and many today still think that's how she died. Her daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, has a book about her mother titled "My Mama, Cass" that is scheduled to release in May 2024.

There were three Big Boy restaurants near me for my entire life, but two of them just closed down for good recently. I'm not sure why, as they always seemed to be full of people. They were there for well over 60 years. This makes me afraid for the last one.

    • @SilentSooYun
      @SilentSooYun 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

If I remember correctly, Mama Cass' heart attack was actually triggered _because_ she had dropped a great deal of weight in a very short time and her body couldn't handle the shock. She had always been a larger woman, so people _wanted_ to snicker about the sandwich; "live by the sword", "just desserts", that kind of thing. Damn shame, really, just as she was entering a whole new phase of her life...

I watch this (and its sequels) when they were new in the cinema. Big hits not only in numbers but also how people felt about it/them. At least people who actually watched them. The positive vibes in the audience was awesome thing to experience. I have to say it was an awesome time of my life for watching movies.
Thanks for a fun reaction. Since you haven't I definitely recommend watching James Bond movies. It's tough to suggest a single one, even though I have favorites. Some of the early ones have not aged well, but they are still interesting to watch. I would say, since you would be doing it for the channel (or not), start with the very beginning.

    Re Bond Movies:
There are 25 official movies plus two unofficial ones.
The first Austin Powers movie takes a lot from Goldfinger (the third Bond movie) even though the third Austin Powers movie (Goldmember) parodied the name.
Watching the Bond movies adds a whole other level of appreciation for the Austin Powers movies so I'm shocked you've never seen them.

Along with Dr No the other Bond to check out would be From Russia with Love. It's the first appearance of the villain Blofeld and the cat. Also, have you seen the Wayne's World films with Myers and Dana Carvey? They are equally as fun as the Powers movies. FYI, the term O-ring became part of the lexicon after the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. A faulty one on the rocket boosters caused the explosion. It was referenced constantly in the media.

'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid', Steve Martin's pastiche of noir detective movies, which took him several years to write as it is in monochrome and uses many, many clips from old monochrome movies, perfectly edited in for great comedy effect. Also Mel Brooks' 'Silent Movie', where no-one says a word in the whole film - except for Marcel Marceau, the famous mime, who gets one word. .

Have you seen Blow-Up, the 1966 movie with David Hemings and Vanessa Redgrave, directed by Antonioni? It kick-started the Anglo-American New Hollywood Movement that lasted until 78, 77, 79? It was half the inspiration for Austin Powers, since it concerns a famous fashion photog who is as young and famous as any rock star. The other half of Austin Powers was Michael Caine's Harry Palmer spy movies in ths mid 60s. Horn rimmed glasses and a ton of attitude AND Caine played Austin's father in Goldmember. Blow-Up was the art movie that changed the industry. You should see it. Hell, everyone who loves film should see it.

😎👍 This movie is actually a parody of a parody. "Casino Royale" (The one from 1967, not the one from 2006) was a parody of James Bond movies, and this is essentially a parody of "Casino Royale" right down to the inclusion of Burt Bacharach music. It does, however, also contain a couple of direct references to other Bond films. Dr. Evil was largely based on "Blofeld," the villain from "You Only Live Twice" (1967) who was also bald, had a scarred face and was always petting his white cat. The Asian man throwing a shoe at 10:12 is a reference to "Goldfinger" (1964). The original character ("Odd-Job") would throw his derby around like a Frisbee and decapitate people with it. 🎩

1964's Goldfinger was the third James Bond movie. One particular thing from that movie that Austin Powers spoofs is the Asian assassin who throws an article of clothing. In Goldfinger, he threw a hat with deadly sharp edges. In Powers, he wears a similar hat but throws his shoe. And the women's names in this one are sort of take-offs on the name of the main female character in Goldfinger, Pussy Galore.

The only people that can watch this movie and not laugh are Dead(Physically and/or Emotionally)!
Met a girl in the pub last night who said she'd show me a good time......................... Got outside, she ran 100m in 9.72 seconds.
The original Casino Royale with David Niven as James Bond is my favorite "James Bond film"!

The Daniel Craig Bond movies are among the best films in the series, and worth watching. However, if you want to get a good feel for what is being spoofed in the Austin Powers series, you need to watch at least one Sean Connery films and at least one Roger Moore film. I recommend Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me; these will capture most of the spoof’s gag origins.

Bob's Big Boy was one of the first restaurants to serve a double hamburger. Instead of big Mac sauce it used ketchup with sweet pickle relish. 😂
Alotta Fagina was parodying another Bond Girl named Pussy Galore. Mike leaves no joke left behind.
Skinemax was a slang term for Cinemax because of all the skin flicks they showed on their channel.
