Thanks for the great and simple video explanation. Also have had several Harley's, sold them, and thinking bout gettin' the Yamaha sr400. (had a 65 yamaha sr250 in college). Always loved that yamaha 250. Figured the sr400 may bring back good memories. Thanks again...

Great review. That SR makes a great " Scrambler " with mainly garage mods. Hoping to reserct the Bates Baja desert sleds seat for mine. Thanks for details from you.

Excellent comprehensive review, much appreciated! It's pretty rare to find a review of this machine by a guy that's my size, so this is really helpful. Love the USAF sticker, my father was a 20-year AF veteran. I wasn't as smart, I joined the USMC right out of high school. 😁

The engine is actually very sophisticated - dry sump, overhead cam, magneto.

I got a 2014 as a final bike for when I can no longer ride my sport bike and being a YAMAHA it is built to last! Must be a dream to ride for a Harley rider :)

If that was my bike, by the sound of that rattle I'd be checking the cam chain tension and the valve clearances.

Love the retro style and I am a Yamaha man at heart but I wish they give it electric start it would perfect.
I like your video but can I suggest something?
It would much nicer if you do the video in landscape instead of portrait mode because I watch you tube on my TV and now I can only see one third of the screen but in landscape mode I could see the whole screen

I like those little noises my SR also does when I turn it off after a ride. Seems those are material expansion, quite common in 4 stroke bikes apparently

Gday Mate, great review thanks. How did you get used to the lack of power coming from Harleys? I'm thinking of getting one of these as a first bike, but worried I'll want more power after a short time. I'm only 5'6 and about 175lbs. I love the look of them though, and love that they're kick start only.
    Thanks again for the review.
    Cheers

I just knew getting it that its only a 400cc engine and im not going to have really quick pulls comming off the line . With that you won't get yourself in trouble and a great way to learn to ride right before jumping into a bigger cc engine. It would make a great first bike very basic and simple its just about the bike and riding and not a bunch of gadgets. For your first bike highly recommended it learn counter balanceing , cornering, breaking . Thanks for watching i appreciate it.

  • @andtpfack8243

bro you need to check the valve clearance. Im pretty sure they are opened to much. I can her them rattle when you open the throttle. Its not harmfull when they are opened to wide but you lose power. The other case, the valves closed too much destroys a machine pretty quick.

Wrong, the sr 500 came out in 78 and it had disk brakes front and back. I think it changed to o drum in the back in 80 or 81.

The SR500 2J2 with cast wheels and disc brakes front and rear was only available in US/Canada and Australia/New Zealand
The 1978 SR500 released in Britain/Europe had spoked wheels and drum rear brake
The SR500 was produced from 1978 until 1999 or 2000
The SR400 was produced from 1978 for the Japanese/Asian market and is still available in 2024 but only in Thailand
