    The thing about weddings is that you are either trading money or time for each aspect. There are SO many pieces that can be done better if you put in a little extra DIY work, but there are a few that are really not worth it. And can actually cause you way more trouble trying to diy them rather than just leaving them to the pros.
    So I am allllll about getting your hands dirty and putting in the work to create the wedding of your dreams on ANY budget. I say this all the time on my channel - with the resources available online today, you can pretty much plan and execute your entire wedding yourself. Over the years and many many wedding and parties I’ve planned, I have noticed a few things that are SO not worth doing yourself. The point of DIYing is to get something better than your budget can afford by putting in the work yourself. Give this video a thumbs up if you are totally down for crossing some things OFF your list of stuff you have to DIY.

    I DIYed almost everything for my wedding. I LOVE making things. We did the invites and the flowers all ourselves and saved a ton of money. I made my dress too and loved it- and still love it!! We had a friend take photos and we had Panera catered in. The only thing that stressed me out about my wedding was a certain relative who complained and having to invite distant relatives I didn't know. It was just a big community event and it was beautiful. We came in under $6000 and had around 225 guests. Brides, you decide what you want to diy. And remember it's about getting married, not going into debt to impress people. At the end of the night you will be married no matter if you had a picture perfect wedding or not and that is priceless. ❤️

      Oh and I made my cake too!! I made WAAAAY too much and me and my husband "suffered" through eating a ton of it days and weeks (frozen) after the wedding 😁 it was delicious and just what I wanted.

      @@TennesseeGirl101 We used real. We ordered bulk flowers from Sam's club and me and my ladies put together bridesmaid bouquets, centerpieces (assorted vintage-y vases from garage sales and thrift stores) and my bouquet! My bouquet was mostly blush and white roses from Aldi!! 😂😂😂 I just couldn't justify paying someone to put a silk ribbon on a little wire and floral tape... There are like thousands of tutorials on flower crafting!

    My fiance and I did our save the dates and wedding invitation two years early before our wedding day. It was a big relief. We sent our save the dates one years early so people know. We will send out our wedding invitations out 10 months prior so people know not to be busy on that day.
    The rest was easy to do. We started to buy wedding stuff in 2018. Our wedding is May 8th 2021.

    I feel like most people do not understand what you are actually trying to say…I am a wedding planner in Romania, I agree and I know what you are talking about. Of course, if it’s a small wedding, like you said, you can do several DIY projects and it could turn out beautiful and save a lot of money. Even for bigger weddings it’s doable if you know what to do and how to do it, if you enjoy doing all those things and if the friend or the relative who wants to help you has enough knowledge and experience. Otherwise, it could not be a good idea (as we have seen through the years). But of course, it’s everyone’s choice to take that advice or not. But replying to this video and say that “You can’t tell us what we can and can’t do", it’s mind blowing….
    But they don’t know that a wedding planner has seen it all! :) And we want what’s best for every couple. So, prevention is the key to many problems. As Benjamin Franklin said, “an ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure” :)

    I DIYed my own dress, the invites and save the dates, the decor and my bridesmaids and I made our own bouquets the day before and we used the rest of the flowers as more decor around the venue. It was BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely the best way to do my wedding and I wouldn't change a single thing. I say, if you can do it, just do it.

  • @AsToldByKrista
    @AsToldByKrista 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This list is great and I agree with everything ! I’m doing a lot of DIY but mainly with decor items and favors that we’re doing ahead of time. There will be some things we can’t do until the day before the wedding (some involving fresh floral) but this will be very minimal. No complicated projects right before the big day or that would stress me out even more than I already am!

  • @jeremmie8218

    I can see some of these things for big weddings, but my fiance and I are having a very small, intimate wedding (30 people or less). What about weddings like that? I feel like you can DIY A LOT with a small wedding. But honestly, $15,000 for a 300 person wedding?! That's insane!!!

    • @TheUnveiledBride
      @TheUnveiledBride  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This advice is more for the average 150-200 person wedding! If you are having something super intimate, all of this is much more doable! The other option that people don’t really consider is getting creative and hiring non-traditional vendors that are much cheaper rather than doing everything yourself. Like you could totally just get restaurant catering for a 30 person wedding but with a larger wedding you would want someone who knows how to cater a wedding. I think DIYing causes stress and overwhelm if you don’t know what you’re getting into, but like I said - with only 30 people you can definitely do a lot more yourself! 💕 xo

  • @michaelab6070
    @michaelab6070 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Weddings are very expensive, those saying that $15k could cover 300 people easy have never done it. It can be done, but no it's not easy. And depending on where you live, it's nearly impossible. Living in New England, the cost difference between big cities like Boston or the fancy venues around us compared to the woods and barns (although people are ruining those by making them so popular) can be huge. But a lot of venues start at $2-3k and can go up to $10k JUST FOR THE VENUE.

    I am doing almost everything you said not to! including my cake ! , the buffet i know what i want and you only get to pick certain foods from a caterer i can get 10 times the amount of food a caterer would charge for if i do it myself so i dont know how your suggesting it would be cheaper to go to a caterer?? I've asked around 12 different ones who charge per head anywhere from £10-25 per person! Im marrying at a village hall so we have a kitchen to do what we need i get the village hall for 2 days so we have plenty of time to prep im not a lazy bride and like to be productive even on my wedding day! So I dont mind the catering ! We will have my step son in charge of catering as he works in a cafe anyway so he knows what hes doing! The photography will be done by my brother in law to be as hes a professional vlogger, online influencer and photographs buildings ! Hes amazing so why would I pay for a pro?? The bar will also be diy my brother in law was also a bar maid so he is able to make speciality cocktails and serve the drinks at the right amounts! We are asking guests to also bring a bottle or few cans so the fridge stays stocked! We will have a fridge, a small freezer for things like ice cubes etc and then will have a side room for either the buffet or the bar ! And then the huge village hall . Im even doing my invites myself I've already made the draft on my computer will be printing them via vista print and add wax seal etc 😑! What one may want another may not like but for you to say point blank not to do it is harsh! Its the middle of a pandemic and people are struggling including me ive had to book my weddings 15 months out to be able to afford it as it is not everyone has money to spend thousands on food etc when half the family aren't close anyway and probably won't even appreciate the stuff I do ! But I have to invite them for other family members sake ! Having to pay silly amounts of money on people I dont really like i would much rather have a buffet etc and have everything controlled how I like to . A decent photographer would be 1k off my 5k budget yes 5k ! My venue and ceremony is 1.5 k of that! I would have nothing to work with im even getting a second hand dress or one made to fit from china ! Just because you think it's tacky dont mean it is ! 99% of videos I've watched wirh my style of wedding which is boho/rustic burgundy and burnt ornage theme have mostly diy everything including the invites ! Why would I pay £20 per invite when I can pay for the card stock and do it myself add some string and a small pampas stem ! Im capable myself of doing what anyone else would be able to so why wouldn't I? I also have food and hygiene myself for baking and can bake so my cake will be made by me also! £1200 for a wedding cake! No thankyou its only buttercream food coloring and fake dried flowers as the topper isn't really hard tbh ! I could understand if someone wanted an extravagant detailed cake but I want a plain butttercream bark cake! Which is easy to make at home 🏡 🤔 everyone will have there own opinions but I think my wedding will look amazing ! When my mum got married she only had a pro photographer and thats it she did the rest herself this was like 10 years ago! She used paper plates plastic cutlery etc and had a buffet at a pub for the venue was one of the most beautiful weddings I've been ! Im not going to use plastic or paper plates though mine will be glass as it looks nicer ! You can diy some aspects and make other aspects better or add already made up aspects and items to the diy ones ! Makes for a lovely setup !

      Oh and we aren't a family that like to sit down at a party and start eating a hot sit down meal ! We are from West midlands uk and its known here to mostly have buffet food for weddings ! I've only ever been to 1 where they served a steak ! My family would think im bonkers and probably wouldn't even eat it

    I’m surprised at the amount of people on here shocked by how much a wedding costs, all these comments losing their mind over spending $15,000. I had a budget wedding last year, a small guestlist of 100 people and my catering was $11,000 alone. My original 15,000 budget ended up being doubled in the end. Weddings cost money! I know a few people who spent $60,000 + on their average style wedding

      My thing is I don’t even know 100 people well enough that I would want them there. I only have a few family members and family friends I’m close to and a few close friends. If my partner and I get married the same applies to him (only a few close friends and living relatives he would want there). We’ve agreed we want something very small and low cost and if we have a bunch of money use it for a nice honeymoon and anything left over save for a house or something like that.

    Some of this stuff is extra. Like if mima wants to make her famous meat loaf for your wedding WHY NOT?! Like if that’s what you want at your wedding, go for it. And everyone diys their invites. This is the most rich and privileged video I’ve ever seen. And I’m not one to call people privileged. If you want stringed Christmas lights, a cake made from a box with purple frosting and rosemary waterfall themed diy invites go for it. And let mima make her meat loaf if that’s what you want.

    You forgot the most important thing of all, never never never use your dinner plates as part of you decorations. For one it's a health department violation if you expect your guess to carry their own plate to your buffet. Or your wait staff will be required to wash the plates before they can begin to plate your dinner. It's a stupid and ridiculous ideal that every magazine flaunts. Just don't do it.

  • @ruthvansandt9713
    @ruthvansandt9713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol. No alcohol, no eyelashes. The rest - yep totally doing myself or with family help. And invitations are the EASIEST part, lol.
    Well, I’m wearing my grandmas dress and my new mother in law is altering it.
    And my mom’s new sister in law made hers, and even though she hated the dress, it has not strained their relationship. (Even though much of my family is dysfunctional.) that is what you make of it - shouldn’t be an issue if you want someone to do your dress, just be less picky, brides!

Everything she's recommending not to diy (except for what I mentioned above) CAN be done by yourself with a little research.

      Moon Dancer you’d be surprised. She said there was like 300 people at that wedding? Even lower priced caterers will charge you probably $12k for that many people. We are at $10k for 250 and our caterer is very reasonably priced. So $15k for a 300 person event is quite cheap. Most people think they’ll stick to a small budget and then are hit by reality when they actually start planning and seeing how much things cost. I know we were surprised by it.

    I think some of this advice is a little extra....My BFF did their own music using an app and had my husband manage it or “DJ’ed” it, turned out better than my hired DJ(who didn’t have any of our songs) . Can ask a friend of a friend to coordinate ( Id have two people) . My friend asked a lady from church to coordinate who host parties and knows how to run an event. Was amazing (also turned out better than my hired coordinators). I made my cake myself, loved every minute of it! Pinterest worthy. Cost me $20. Invitations was free, sent via email. I don’t really agree with all of these, but I have also hosted large events before.

    When every bakery charges a starting price of $1000 there is no way I would pay that. I made my own cake and I’m sure it turned out better than theirs would have. Also DIYd decor, music on an iPod, my dress, florals, and photos. Everybody told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to. $15,000 Is more than what I am paying for my wedding of 75 people to spend two nights at a rustic summer camp including all food, staff, archery, pool use, hiking, campfires, etc. It's not the traditional route, but it feels like a much better use of $15,000 to me.

    Very crafty person here and I did almost everything diy. Wedding party was outside in my parent's backyard, Costco cakes, simple veggie/meat/fruit trays, and it's pretty amazing what you can do with dollar store plastic table cloths. I am a designer so totally made my own invitations that turned out great! Made my own boquets with fake flowers so I still have the beautiful things. Had a friend in the magazine industry take our photos (beautiful) and another friend do my makeup (we practiced two times before the big day). My sister did my hair but she's a bit of an unusual non-professional talent and again, practiced before hand. My husband is a musician so that's done. My dress is the most expensive thing besides the rings and it was only $250 on Etsy. My mom did the heming but I got the rest of it professionally altered. I just had a bunch of friends take care of everything on the day with assignments pre-planned Wedding (including the rings) was less than $6,000 and it was lovely. Again, pretty crafty here with some good connections but you don't need to spend a lot of money. It's about getting married and the people not about the things and the party.

      My best friend got married July 2017. Pretty much all the decorations, aside from a few things, were diy’ed by her, the bridal party, and her family. Food was made and provided by a few of her cousins who chose to do this as a wedding gift. Cake was done by a professional. Flowers were artificial and arranged together by the bride and her mom. I still have my flowers and have used them as decor. Right now they’re in storage somewhere but definitely a major money saver. Both my friend and her now husband didn’t have a lot of money at the time (she was in school & he had student loan debt; he had just started at his job and hers was minimum wage) so this was great for them. Hair and makeup were done by a few other cousins of hers who are stylists which was another big coat cut down

      When I heard 15k I was like wtf. I can’t see myself dropping that kind of money on a wedding. I want a small wedding with family and close friends. My guess is if and when that happens for my partner it’ll be like 50 people at the absolute max probably. Like I’ll probably already be paying for a few relatives travel expenses since they’re far away so I don’t see a reason to be too extravagant. I’ll probably diy a lot but with help from friends and family who are good at that. My best friend diy’ed all the decor including lights and it looked amazing

    I don't think this is a guideline for everyone. Like for instance the catering -my family is doing this because my dad has experience catering large events and my FH is actually in college for cooking and is being taught about this kind of thing. The wedding cake is being done by myself, and I have done more than one wedding cake for others in the past. Desserts can absolutely be made in advance and frozen and then thawed and it tastes just as good. For a cake, you can absolutely do it yourself but remember not to wait until the last minute. A cake will stand up a few days and even longer if in a fridge. Make the cake part (not iced) in advance and freeze them (make extra layers! If you mess up you have more and if you don't end up needing them you can make cake balls!) And always always always make way more icing than you need if not using fondant. I once made 6 times an icing recipe for a cake and it wasn't enough. Make like 10x or more the recipe you're using) I personally hate piping letters though so I'm planning on buying stencils to write the letters on my cake "and they lived happily ever after" a few words on each tier. But if you don't have experience doing this kind of thing DON'T DO IT!! YOU WILL BE MISERABLE. While my family and I know our way around catering and baking, that doesn't mean it's for everyone! Sams makes great cakes! Also don't know the prices on this but publix also has great cakes and unique flavors! I was actually thinking about getting a plain cake with flavors I wanted and decorating it myself but I just decided to do the whole thing myself.

It came with a template, bows to tie around the invitations.My invitations wound up costing only .17 cents a piece, and nobody could believe I had done them myself. They thought I was lying! I highly recommend buying a kit. Especially if you find them on sale. I had so much extra invitation paper, I even used it to make cut outs for my Corkboard sign in board. My future mother in law and I worked as pro cake decorators, my brother is a brewer who will be supplying the bar, and future mother in law is also a professional DJ. She also knows a lot of people whom she can rally up and make food so we got that mostly covered. But hiring a bartender would be good so my bro isn’t stuck servicing the bar all night, then there’s the matter of keeping the food hot, and getting it set up before the reception which could be difficult. I’ll look into some restaurant catering just in case. Thanks for the tips!

    This is very dependent on the type of wedding you want. I've been to a wedding where they got married in a field and had a potluck reception in a Lion's Club building. No bar or dancing, just a nice dinner. The worst part was actually when the couple disappeared for 2 hours after the ceremony with their professional photographer and a bunch of guests were just sitting there with all the food wondering when we could eat! My parents got married in my grandma's back yard, my dad designed their invitations, my mom made his shirt, a friend of hers made her dress, and another friend made the lace. I had a couple of friends get married last fall who had friends step in to make quite a few things (invitations and flowers, for example) as their gift to the couple, and it was all gorgeous. The dancing to a couple-made playlist didn't last all that long, but that was probably more a result of the guests than the music. We all (including the couple) abandoned ship to make s'mores, get adorned by glow sticks courtesy of the children present, and watch the northern lights on the beach while singing. If we'd stayed inside dancing, we would have missed all that! If a couple wants a lavish, picture-perfect wedding with all of the trappings the modern American wedding industry considers standard, this is probably good advice. But it's also ok to do things differently.

Not many places here allow you to bring in your own catering it was either we had to order from them or from one of their vendors which neither but cheap. My sister has one of tho Fiji Polaroid cameras so we had guests take pictures as they pleased and put them in a little guest book which was cool.

    I’ve never even dated so idk why I’m watching this.. also weddings are so expensive why the heck do ppl practically go broke to have them? Like I get it’s a special memory and some might say it’s worth it but for me I’m just like why don’t ppl save their money and keep it simple.. I’m not a romantic person clearly

      I don’t think it’s “not a romantic person.” I think it’s just common sense. And I agree with you.

    I did my own lashes, my mom did my wedding cake and all of the desserts and treats for my reception and she also made my wedding dress. We picked out all of our own music and put together our own video. We didn’t have alcohol at our wedding so we didn’t have to worry about a bar but most of the stuff she said to not DIY we did and I would not of changed a single thing because it all came out perfect! We also made and sent out all of our invitations ourselves. I mean sometimes it works out for people! My mother in law also made all of the flower arrangements and my mom did the bouquets and boutonnières

    I hate the wedding industry. It is a culture that you need to spend alot or have an extravagant event to have a memorable wedding. Many brides bring on their own stress trying to make everything perfect. At the end of the day you are getting married. People really should focus more on the marriage then the wedding.

    This was the worst video I’ve watched about planning a wedding. Very discouraging and not true. I haven’t had my wedding yet but I had my daughters first bday party with at least 350 people and only spent under 10k. I DIYed almost everything and had family and friends cater, took pictures, and help decorate. And everything was just perfect. It doesn’t matter how nice and fancy things are at your party, the important thing is that everyone enjoys the moment. Wedding/party planners are just a rip off. Why spend extra thousand on someone to plan when you can do it yourself with families and friends to save. You’ll even feel more proud that you did it without having to pay extra. Don’t be discouraged by this video if you want to DIY your wedding or any party, if you can and want to, do it, you’ll feel very good. I’ll guarantee you.
