  • Hello everyone! Welcome back to Almost Definitely Outside.
Today I'm sharing a video I made while I was hiking the first leg of the Leicestershire Round. One of my goals for this year is to explore more of the Midlands - my home - and this was a fabulous place to start! The first leg is called 'Rocky Charnwood' and is a lovely eight-mile bimble from Bradgate Park to Mountsorrel.

PS: I hope you like cheesy transitions because there are a lot of them! You have to amuse yourself when you're hiking alone...

** A note on quality: some of this footage is not the best quality. I turned the quality on my camera right down to help my battery last all day. While I was editing, I realised how low quality the footage really is on that setting! I will find a compromise for next time. On the plus side, my battery really did last all day, so I guess I suceeded?! **

I lived in Leicestershire for years and have walked parts of the route, myself and a friend are now considering walking it in stages so this is useful thanks

Looks like you had a lot of fun filming this one and I get your reasons for wanting to walk such a local trail - many, many people make the mistake of travelling too far for a "good" walk. I regularly have a bit of 'golf course anxiety' and try to avoid those places where possible... I've found that National Trails are clearly signposted but, even on a quiet day, regular footpaths are rarely any more obvious than your trek across that muddy field. I've been known to wander past displeased golfers! I sometimes find the GPS on OS Maps to be less reliable with a downloaded route. This may be an Android issue... But I often have to connect to mobile data to get it going again, even with the downloaded map open.
Looking forward to the second leg. :-)

Walks With Olly Yes it was great fun! And a great example of why you don’t have to go too far for a great day out.
Golf courses are terrifying aren’t they 😂 That ‘shhhh - THWACK’ makes me instantly picture black eyes and lost teeth!
I’m sad to hear you have GPS issues with OS Maps! I have found it to be much more reliable on iPhone than Android so yours is probably a fair assessment.
Hoping to be able to pop out for leg 2 one weekend soon! 😁

Whitwick resident here. I've started to explore our local area and further afield. It's an amazing area. Lived here my whole life and only today explored Charnwood forest on foot! Subbed.

That sounds fab! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm slowly working my way up to heading back out to carry on the rest of the hike after the whole, yanno, virus thing - really looking forward to exploring the rest!

Thanks for your video. I am planning to run the L round this summer ( over a few days ) so it’s great to see your experience before I set off ( probably in May ).

That sounds ace! I'm hoping to have done a good few more of the legs by then so I will try to point out any details that might help you. 😉
