My wife and I travel almost exclusively on Royal Carribean. We’ve been on 8 cruises total, 7 with RC. Just want to say, the CREW does a fantastic job. I know you all work VERY hard and VERY long hours. You are the reason why we sail with RC.
I worked on cruise ships 30 years ago and in essence much is the same except for the technology the crew having their own gym and deck zero, interesting to see it can be used for specific events. Only way to contact home then was to queue up at a telephone kiosk!
Really cool that they have spaces for entertainment for the crew, but when do they have time to enjoy it? As far as I understand, the cabin steward waiters and others work long hours by the time they get any time off; they prob have to do laundry, maybe walk outside on port days, and do errands.
I cannot believe how empty the I95 is. Even at night I have never seen it so quiet. I am loving your videos and cannot wait to return to ships. I really miss it. I think its amazing that you are making good out of a bad situation by doing youtube! Keep it up. I love it!
Great tour! I’ve done the “behind the scenes excursion tour” on many cruise ships and we’ve visited the engine control rooms. For a technology nerd like me it was heaven! On very recent ships, the engine control room is fully computerized and even has a full video wall for all the sensors and whatever the engineers want to see on it.
That computer is called the “DCS” or distributes control system that can handle hundreds of thousands inputs and outputs. The display is called “HMI” or human machine interface and is designed by engineers. The screens are cascaded by priority even though you can access everything from a single screen. I’m sure every ship’s is custom with minor revisions to systems made over the years.
Great show love it, this guy is good....I know it can't be done but would like to see engine rooms,. And can I get coffee any time I want, I really love coffee
Me too Ashleigh. The whole operation of recycling and waste management is pretty impressive. Royal Caribbean has a program called Save the Waves which explains a lot more about their environmental efforts, if you’re interested: www.rclcorporate.com/environment/
@@RileyTench It's basically how garbage is managed in some European countries. Although I suspect that you guys on the ship where a bit more disciplined about it all... While we of course *try* to recycle and stuff sometimes you just end up with screwing up a bit anyway, having too much to deal with in life or whatever... But yeah, most of that non-recycled garbage in my home city is burned. And over in Sweden they're even importing garbage from here in Norway because they're too good at recycling to fill their own garbage burning plants (while we're doing a worse job here).
Enjoyed the behind the scene tour; quite impressive to see those long passageways running the length of the ship. We now know how the crew moves quickly from one end to the other without skipping a beat. Thank you and continue the VLOG journey.👍🏼
David Barnsley He’s home. When I said “it was fun to see the behind the scenes” of his creation process I literally meant it. Got to see how he edits and puts everything together in Adobe Premier... How TH-cam Studio works, all that stuff. I know he already had this video in the works before leaving the ship, so once it got back to Alaska it was just a matter of doing all the editing. It’s nice to have him home for a bit!
James Tench well that is very good news I just watched another video saying a German cruise company has just started up again and it looked very possible So he may be back at work if he wants to I suppose maybe some time next year Bet mum was happy to see him 😍😍👍👍
I never been on cruise ships before I never heard cruise ships have interstate on it I95 lol you can get loss on cruise ships big time it's so big. Cruise ships are fun to be on
I done the " behind the scenes " tour with my son on the independent of the sea about 8 years ago and its amazing. We went below water line , engine control room ( no filming) ,staff shop, bars, kitchens then end up on the bridge with the captain 👍👍
So glad I had a chance to work on RCCL, HAL, NCL & Disney over the years. All those areas are so familiar like an old friend. Wish I'd have had you on NV or SC but I feel like I may never get to work on a ship, or even cruise as a guest, in the future again. Thanks for sharing with everyone else what we know so intimately.
once again Riley a great presentation tour of BEHIND THE SCENES. Love being able to view it. I am a Hotel General Manager so this was most interesting tour.. Thank you!
Loved your video. I worked on the SS Norway in the mid '80s, and granted it was a long time ago, I'm still amazed at the difference in the crew areas. Our "I-95" was on B deck (Biscayne Deck) on the starboard side and was nicknamed Slime Alley. In your vid, when you knelt down to show I-95, my first reaction was, that would never happen on Slime Alley. It was nasty. Port side of B deck was all conehead cabins. The Norway was an old ship then as she was originally the SS France that was built in the early '60s. Times and ships have changed, but working on board a cruise ship is still an amazing experience. Smooth seas.
Hi Riley, thank you for the tour. I've just stumbled onto this video. It's very interesting to see the areas that passengers don't usually get to see on a cruise ship. Just wondering though: are the ceilings quite low in the crew areas, or are you quite tall? It just looks like there isn't all that much headroom.
I’m about 6 feet tall, I would say the ceilings are definitely a bit lower then usual but not to the point you’re whacking your head on stuff. It can definitely get a bit cramped though!

Nothing special in crew rooms just a bunk bed with sinks and a small cabinet for clothes and toilet..its like a special prison room without windows🙂just describing my former cabin.we are all on the bottom of the ship last 2 decks under.
Thanks for this, but you’ve made my heart hurt, too! I truly miss Quantum, my favourite ship. We (my band Horizon) took her out of the shipyard in Germany and over to America, and then the Caribbean for her first operational season-shortly after that, she went to Asia. What a beautiful lady she is ❤️

Thank you for this!! I have always wanted to take a tour of the behind the scenes on a cruise. I have done the tours where they take guests through the kitchens, but mostly for the bottomless mimosas. While watching you go through the different floors, I was reminded of a haunted house my husband and I went through years ago (maybe 2013) on the Oasis. I have no idea where we went but that was pretty cool. Hope you are doing well.
I-95 had dual meanings, so it is quite commonly used on many ships (not just Royal Caribbean). I-95 is a well known Interstate in the US, but it is also the name of the US Border document that non-US crew must carry with them when they go ashore in US ports.
Thanks Riley for a great video! You are a great representative for RCCL and one of the reasons I can't wait to cruise again. How about some hometown videos? Be well.
Really enjoyed this tour. Crew members work so hard and it’s nice to see they have places to socialize and meet up with coworkers. Looking forward to your video about your travel home to AK.
Thanks for your videos Riley, really good to see how your all coping with Covid19 on the Cruise Ships and I see that you finally got home. Great news for you and your family
Amazing job giving us those detals of the ship. I work for the sales team for the UK and I had never seen all of those features the ship. Awesome informativo Riley. Thank You so much. You rock!!!
Happy Tuesday Riley!!! That was really cool to watch. Especially because you didn't have traffic to get in the way for your video. Hope to see a getting home story soon.

the gym looks nicer than the one I pay for monthly!! Nice bar/game room too! Wow free uniforms! I heard you had to pay a portion for them (took the backstage tour on Symphony of the seas). Always love the behind-the-scenes tours. Thanks for sharing.
Great stuff...you rock!
Be well.
Thank you very much Brian. Hope we can all be cruising again some day.
Really enjoyed this tour. Crew members work so hard and it’s nice to see they have places to socialize and meet up with coworkers. Looking forward to your video about your travel home to AK.
Love your videos! If I could go back to my younger days, I’d be a crew member!! Love it!
Thanks Lizzy.
You have held it so together...thank you for sharing you day to day with us all
Thanks for your videos Riley, really good to see how your all coping with Covid19 on the Cruise Ships and I see that you finally got home. Great news for you and your family
Great video! That is the most behind the scenes tour I have ever seen on TH-cam 😊
Thanks!
Thanks much for the entertaining and informative crew tour Riley!
Amazing job giving us those detals of the ship. I work for the sales team for the UK and I had never seen all of those features the ship. Awesome informativo Riley. Thank You so much. You rock!!!
Just discovered your blog... Love your channel! Awesome hosting and tour!
so sad seeing the cruise ship like that...
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. As a fan of cruising I always wanted to see what crew areas were like.
Happy Tuesday Riley!!!
That was really cool to watch. Especially because you didn't have traffic to get in the way for your video.
Hope to see a getting home story soon.
Thanks. It certainly was a unique time to be on board filming this.
Very cool! Thoroughly enjoyed the tour!
Awesome, David... thank you!

Thanks Cassie. Glad you liked the video, and my travel home is the video project I’m working on now. Stay tuned!
Some of the happiest times of my life, working and living onboard this beautiful ship.
I have no idea how this got into my feed, but this was seriously fascinating! Thanks for doing this!

Thank you Armand. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, and glad to see you back! Please do one on what life is like back on land and your future while you await to sail again.
Thanks Chuck... Trying to figure land life out at the moment, but I do have some plans for new videos.
Bloody great Vid Riley, thanks so much for showing us around.
the gym looks nicer than the one I pay for monthly!! Nice bar/game room too! Wow free uniforms! I heard you had to pay a portion for them (took the backstage tour on Symphony of the seas). If you take the tour, you can see the Control room and Provisions and Kitchens, so don't worry, those of us who cruise may have seen it. Wow love the tech/AV control room!! Yes, an Ice Cream Fridge is amaze-balls!! Have a safe trip home! Good luck!
Thank you Joanna. The facilities for crew really are quite nice. No complaints here.
Great job. I have never been on a ship. Am amazed at the length of the hallway!!
