- At the end of the Second World War, there were many executions carried out in former German occupied lands but inside of Czechoslovakia and Hungary pole hanging was used. This was a variation of the gallows in which a hanging post was used and the noose was threaded through a pulley system and a prisoner was suspended from the post and then dropped with the noose secured. Many of these executions were carried out in public, and thousands of people watched pole hangings.

Pole hanging is probably a superior "workmanlike" execution method. The noose is a clothesline like strong but thin rope that cuts deeply into the neck cutting off the carotid artery of blood to the brain causing rapid loss of consciousness for the condemned. At most the condemned person suffers for a minute at most with pole hanging method. But the neck is usually dislocated by the guard that pushes up on the condemned person's chin as their feet are guided down by the lower pulley system rope tied to the feet of the condemned during the short drop. Decapitation of the condemned is always a possibility with American standard drop or British long drop hanging on the gallows. The Czech pole hanging method is efficient, workmanlike and no more brutal or no more inhumane than any other hanging method or execution method. Consider in the United States prison executioners search for a vein at times for up to 40 minutes to administer the drugs for lethal injection.

Timothy Spall’s portrayal of Pierpoint was outstanding and moving.
It was bizzarly inaccurate too.
The actor was too fat, Albert was very lean throughout his life. And yes, there are a lot of inaccuracies.
Every execution method on youtube seems to be labelled ' brutal' .. Is there somehow a ' non brutal' method of execution?

The Spanish Inquisition used the soft cushions or the comfy chair, although it is not clear if they were always fatal. Monty Python has a good documentary about this subject.

In Karl Hermann Frank’s execution video, the rope that was tied around his feet was clearly pulled on after he fell by the guards behind the pole to further strangle him. You can clearly see his legs being stretched.

How can searching for a vein be inhumane? It happens all the time at the doctor’s office. Unless you’ve got a person doing it that has zero medical experience. But I’d think they would.

A minute of suffering in this way is hardly trivial.
A bunch of people broke in the jail here and took out a prisoner and took him down to the end of 3rd street by the tracks and hoisted him up a telegraph pole. He kept hanging on the pole, so they let him down and tied him up and pulled him up again. After he was dead, this lady doctor skinned him and had a doctor bag and a pair of shoes and a purse made. She cut his head off, boiled it and had an ashtray made out of the top of his skull. It sat on the Nebraska governors desk for years. The shoes, bag and skull can be seen still today on display at the museum at Rawlins Wyoming. His name was Big Nose George. Bits of him still show up occasionally today.

The Museum of Communism in Prague has a replica of a hanging pole with a description of how the condemned was strangled with this method. It was not a quick death.

It was used shortly after WW2. But Commies soon abandoned "pull" part and let condemned simply slowly to suffocate and later swapped it for simple short-drop with trapdoor.

It is actually a combination of short fall and pole hanging. At the same time as the prisoner falls, two prison officers suddenly pull his legs down. This then breaks the neck and closes the carrotis. The technology itself has been known for a long time. There are descriptions from 17/18. Century from England, in which relatives pressed the legs down in order to quickly end the suffering of their loved ones.

The British Long drop method took seconds. Pierrepoint had it down to around 14 seconds from start to finish.
It seems to me there were a number of much more brutal methods. One of the worst I can think of is the Obliette. Another is being beaten with rods. But, Crucifixion is possibly the worst although not as long to die as some others.
