Considering the differences in sound, time, technology, and the price gap between the two models I don't see any justification to upgrade to the newer one.

Increíble pero sí. Acabo de comprar una x3 nueva. A estrenar. Sabeis si debo hacerle alguna actualización de software o algo? O no hay que tocarle nada en ese aspecto?
This was a great comparison for me. I keep hearing about guitarists just using Helix boards but I actually bought a second hand Pod X3 Live from a pawn shop here in New Zealand for only $180nzd and judging by this video I don't feel like I'm giving up anything at all - I feel that if I just spend the time and get the maximum performance from my X3 it's going to be just as good for me. I don't feel like I need a Helix at all. Also as good as this video was I don't think the poster was using either board anywhere near their sonic potential....Thanks for the post. Made me very happy.
This is the opposite of a good comparison, please listen to the X3 on dozens and dozens of other videos, Not a single one sounds like this guy. I have both the Helix and X3live (as well as the XTlive and HD500x). I tried to duplicate the sounds in this video and the ONLY way Icould duplicate it on the DualRectifier, Mark2, JTM45 was to turn the gain to ZERO on the X3 or turn the guitar volume all the way down to barely a signal. Enjoy the X3 in NZ. NZ is on my Bucket List to boat from North Island to South Island. I lived in Australia for 3 years in my early teens... When we were moving from Australia to Italy, we had planned to spend a week in NZ, but something significant derailed those plans and unfortunately have not been back to that side of the world.
@@conspiracytocommit Well when the world returns to normal make sure you come here my friend. Your countryu is pretty amazing too I have many wonderful memories of many places there - tearing around Sorrento on a vespa, going to Capri on a whim and going to Pompeii the next day. Yes i think ill just squeeze all the juice out of my X3 that I can - and hey i can always augment it with some DAW plugins or fool around with Guitar Rig 5. Stay healthy and safe.
So...if you just added a boost pedal and maybe another eq its 99% as good as the helix.. could you do a video for x3 with boost if its available to you?
There is a reason why they discontinued x3 live and after that they made a worse pod the HD for the same price. X3 live is the real ADN of the helix. Helix is awesome but x3 live do the job as well, you just need to tweak it. Still, x3 live did better than helix in some presets, but most of them are more balanced in the Helix cause they did a better job in the creation of them, i think x3 live is as good in sound and for me is pro level entry and i am glad i have one. Just put a Mooer Radar on x3 live and a wah pedal and for the money you have an Helix on steroids. You could have done a better job on sound in the x3 live, i only record with mine and i can surely match that Helix any day of the week, and surpass it even.
Anyone use custom settings/ I cam adjust both of those line 6 to sound perfect/ its all about how you can adjust/ how ypo can hear the sound and nothing more/
Helix sounds so much better, for the Fender it has a warmer mid range tone, for Mesa Boogie obviously it was premature to insert this tone patch in the X3 live but with Helix they managed to build it around 90% accurate IMO. I still own the X3 live however Helix is next in line for me!
...giving us a sharper visual picture of the Helix won't make me forget the X3 is not the dull box we are hearing here ... and: yes, lot of brilliance is nice for a me in front of the mirror job, but not necessarily what we need in the mix. So in the end there will sure be a chance to use the Helix and be happy, but in my world it is not what we like to believe is true advantage
@AGGIO You can have equal or better tones with Pod X3 than Kemper, helix or Ax Fx, but as you say it takes time is not an immediate result, since it takes time to learn to equalize correctly and get the most out of Pod X3, but after you know how to use it in the right way you do not go back I spent several years and now I can have the high gain tone I want and it does not sound thin or artificial but like the original tone. If you want I can help you and you will see that you do not need more to have a quality tone.
Butcher _ 03 I just bought an x3 live and am trying to figure it out. Did you learn mostly from trial and error, or did you have some kind of resource?
@@Stardust31b Hi friend I'm glad you are a new owner of that wonderful pedalboard. I'm looking to see if I buy one or two more in good condition to have them backup in case it damages mine. Bro the truth this pedalboard needs a lot of knowledge of mixing and handling of its analog part, to understand how to get each tone in the right way, there is not a tutorial that teaches everything or a page where they show secrets, I read many forums about the Pod X3 Live as well as real amplifiers, pickups, etc. So I understood how each amplifier works and effects in real life in order to bring those attributes to its digital counterpart. Now with my technique I get 90 to 99% of most high gain tones and clean tones. What tone do you like? And if you want to sound better than Kemper or Ax Fx or helix, I can sell you the tones by working directly with the sound of your guitar and your full Rig. Unlike most companies that sell generic tones and they never consider what their customers use.
Hi, yes There's difrent options. 4 method cable (fx loops) or Yo can go to global setup and select Power amp in. Or you can simply stay on studio out. Just create a patch whitout amp simulation, and choose the stompobox of your choice. Lo

Woa, everone has strange ears. The Helix sounds MUCH better to me, and I love my Pod X3 live. I don't have money for the Helix, but all the comments that say it sounds better than the Helix... seriously? The Pod X3 sounds just dull and smothered compared to the Helix, and that is not a personal taste. I am very impressed by how people are so subjective that they can't hear such a huge difference. Still, maybe not a fair comparison, I'm not sure.
X3 Live is cheap...with some eq, it works.....Tech is leaving old tech in the dust....but X3 is still worthy of young players, and hey, I like having an extra effects looper .

Really appreciate this video. It's peculiar because many sounds on the X3 will be more favorable, but the Helix is newer, and newer is always supposed to be better, right? LOL. Sadly, we are taught not to trust what we hear and all gets more complicated.
@Geoffrey Merrifield That is called misleading advertising, and about valuing a product, we must bear in mind that companies like Line 6, Fractal, Kemper etc are not musicians who seek our benefit, but on the contrary their goal is to earn more money so the business works . And many musicians are so naive that they sell them smoke through famous musicians or with advertising and they buy it, spending thousands of dollars on something they did not really need at first. With old tools and much cheaper, you can get the same or even better results, but we know few. Let's take advantage of the possibilities we have available and enjoy their benefits, which in the end is the most important thing.
First let me start off by saying I’ve never touched a Helix, Axe FX, Kemper or any of these other high-end guitar culture phenomena. Just not in my budget, and not really accessible. I have been an unabashed POD lover since the Bean 1.0, although I was not as impressed by the XT generation (I do have a Bass XT, but it serves a peripheral function in my rig. I think, though not “HD”, the X3 was the peak of the POD form factor and feature set. Paying to play through the HD model packs in the following generation felt like a cash grab, and ran totally contrary to the very idea behind the POD. Do any of them really hold up at this point? Matter of opinion - I love, love, love the vast feature set of the X3, and it is an integral part of my rig, although I find the pairings of the modeled amps I use are becoming more and more unexpected. What this comparison does illustrate well, however, is the fact that every version of the Bean has sounded simply good with the amp model alone, but they really get multidimensional once you add proper effects chains, and tweak them to accentuate the models’ strengths. It’s been that way since the Bean Mk I. This may sound like a no-brainer, but a lot of TH-cam POD demos seem to leave this out, and it’s a fundamental element of the devices’ design and features. Small thing, but it makes a decent modeler into an awesome tone generator. We grow when we can discuss our shared lives without feigning superiority and shitting all over the joy of other people, just to give ourselves a feeling of importance. Let’s play nice together, and give every piece of equipment we have access to a chance to show what it can do. I’ve had quite a few revelations lately about my 15+ yo X3, just by approaching it with fresh ears and no preconceptions. Let’s just make some music - the world needs our kind of joy and beauty, if we can get past our own egos 😊
it looks like helix makes you play better.. helix has a stereo sound while pod x3 live has the mono. I am trying to utilize my pod x3 live for a better sound after 10 years.
I got both and it’s day and night .. the X3 could sounds good and decent .. but the helix is more natural has more dynamic and sounds close to the original model it built on !
X3 holds it's own against the helix and then some. 2 generations behind It's a shame these units get outdated and lose value so quickly when they have lots still to offer .
I just picked one up for 200 bucks I feel it was well worth it.. Original box with all the packaging i was ecen able to register it with line 6 lol not that it means a damn thing a decade later
@@cncnmore4505 Hi, it means something. You can use it as a dongle for the Software "Pod Farm II" what you get for free if you got the Hardware. And the software is really worth it. Increíble pero sí. Acabo de comprar una x3 nueva. A estrenar. Sabeis si debo hacerle alguna actualización de software o algo? O no hay que tocarle nada en ese aspecto?
Helix was in stereo and X3 is in Mono,
What a fair comparison ???
bouth pedalboars are conected the same .
STEREO.
X3 is still a great solution!
Made me very happy.
gl3nnium hi what’s the latency of the x3?
In general Helix sounds a bit more transparent than X3 which is more usable for recording purposes
Both setting volume, bass, mid etc are same ?
So...if you just added a boost pedal and maybe another eq its 99% as good as the helix.. could you do a video for x3 with boost if its available to you?
Um...bump the mids and hi's a bit on the x3 and they would pretty much be identical
podrías compartir los pataches del pod x3? saludos gran comparativa
Line 6 Variax 600 & POD X3 live - єто фантастические возможности;)
I love my X3 but I have to give this shoot out to the Helix. A fuller sound to my ears. Way too expensive for me but it is what it is.
Volume differences skew the comparison. Sill somewhat useful.
Both models feature useable tones. And to be honest, the best way to evaluate each is to hear it in a mix.
Nice! No need to upgrade my X3 Live!
it sounds to me,almost like comparing tube vs solid state , x3 sound more tube and helix sound more solid state
X3 is a great pedal. But the helix is much easier to work with. Maybe in 10 years I’ll buy one.
@AGGIO
You can have equal or better tones with Pod X3 than Kemper, helix or Ax Fx, but as you say it takes time is not an immediate result, since it takes time to learn to equalize correctly and get the most out of Pod X3, but after you know how to use it in the right way you do not go back
I spent several years and now I can have the high gain tone I want and it does not sound thin or artificial but like the original tone.
If you want I can help you and you will see that you do not need more to have a quality tone.
Butcher _ 03 I just bought an x3 live and am trying to figure it out. Did you learn mostly from trial and error, or did you have some kind of resource?
@@Stardust31b
Hi friend
I'm glad you are a new owner of that wonderful pedalboard.
Hi do you know how to run the x3 live so i have the sound of my real amp but the fx from the x3 live.
Hi, yes
There's difrent options.
4 method cable (fx loops) or
Yo can go to global setup and select
Power amp in.
Or you can simply stay on studio out.
Just create a patch whitout amp simulation, and choose the stompobox of your choice.
Lo
@@kinotorres i tried the 4 cable method and that just gives the sound from the x3 live, what do you mean with studio out i can only see live out and fx loop and guitar input
but yes i only want the x3 live to only make the stompbox sounds to my real amp so i can get phaser chorus and flanger.
X3 low gain or clean sounded as good if not better than the helix to me. I did prefer the helix on the higher gain models.
Que gran video!!! Podrías pasar los Patches de la x3?
Bajate la app monkey y el podfarm de la página de line6.. Esta pedalera es muy sencilla de Equalizar con el podfarm.. Con las perillas es un dolor de cabeza 🤪
the helix is good for modern metal.. i still have my pod x3
X3 Live is cheap...with some eq, it works.....Tech is leaving old tech in the dust....but X3 is still worthy of young players, and hey, I like having an extra effects looper
.
Whoa dude, someone has different opinion than you, wtf?
x3 sounds much better in the dual mode, specially if you struggle a little matching cabs
Oh Dear ,....!
My X3 Live still sounds full and rich,... yours appears to have a few issues.... it doesn't sound like mine.
Seriously,.. I don't have the same fizzy background on mine which yours appears to have....
Can you please share your presets? Seems not so many people use this device nowadays and theres lack of community support. I would like to have some new presets to try. I can also share my own presets as well
@@thedisbelieverdoom Hi' Doom,... That's not really an option right now as I've got it setup to record BASS for our bands next album... once the kit is setup it needs to be consistent so I avoid changing.. Best option is to go to : line6.com/customtone/ and you'll find a multitude of user tones for download.

This is very helpful Thanks a lot
I have pod x3 live connected directly into a return plug on marshal vs8080, i am having problem with clean tones, when i pick any power chord sometimes sounds like little buzz, can someone give me an advise ?
try lowering the drive. also chek you pick ups.
Close my eyes then listen.
I prefer the x3live than the Helix.
Are these stock sounds or tweaked?
Both sound fine to me!
Actually the Pod X3 sounds more like a real amp IMO .... Helix has more details in comparison but that way is more HiFi sounding coz real amps doesn't have such amount of details due to the speakers EQ curve
Hello, thx for the comparison, I’m a pod x3 owner and I like it but wonder maybe upgrade to helix. I like some sounds you have on the x3. Could you share it with me. I have some nice tone too.
Thx for your video !
Really appreciate this video. It's peculiar because many sounds on the X3 will be more favorable, but the Helix is newer, and newer is always supposed to be better, right? LOL. Sadly, we are taught not to trust what we hear and all gets more complicated.
@Geoffrey Merrifield
That is called misleading advertising, and about valuing a product, we must bear in mind that companies like Line 6, Fractal, Kemper etc are not musicians who seek our benefit, but on the contrary their goal is to earn more money so the business works .
Not a big fan of Line 6. But,these items sound pretty good
x3 live is overcompressed
Its over compressed if you make it over compressed
God!! Patchs x3 live?
X3 Forever..
Do you have the X3 Live patches on line?
Add1
My x3 live doesn't sound that dull!Stop being biased(and manipulating EQ)just cause you own a Helix👀
Heroes del silencio? helix clean sounds are much more organic
Link patch download?
it looks like helix makes you play better.. helix has a stereo sound while pod x3 live has the mono. I am trying to utilize my pod x3 live for a better sound after 10 years.
X3 is better for me ! Also i like more the oldest sound !
I got both and it’s day and night .. the X3 could sounds good and decent .. but the helix is more natural has more dynamic and sounds close to the original model it built on !
Hey, nice video. I need your help can you provide me pod x3 live service manual?

kinotorres sorry if im distrubing you, but need service manual. Waiting for you reply.
I use it still tody because it's just good. It's like having the pod x3 again as a vst-Instrument. And its visually nice. you see the effect pedals and cabinets and so on.
put these into a clean channel of a marsghall valvestate or lany tube fusion n they sound better
Pod x3 the best
Pod x3 live is the original line 6 flagship
That Line 6 POD X3 LIVE is very badly set.
Without a doubt the Helix sounds beautiful, knowing how to set the x3 takes time.
GREAT VIDEO
So you’re paying for prettier make up?
definitely not the best setting for the X3, just check Glen Delaune's tones
Hay una diferencia notable, sólo que la helix es muy cara..
x3 live forever !!!!!!!
Suenan mejor la distorsión en la x3 muy seca la helix
X3 is best
Needs more work programing both pedals, no fair comparison this way.
El pod,suena mejor que eso
HELIX
Mejora en tocar
Helix by a mile.
Idk ...some places its better some its not...used market value id still keep a grand in my pocket and go with the x3
Dude, get your tone dialing act together. Those were some awful tones all around. Sounded like a cheap single coil guitar with a broken tone knob.
Dude come on, X3 sounds horrible. X3 is horrible . If you play a full chord with high gain you can't hear all the notes in your chord ! Granted it's good for lead stuff but it doesn't do well with chords
funny enough thats exactly the sound I am after, and plan to rule the world with it.
