This is a wonderful video - very well done. I really felt the emotions come through. I’ve watched all episodes available here in the US and, as I don’t speak French, have a couple questions am hoping someone can answer. Am I understanding correctly that Nicholas Gob is undergoing cancer treatment? If so, is that why there are so few episodes these last seasons? To give him time to rest? Or, is this typical of French shows? Either way is totally fine - just want to understand the difference in US TV compared to French TV. Also, wondering…spoilers ahead… . . . . Why doesn’t Antoine remember the painting and little boy he and Florence talked too? I believe it was said in the mummy episode he lost a week’s worth of memories, but the painting episode happened long before that. Did I miss something in the translation?
Thank you so much, I'm so happy you enjoyed the video, and that you watched the show despite not speaking French! ❤️ (aren't there good English subtitles available somewhere though?) Now to answer your questions: - fear not, Nicolas Gob did have cancer like 15 years ago and has (as far as we know, but he recently opened up about it in an interview so I guess he'd have mentioned if he was facing it again) fully recovered ever since. - The extremely short length of the seasons isn't specifically French either, our TV shows usually have between 8 to 14 episodes per season, just like pretty much other countries' standards I believe... in this case, I think it's mostly because writing the cases and interlacing them with the art history takes time? I personally find the show's writing extremely well executed, and I assume quality takes time so maybe they're taking that extra writing time, idk. Also I think the show is pretty expensive to shoot because of all these prestigious filming locations, and France 2 is a publicly funded channel so the budget might not be indefinitely extensible? I wish we had more episodes per season too though! - Antoine does remember the painting with the little boy, he actually unearths it from his closet in episode 6x02 when Florence's therapist tells him about a painting that would be a bond between him and Florence. Although the thing is, Florence never told him HER history with the painting, so he's never known that they both talked to the painting as children. May I ask what made you think that he didn't remember? I hope this helped, feel free to ask if you have further questions! ❤️
@@bourbon-ontherocks thank you for your detailed response! I appreciate all the information. I didn’t know the show airs on a publicly funded channel. I can only imagine the cost of filming in Paris and at all the locations they use. The writing is superb and I would rather have a small number of great episodes than what we typically get here in the US - 22 episodes per seasons, but more than half of them are “filler”, meaning they don’t move the overall plot line ahead or add to character development. Some shows here are going away from that, but those are mostly on paid tv services (Netflix, Showtime, HBO, etc). I will take quality over quantity any day! Regarding the painting, I may have inferred Antoine knew about Florence’s history based on the interaction at his father’s apartment. When the little boy talked to Antoine and Florence. Didn’t Florence refer to him as Adam? Maybe I just thought she did and then decided, in my head, that she and Antoine would have talked about it afterwards. I sometimes like my head’s version of the show better - Juliette never existed and Antoine and Florence are happily together. Well, as happily as those two can be - they need to always bicker about something, otherwise they wouldn’t be my favorite duo! 😃 Thanks again!
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that since the show is somehow a giant ad for Paris and French museums, they sort of get a discount when filming at the Louvre, but I remember an article about when the show booked the Versailles Palace for the season 7 shooting and it was, erm, not cheap lol! But yeah, I guess it does impact the number of episodes, although I'd point out that the show's episodes last 90 minutes, which is twice the standard length for this kind of show, so really we have 4 episodes per season, which is not that bad actually... Oh I know about filler episodes! I don't really mind them if they're cool and if I'm into the show's universe, but it's true, the French shows I've watched, which aren't many, seem more plot-driven. I don't recall Florence calling the little boy Adam, haha, if you give me a timecode of the moment you're referring to, I can take a look and translate her lines for you, but I think it's pretty explicitely established that they never talked about it afterwards, and Florence never confessed to Antoine talking to the painting as a kid too... 😭
@@bourbon-ontherocks I rewatched and it’s not Adam, it’s Jean. I think I must have made up a new name for him. Geez, my memory is getting bad! Also, Florence doesn’t call him that but the painter tells her the name. It’s at the 51 minute mark of the 2nd part of Picture Imperfect. I recently subscribed to a streaming service that has this show and tons of others. Great subtitles! Am going to rewatch the series and see what else I misunderstood and/or rewrote in my head. 🤪 Season 7 isn’t available yet, but they said it will be available before the end of the year. Eagerly anticipating!
