    This is one of my favorite projects--full stop. If you truly can play it, I highly encourage doing so: store.steampowered.com/app/2160220/Shipwrecked_64/
    AND a Makeship plush just dropped for Bucky! www.makeship.com/products/bucky-beaver-plush
    This video is in two parts: a playguide, and a typical Night Mind dive on the lore and critical examination of the work. Please use the chapter system here on TH-cam to come and go as needed. Please expand this comment for a few elements I didn't manage to fit into the video (SPOILER WARNING):
    +
    [Bucky & the Mirror]
    The mirror that shows up at random is not random--this is definitely a theme piece that I feel portrays Brandon's disgust at himself while succumbing to infection from the organic material on the island. When you see the mirror, it's some kind of clue that Brandon felt a connection to whatever was occurring in that location in the game (it shows up twice in relation to Olivia, who he tormented before fully turning). The mirror showing up in the tunnel, reflecting the heart, seems like a touch to symbolize how much the organic matter's influence had simply overtaken him in a way he was conscious of. What we really have to ask about the mirror is why is shows up in that blue room in Walter's waterway... again, there's something about that wolf on the bed that's being shared with us.
    [The Heart]
    This is a simple one--it's a sign of the life existing in the cave system of the island. Now, is it literally a giant heart inside the island belonging to one continuous organic mass? Possibly! I think, whether literal or not, it's meant to inform us in a standard playthrough that there is a huge form of life inside the island, and Bucky recognizes it because Brandon was the most conscious while suffering from infection (that we know of).
    [Subtle Writing Briliance]
    The above elements are just more examples of the sheer brilliance in subtle writing Squeaks incorporated into the design for Shipwrecked 64 to serve storytelling. These pieces are quiet, mysterious, and are presented in such a way that we're meant to think about them and piece them together. The same applies to the awesome sub-storyline of Connor's cruelty to Mark by way of Harley, and how Layer 2's existence may have much more meaning than we realize. This is one of the highest points of praise I tried to convey within the video: showing, not telling, and allowing the players to think about things and make connections that give those "aha!" moments.

Then suddenly you think you saw something on the side but then you doubt yourself. And then it happens more and more and it really makes you feel like the game is emerging out of the screen towards you. A beautiful bit of in-game work.

    This will probably get lost in the sea of comments, but thank you so much for this. I'm the voice actor for Mark and it blows my mind to have a project I've been apart of for the last 2 years be this deeply analyzed and appreciated the way that it has. Especially from you, MatPat, and everyone else. It's made me so happy over the past month seeing the reception that this project has gotten from all these content creators I've been obsessed with since I was 13 years old. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
    But other than that, with the part in the end where it's your PSA for creators to never give up - honestly, that's always been the most gratifying part for me. Other than Shipwrecked blowing up on TH-cam and all of that: In my heart, I've been the most proud of watching Squeaks grow as a creator for the past 2-ish, years, and I'm so happy I was able to help him get here by voicing Mark. Squeaks has always been transparent and passionate with me throughout all of Broadside Beach and Shipwrecked, and I admire so deeply that this all came from a place of genuine love for horror and ARGs. I've had so many conversations with him over the years about all these game design elements he's excited to implement, what he wants to tackle next with the story, and especially all of his fears and worries about this project. It warms my heart seeing him get his flowers for something he's worked so hard for.
    I'll admit, I've been jaded on the aspect of creation over the past couple of years myself, but watching this kid that I met when he was 16 take Shipwrecked to this level has inspired me more than anything. Anyway, thank you for making this video. And thank you for helping people like Squeaks, myself, and millions who watch your videos fuel their creative passions.

    SPOILERS;
    Regarding the Starling Conversion, I intepretted the language here differently. This is how I understood it:
    1. They found the weird organisms on the island.
    2. They did a couple experiments with rats to find out what it was.
    3. The BURIED BODIES of the victims merged with the organisms in the soil and rose out of the ground. That's why 'when the three victims emerged, it was in our best interest to fix that.'
    They were SHOCKED to see the bodies come to life, it wasn't intentional. They were trying to cover up the deaths by burying the bodies, but the bodies came back on their own.

    • @iwannabeyahtzee8056
      @iwannabeyahtzee8056 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +91

      I will say I like this interpretation a lot more. The idea that this wasn't even an intentional process at first and they just buried the bodies, only for them to come burrowing back up out of the ground, Broadside's past mistakes LITERALLY refusing to stay dead and buried? Awesome!
      Buuuut if that's what the original creator was going for then they could have made it a bit more clear. All this stuff with the innovation lab makes it sound like it was an intentional process from the very beginning as a way of covering up the murders, not a desperate attempt to disguise the fact that they have four walking corpses on their hands that they don't know how to get rid of.

    Shipwrecked feels like it’s an evolution to the Mascot Horror genre. Rather than the setting be “abandoned building with children’s mascots that want to kill you” it has the anthropomorphic game characters be the horrors

      it's just the Lost Episode Creepypasta archetype without the lost episodes

I think Connor is actually really well written, because despite the fact his actions are justified, there's tons of hints that show he was very bitter, pretentious, and at times vindictive and insensitive to the people around him. • @TechnicolorShortie
    @TechnicolorShortie 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1129

    I feel like the Starling Conversion video might have been done the way it was on purpose, and if my theory is correct, it needs to be as out of place as it feels. All throughout much of Shipwrecked you have Connor hiding pieces all over of Broadside's dark secrets, and each time they're all relative to information he knows or placed there. The way the Starling video is found isn't the same as the others. I don't think Connor made that part, I think the Vandal did.
    We saw that the Vandal addressed Mark on a personal level, especially finding the vacation home and saying Mark can't hide from him there. The Vandal has been after Mark, and I think he added his own touch to what Connor and the others produced in his own way. Separating it into three pieces gives me a suspicion that the Husk provided it, but in three pieces relative to the three dead actors. Whatever is happening, the Vandal had a bone to pick with Mark, and if he's been vandalizing places, why not the game itself?
    The video is an info dump, not as organized as everything else Connor hid inside. Everything else came together to create a story, a rug pull to reveal the beating heart of the company, except that single part. It reveals something that Connor likely had no way of knowing, but the Vandal would. Or if not the Vandal, what of the Husk, who hasn't been shown to be very direct with its information until you earn it. Like splicing three pieces together.
    Merely a theory, but with everything beforehand coming with a nuanced sense of purpose, it's hard to believe Squeaks just slipped right there that severely without a reason. The other mistakes he made were either subtle or instances of improperly conveying the key to a puzzle. It's possible, of course, but I think I just want to give him the benefit of the doubt after doing so much right.

    • @Augmentationed
      @Augmentationed 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +127

      You know, I left a comment myself about how I would have liked the Starling video better if it had been made by an unreliable witness like Connor as some sort of exposure piece....but it does also strike me as purposefully out of place in the same breath.
      I'm not sure, but I do like your suggestion with the Vandal having a hand in some of it that perhaps seems out of place. It adds another layer and gives him a bit more purpose.

    • @OzTheHost
      @OzTheHost 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +66

      @@Augmentationed i also relate with the sentiment, there's just something(s...?) that feel so out of place in a way that feels purpuseful, for me was that the image of one of the victims was wrong, and (if im not misremembering) it was from a completely different person we hadn't seen before, but also i didnt play the game and only saw what was showed in this video so idk,
      it makes sense to me that the vandal could be responsible for this, since its kinda implied that it is a starling, and that it has a connection, or access ( maybe thru nefarious means) to the developer tools or platforms, or maybe the vandal and connor had some form of relation or contact, perhaps due to a mutual hatred for mark.
      I would also like to comment that, although mark was kind of an ass, he didn't strike me like a "head of a secretly evil and misterious company that experiments on biological entities with a convoluted and complex front" kinda guy, so i think that the reveal of the starling conversion experiments and so were a little out of nowhere for me

      This is the conclusion I came to. Like the way this video is done is way too jarring compared to everything else that I am willing to believe this was made like this on purpose. Like it wouldn’t make any sense for Connor to even know this info. It makes much more sense for Vandal to know since if he was made in that lab he would know the lab exists.
      Also Vandal definitely seems to be more straightforward and simple in his confrontations. I can also buy the Husk too tho, with it being split up into 3 parts.

The same thing happened to Brandon, he was, by all intentions and purposes, the first Starling. He died due to an overdose and Broadside decided to both cover up his death by making him the first starling, and also testing the biomass’ effects on human bodies.

Petscop, Rapid Eyes, Diminish, each time the idea was right there that you could push the audience engagement further by actually releasing a game and letting players play with it. I know, actually making a game is long, tedious, hard, and expensive, so it's not like I begrudge anyone for not going the extra extra mile, but on the other hand indie development is easier than ever before to attempt and I figured it was only a matter of time before someone actually released a video game for their project.

As Nick pointed out, Shipwrecked is phenomenal, but by it's nature of committing to ARG homework it will alienate a more casual audience, not to say that isn't worth doing sometimes though, case in point Shipwrecked. I guess there's just a number of ARG stories where the hook is "this game has a story to tell", and in a case like Diminish yeah the point is it's only meant for one person, but if the hook is "the game has a story to tell", I've felt for a while now it'd be a natural given that somebody just gives the player the game and trusts them to figure out the story.

      If this is the case, then I’d say that they should’ve used “organic” and “inorganic, because the delineation between living and non-living is the same as alive and dead.
      A rock can’t be a “non-living rock” because rocks _can’t be_ alive

      @iwannabeyahtzee8056 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      If the creator *meant* organic they should've used the word organic. It can seem pedantic but in a work as complicated and multifaceted as this, word choice is important.
      Living and organic are similar but they aren't exactly the same and can have very different meanings depending upon the context. It's confusing, is all I'm saying.

    Loving the video so far, but I think the logical plot hole around 2:09:03 could be easily explained if there were two meetings, one at the Broadside office where the presentation was given and drives are swapped, and another meeting at Cogware's office where Mark informs them they're cutting funding. That's why Connor kicks Mark out at the end as opposed to Connor leaving, because they're at the Cogware office.

    The story of Squeaks also makes me think about Zeekerss, the developer of Lethal Company, who started out making stuff in Roblox when they were *12.* And Lethal Company itself launched, becoming a best-seller example of emergent horror-comedy, Zeekerss was 21.
    While some might not have much hope for future generations, art like Shipwrecked and Lethal Company prove that, with the availability and accessibility of all these tools, younger people can make compelling art, even without a college degree. And honestly, knowing what they've made so far, I'm pretty excited to see what else they've got up their sleeves.

    02:01:41 -- The Broadside Drive bit doesn't need to be a plothole. He could have been meeting with any number of other people at Broadside BESIDES Mark, presuming it's a colossal animation studio and not just, like, a single guy. They could have been meeting with marketing, with lawyers to deal with copyright issues, or just some lower level accounting flunkies looking to pad out the studio's promises for Q3.

    • @iancharest7655

      I believe the shouting match takes place at Cogware Studios, months after Connor leaves Broadside with the drive. There must have been AT LEAST two separate meetings.

    • @StoryDood
      @StoryDood 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It's also possible that Connor was there at the studio for *multiple* days before the eventful meeting occurred. Maybe Broadside flew him out a bit earlier than the meeting was slated, they *were* going through a rough patch financially, lots of lawyers and accountants that Mark has to meet with, and Cogware isn't that high on his priorities, so Connor was given some temporary office there while he waited for the meeting. The drive swap happened, Connor went back to his computer and saw the drive wasn't his but decided to snoop on it a little, and thus you get his recording, then soon after you get the shouting match.

    • @Auldous
      @Auldous 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      My personal opinion on the timeline when it comes to the drive.
      The first log would be Connor talking about getting back to work after the unspecified hiatus. At this point he mentions a meeting coming up with Mark to show him the progress they have made.
      The next log would be Mark talking about cutting the funding for the game. I feel like his comment here about not having seen anything from Cogware in months lines up with the hiatus that Cogware was forced to take. This would be when Mark puts the deadline on the studio, the drives are mistakenly swapped, and the Plaza segment is scrapped from the main game, prompting the "Hate Mark" poster.
      At this point, I get kinda headcanon-y, but I feel the established lore of the characters supports this. I think Connor, after being told the game needed to be shortened to support a much earlier release date then initially planned, started digging through the Broadside drive to find blackmail against Mark, to leverage back the original release date, and this is when he found the actual evidence of Bucky's rampage. This is the point when he realises that he can't do anything to leverage against a company willing to cover up murders, and he records the log about "not feeling safe around that man". At first he reacts with grief and anger, which leads to the lashing out at Mark in the meeting and the final cancellation of the game.
      This is when Connor feels he has lost everything, and decides to co-opt the half-built game to take everything from Mark.

      Although based on the Husk and the Vandal at the end, the game might actually *be* haunted outside of Connor's intentions. They seem to have latched onto it after his suicide. And then there was the bit with jumping off the balcony--I don't think Connor would have animated his own plans for that, and he couldn't have done that after he died, so he might be haunting it himself, just a bit.

Ironically, I've been in the process of gathering all of my old unfiction content (mostly videos) and compiling them into compilation videos and whatnot on a singular TH-cam channel. My plan was to do that and then focus on making other things entirely unrelated to the whole unfiction universe I had been working on, off and on, for nearly six years at this point. I had a whole reboot in mind, but felt dissatisfied with the last two attempts at rebooting it, so I decided to just shelve it. However, I'm thinking that maybe I should give it one more try.

      1) Review your creative and executive lessons from all the times you've tried before.
      2) SIMPLIFY. Simplify, simplify, simplify down to the purest "this is what's true, this is foundation" level. Throw out everything that doesn't serve the core and anything that feels fluffy or came to you on a basis of what may be impressive or just cool to do. If it comes back insisting on itself during the reboot process, it belongs; if it stays gone, it wasn't meant to be there.
      3) Review the lessons from the series Angel Hare: use your time only as much as you need. Get in, get the job done well, get out.
      4) Take your time to make it ROCK, and remember that you have no deadline, no one is waiting on it in a line--you have the time you need to do it right.
      5) Make it ACCESSIBLE to an audience at the start. Give people a foothold to get in and be invested as an intro.
      Do all of that and you'll be driving a much smoother car this time. Good luck!

    My take on the Broadside Drive is that Connor simply dropped by the office the night before the meeting to test out his presentation and his equipment (playable test build of the game). I figure that until he was fired, he was probably welcome to come and go at the office.
    So the timeline is:
    * Mark's final log planning the meeting
    * Mark notifies Cogworks they need to meet
    * Before the meeting, Connor drops by Broadside offices to make sure they have powerpoint downloaded on the computer in the meeting room, etc.
    * Connor accidentally picks up Mark's thumb drive which is just laying around, instead of his own
    * Connor reads the files and types up the 15-part note, and records himself getting upset
    * On the day of the meeting, Mark fires Cogworks and presumably Connor is recording this final meeting.

Seeing Squeaks never give up and making it to his goal was genuinely so encouraging to see, I'm very proud of how far he has come as somebody who's seen his work all the way back in 2021. I didn’t think too hard regarding the drive situation. I just thought it went like this: Mark calls Connor in for a progress presentation or a pitch for the game’s mini games. That progress check is on a hard drive. Presentation goes okay. Connor leaves, but takes the wrong drive, finds the logs and the evidence, and doesn’t speak to Mark for months. Connor finds the log somehow with Mark ranting about the funding. Mark calls an emergency meeting. Game is cancelled. The only issue is regarding Mark’s audio log. That, or Connor got that audio log later after the meeting, and his comment about the medical bills was simply a spot on guess.

    The Studio Grounds Innovation lab has such an easy fix too. Manny them parks, notably Disney, have had corporate sponsorships, and have modeled this rides to support their sponsors. Examples include, "The Monsanto House", a collection between Disney land and Monsanto to build houses of the future, and"The Land" a pavilion made in cooperation with Kraft (Of Mac and Cheese fame) to promote eating healthy and show new farming techniques including the use of GMO's. It would not be out of the question to have such a partnership in the world of the game. This wouldn't fix other problems with the twist, but it would feel more organic.

      on the subhect of this, considering that broadside animation is supposed to be a parody of disney, like a more desperate & reckless version of them. in the past i've disagreed with some of your takes on horror, but hearing your opinions about the starling video really put it into perspective and i think i get it. i've also felt that way about a lot of stuff outside of unfiction and horror, where sometimes i find a trope acceptable where in other places i'd find it boring. why do i like monster classification stories and hidden governments in Control and SCP but not with backrooms content? why do i find ultrakill and limbus company very fun when i normally roll my eyes at a dante's inferno reference in other games? it's all about context and execution. in order for a work to have a truly unique take on a trope, it needs to feature that trope as part of its style. the backrooms isn't about monsters, so putting monsters in it feels cheap. ultrakill and limbus are both adaptations of dante's inferno rather than just games set in hell that reference it. in order to do something truly unique, you need to make the thing you're trying to do the main focus, which is why shipwrecked felt so much more natural as a slasher story rather than a body horror one; because the body horror wasn't relevant until the end.

      if nothing else, though, the starling conversion video did confirm my suspicion; the 'duck and cover' song that plays during one of the starling animations was almost definitely a nod to Trinity Desk Project, another unfiction video that was recently added to Monument Mythos's latest season. the 'duck and cover' song plays during an infographic section of the video, describing a 'natural nuclear reactor' that turns people invisible.

      I will agree with this. As an amateur writer myself, I see this done quite a bit and it does get boring at times, but it depends on the context and inclusion is also important. The reason I say inclusion is because so many stories manage to make certain plot lines and it changes/adds nothing to the story.
      For example, let's take the trope at question: Zombies. Zombies have been done many ways, but not all of them are good. However, for the sake of this argument let's look at 4 points: Good Exposition (also works as Context), Bad Exposition, Good Inclusion, Bad Inclusion.
      For Exposition (Both Good and Bad) we have Walking Dead and the Last of Us which do a virus story about a zombie infection. Now where this can get bad is if you just say, "oh yeah it was from a simple virus" that will not leave viewers satisfied and is kind of a let down. If you do something along the lines of Zombies, make it interesting.
      Then we get to Inclusion where it isn't the main plot but there is something to do with it. In Bad cases, it would be Shipwrecked, because there is no reason for it and adds nothing. But then one of my personal favorites, Emesis Blue, takes a new approach. Instead, while the whole movie is like a timeloop/jumbled story, we see some of the corpse come up as Zombies. This makes sense because we are told numerous times that the respawn machine is not stable and many bad things can tend to happen to it and the corpses.
      As you can see, it is all about being unique, and when to include something liek that where it fits

      @@complex2livetotally!! tropes are JUST storytelling devices, like bricks for lego. HOW they are put together it’s what’s important, but you kinda have to use them. (ofc, oversaturation and all that affects the perception as well but it’s a complicated discussion)

      @carmensinclair9272 when talking about tropes, what I have learned is that is all falls down to Inspiration vs Copycat. Now there are clever loopholes behind Copycatting, with one of the msot famous uses of this being FNAF. Simply because most mascot horror now has to do with killer animatronics. So let's use this as an indepth example, using killer animatronics (FNAF Fangames approach) what games count as copycats, and which ones draw from inspiration.
      Personally, I would recommend watching some of uhyeah's video on this matter but there are main examples of good and bad. Let's start off with copycat examples:
      Muzy, and Five Nights at Candy's. These games basically do nothing to stand out besides design. That's it.
      Then there is inspiration.
      Games such as Tyke and Son's Lumber Company, which in the day makes kind of like Scott's old game Chip's Lumber Company (I think that's what it was called), and you have to do tasks. But then at night, the creations YOU made come to life to stalk you. Then there are the obvious ones like Oblitus Casa and Joy of Creation.
      It's all about Inspiration vs. Copycatting

    I will say as a person who has written multiple novels now and is in a cycle of editing them and trying to figure out publishing options and the constant imposter syndrome despite being passionate about my story telling. This video has me in tears for how much I relate to it. But also thank you because even story tellers need to hear those kind of things.

    Horror games and I have a weird relationship _(can't play them myself, find non-psychological boring, and psychological can freak me out so badly I can't sleep),_ but I can't get over how amazing of a passion project this is.
    A fully playable game that gets the vibes just right... And I LOVE that there's an online setting exclusively for the dev to pop in and play with you if he has the time. Glad it's getting the praise it deserves!
    _(also, I love Stumbler O'Hare with my whole heart, idc about the lore reasons for his inclusion, he is friend-shaped and amazing)_
    Edit: "King of Five Nights at Freddy's" Markiplier is absolutely a good charm to ward away mascot horror spooks.

    I like that, with the Starlings reveal, it implies that Connor is just kinda really not that surprised by the whole thing?? Like wydm u are more pissed at Mark for cancelling ur game over his dying wife than his company turning people into fursuit zombies

    I actually already watched a video on this one, and while it was informative there were a few things missing and I have to admit I couldn't get past wishing I was hearing it all in the oh-so-delicious voice of the OG. At least know I know enough to know that I've REALLY been looking forward to this one! And apparently I'm in for QUITE the ride, jeez. Can't wait!

    29:20 okay but having something move in the back bars on the screen, Thats amazingly creepy, what is normally disregarded as just a technical thing has been used to cause distrubance, thats an amazing detail

    When you revealed the weird flesh stuff from the caves I actually laughed out loud. The rest of the story is basically logical, human horror, and it really felt like that reveal came out of nowhere.
