The pickups in the guitar are not both JB's according to the Charvel site. They should be a JB in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. Also its not orange its red. Charvel calls it Rocket Red.
yes, they fixed it after this video went up. It is Orange the Rocket red name is to insenuat the Road Flare Red on the old Ibanez guitars. It looks like a road cone.
I have the 2015 model which I got on a Black Friday deal for $498. Although I have the same pickups (JB/59), I only have the volume knob and there's no coil split. Mine also doesn't have the relocated truss rod access. The new updates are nice but I'm really happy with mine, especially at that price.

My style II pagan gold (tele looking) does not have the exposed truss rod adjustment, the neck must come off to adjust, I'm glad they made this change. I must say that mine is the most stable guitar I have ever owned.
+Robert Baker I was interested in the Charvel super stock so cal in silver sparkle but you have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod and I owned a few guitars like that and it's a pain in the ass. If it wasn't for that I would of pulled the trigger...
The best guitar configuration I think is humbucker bridge then single, single like the Andy Timmons axe. These guitar configurations are hard to find but the best setup your gonna get.
I have the So Cal in Rocket Red as well! Question: this is is the first spoke wheel truss rod I've owned, is it supposed to have a little play when adjusting? Mine seems to turn a little bit before "catching" the truss rod, or tension.

I personally prefer the fully routed Floyd since it sits lower than the top mounted counterpart. It's simply personal preference and which one is right for your style is the one that is right for you. Guitar players have ragged equipment simply because it does not fit their style since the dawn of time and will do so until the end of time, I suppose. Not you, Phil - just a comment from reading the comments.
It's supposed to have a JB and a 59 in the neck. That's a Floyd Rose 1000 series which are good but just not quite as good as the full blown German ones. Stay away from the Floyd Rose Specials, they work fine but just poor quality..I have owned a couple San Dimas guitars and they are pretty sweet.
One thing I hate about this guitar that keeps me from buying this guitar is that stupid outdated bolt on neck joint. Why can't they make it like the Guthrie signature where the joint is recessed but still bolted on?
Okay, I have the amps. Just telling you what I had to go with the 5150 pedal and the guitars in question. The striped series or the San Dimas? With the pedal can I still get close to EVH sound and still play 80,s rock too on the charvel? Should I get the striped series Evh guitar?

The charvel has different pickups than the ibanez guitars you have, it's not possible to know whether or not the wood is making a difference when the pickups are completely different.

Good review Philip, but definitely not a guitar for me. I think It's f#*@$ ugly bitch. Thought that JB's would sound different than this, but probably the distortion.is due to that. And man that microphonic sound of the "tone wood" ;-( haha ;-) But yeah, it's probably not made for blues/rock, and lot of metal dudes will love it. Colour and sound.
The way they added the tone control and a recessed floating bridge almost cheapens the look. they lost the authenticity and legacy of the Charvel brand.

Is this basically a EVH striped with two pups with more controls? Same parent company Fender. I think it would be plausible and save production cost. If so are the pups and tremolos the same?
Those bodies are Strat bodies. Original Charvels were thicker and most did not have the same kind of belly cut. The necks were slightly wider, almost Les Paul like. This is nothing but a hot rodded Strat, the new HM Strat.

I own both, the charvel is DEFINITELY orange. Its called "rocket red", but its super orange in person. The RFR is very hard to describe to be honest, but is definitely more "red" than the charvel. Road flare red is almost impossible to photograph well, pictures really dont give an accurate portrayal of what it is in person.
Please don't take any advice from this guy when you get ready to set up your instrument and tinker with the trus rod... there's no such nonsense as adjusting the trust rod on the fly... FN please Festus
Great new colors, improved electronics, much better truss rod adjuster, graphite reinforcement rods in the neck! It does appear, however, the necks are no longer quartersawn, bummer. According to the Charvel website, the neck pickup is the Duncan 59 and the Floyd is the FRT-O1000 model. The So-Cal version still retains the Duncan Mayhem pickup set (Distortions), and has the Floyd FRT-O2000 model. Contemplating selling my 2014 So-Cal for one of these..... decisions, decisions.

The Charvel website lists the pickups as JB and 59. I just got mine yesterday in black burst. Packing needs improvement my box was crushed and there is no padding inside the box. My trem mounting hole post was actually sticking through the box. I was pissed when I saw it. So far I couldn’t find any physical damage to the guitar and it works as it should. I recently received a MIM stratocaster that was packed the same way. C’mon guys!
I personally hate these generic names. ML/FR/GT etc. A guitar has a soul and so the name should have one too. It is similar with colours. I love natural wood or extravagant colours like this guitar has. My favorite atm is the blue sparkle or the green pearl Düsenbergs. Speaking of it, do you have an opinion on Düsenberg guitars?

+Dakota Duarte Its a 1989ish-1990's ibanez rg 500 in roadflare red. They did a 25 year anniversary that you can pick up for 800-1500. an original is 400-900 but you're better off getting the new one since it will be more reliable.
HERESY! Road flare red trumps rocket red all day haha I own an rg550RFR, fiesta red strat, and this same charvel. The color is just OBNOXIOUS... I LOVE IT! Was with my wife in guitar center and she points and goes "ooh thats totally you". I turned my head, and oh my god. I played it, probably for like 2 hours and wound up purchasing it. One of my favorite guitars of all time to be honest. What blew my mind is how tame the fiesta red looks compared to the other two. Almost brown for lack of better words. Its definitely a shredder. I imagine its fine for other styles, but the "80s" thing is definitely what this guitar is all about lol.

+Bram V I also have a few guitars with basswood. I think it sounds fine. Pick ups do so much of the sound, but sometimes a guitar doesn't speak to you. You can not fight it. Eddie Van Halen likes Basswood. The wolfgangs sound great.
hi i have the old model (2014 with only one knob) and about the new one : the neck is different now : 2 pieces the pickups are on the body for more sustain the coil split exists no loud tone so, what's the best model ?
Hope they will make these in a hard tail version. I prefer HT's as you retain more wood and not subject to a temperamental Floyd Rose. Still a lovely recreation of a classic 80s icon.

+Philip McKnight How would you compare the new 2016 versions/models to the previous 2015 models? What I am most interested about, it the body wood. Is it heavier or lighter compared to last year? I did not quite like the soft, not very dense alder they had in 2014/2015. Does not give you that spanky, chrystal clear strat tone acustically.

I do get tired of the "reliving the 80's" comment just because they have NEON colors. Either it appeals to you or it doesn't. It's just a color option and has nothing to do with reliving anything. I personally like the Neon Pink and will be purchasing one. It's not like there aren't enough Black, white and red guitars out there. If they never made another black Strat that would be fine by me.
Hey should I get this or the new Jackson soloist sl2q. I played the Jackson and it felt amazing but I'm worried about the double distortion pickups. I like playing Iron Maiden and 80's rock so the charvel would be perfect but I haven't been able to try it anywhere. What do you think I should get?
Very much like Jackson DK2M, the neck/body and pickups are the same by spec. Also sound is pretty much the same. 1:28, behind Mike is Leo from FrogLeapStudios :).
I got one of these used at the start of the pandemic (early 2020) with my Trump bucks...Slime Green!! This guitar slays! The neck is hands down the nicest neck I've ever played. 🤘

No, these are incredibly hard to come by now and the prices are usually over a grand :(

Update: The 2018-2019 models are JB in bridge and '59 in neck. Both split and they have a no-load tone control. I got one. ''love''

As far as colors, not my cup of tea. I always thought San Dimas model was a Hum on the bridge and a S.Coil on the neck. For 800 bucks its not so bad.

I have an OLP (Licensed Ernie Ball copy) and that wheel truss rod adjustment is the way to go! I wish all my guitars had them.

It appears to be an excellent quality guitar. I like the spindle truss rod, coil split, and the tone knob with bypass features.

i have the old model (2014 with only one knob) and about the new one :
the neck is different now : 2 pieces
the pickups are on the body for more sustain
the coil split exists
no loud tone
so, what's the best model ?
Hope they will make these in a hard tail version. I prefer HT's as you retain more wood and not subject to a temperamental Floyd Rose. Still a lovely recreation of a classic 80s icon.

+Philip McKnight How would you compare the new 2016 versions/models to the previous 2015 models? What I am most interested about, it the body wood. Is it heavier or lighter compared to last year? I did not quite like the soft, not very dense alder they had in 2014/2015. Does not give you that spanky, chrystal clear strat tone acustically.
What do you think between this and the EVH Wolfgang Special? Are they kind of the same sound, vibe, etc?

I do get tired of the "reliving the 80's" comment just because they have NEON colors. Either it appeals to you or it doesn't. It's just a color option and has nothing to do with reliving anything. I personally like the Neon Pink and will be purchasing one. It's not like there aren't enough Black, white and red guitars out there. If they never made another black Strat that would be fine by me.
Hey should I get this or the new Jackson soloist sl2q. I played the Jackson and it felt amazing but I'm worried about the double distortion pickups. I like playing Iron Maiden and 80's rock so the charvel would be perfect but I haven't been able to try it anywhere. What do you think I should get?

Very much like Jackson DK2M, the neck/body and pickups are the same by spec. Also sound is pretty much the same. 1:28, behind Mike is Leo from FrogLeapStudios :).

I got one of these used at the start of the pandemic (early 2020) with my Trump bucks...Slime Green!! This guitar slays! The neck is hands down the nicest neck I've ever played. 🤘
Hi Philip, once I played a San Dimas 2005 and LOVED the neck, do u think the New San Dimas may have that amazing neck? was so easy and comfy to play with those San Dimas.
