- On August 22, 1989, Dr. Huey P. Newton was gunned down in West Oakland, CA. That morning, I was driving near the scene on my way to work when I heard the news on the radio. I went to the location with my video camera, and documented what I saw there. The murder had occurred just about 2 hours earlier, and a pool of his blood was still on the sidewalk. That evening, I recorded the extensive news accounts on KTVU News. Later, I took video at the scene showing the many tributes honoring Huey Newton. I also went to the Mortuary where a public viewing of his body was held. I documented that scene as well, though I was not allowed to take video of the open casket.
As this is Black History Month, and that stretch of 9th St. has just been renamed "Dr. Huey P. Newton Way", I feel compelled to release this video.

Newton was shot by a member of The Black Guerilla Family bc of a drug issue. The shooters name was Tyrone Robinson. Its not to say any judgement on Newton. He had a drug problem and alot more about his private life that generally is not talked about. Kathleen Cleaver, Assa Shakur and Angela Davis talk about it. Huey will forever be missed by those who knew him and those who didn't but wanted to know him, for not only being a Black Panther but as a person.,a Husband and Friend. I will always miss him. I learned a lot from Huey and I wish more of us could have learned from him also

Nope that was not what went down. I would read up on how far he fell off and how he horded guns for what he was up too all over the city. this group was not having it and did not care who he used to be.
When I was incarcerated in the Alameda County Jail I was approached by my cell mate a bigtime Oakland, San Francisco drug dealer. Huey P Newton was also being held there. My cell mate asked if I would kill Huey P Newton with a knife. He stated Huey P Newton would be drugged by the guards. After Huey was drugged by the guards they would let me out of my cell, give me a knife and all I had to do was go into the cell and stab a defenseless Mr Newton to death. Afterwards I would be allowed to take a shower to remove Huey’s blood and let back into my cell. He also mentioned how I would be on my release from jail given a drug den in Alameda with police protection. Of course I refused his offer.

J. Edgar Hoover and his COINTELPRO was responsible for flooding those neighborhoods with cheap heroin. That was purposefully done to neutralize the Panthers, so his murder was by design. What's worse, the drug dealer more than likely benefitted from the social programs that the Panthers helped to start, like the breakfast program for kids in the community. I hope the dealer and JEH are burning in Hell.

On a side note. I noticed the old Cypress structure (freeway) in the background. I had forgotten the date of this. This was in August 1989. Just a little while later in October that freeway collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
