@@briangriffin8106 Nick is back in Boston this Wed and Thursday at Brighton Music Hall. Check it out especially with Los Straitjackets. They are awesome!!
Yeah I never really thought of it but isn't it essentially a rewrite of Reelin in the Years? Trying to see the connection 2 Phil and Company and Basher? I guess that would be phonogram records which had a connection 2 stiff records. I guess his delivery is kind of in that Phil kind of way which is weird because Elvis Costello had that husky tone to his voice and obviously he was part of Lowe's crew. Then again I guess this is all an offshoot of Pub Rock and Birch would know all that 1976 cross over into New Wave Punk
I had all of the Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe cassettes from back in the 70s. Such talented musicians. Then "Seconds of Pleasure" came out in 1980 and the band now had a name: Rockpile!
@Musical Box No, but the similarities between this, SD's Reelin in the years and TL's Boys are back in town are obvious. Fun (off topic) fact: Huey Lewis recorded with both Lizzy and Lowe back then.
Here in 2022, when Nick pulled this one out of the deepest corners of my memory, starting his opening set for Elvis Costello with this beauty, at Massey Hall in Toronto. Keep on rocking, Nick!
Billy Bremner from Aberdeen Scotland....top,top,top lead guitarist/ vocalist/ high harmonies........George Duncan professional musician.....lead guitarist/ vocalist of from Aberdeen.
Is that Dave Edmunds strumming his guitar and playing the short solo? One of the best love/hate relationships in music.. The Odd couple of British pop - the relentless planner vs. The Basher!
I just heard this on the music round of BBC 2's "University Challenge" and both the team winning the starter round and I said Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. We were all wrong and it was Nick Lowe. I'd never have guessed.
How cool would it have been for them to collaborate on some tunes? Damn, we were cheated when Gram left us. The actual band is ROCKPILE -credit as solo Nick, yet Dave Edmunds on guitar also worked the other three. The Drummer and Bass played with The Pretenders, when they were "in crisis". Only One Rockville album, and its still brilliant!
The "others" are guitarist Billy Bremner and drummer Terry Williams. Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders, and Williams was in Dire Straits, not the Pretenders. You are right that there was only one RockPILE album, but Rockpile played on three Dave Edmunds albums and one Nick Lowe record.
@@tygrkhat4087 Rockpile played "the concert for Kampuchea" in Dec'1979. @@jonathanmurphy3141I fully agree. I had the cassette of the concerts, just a stellar lineup and great songs. And the players in the Rockestra, holy cow! 3/4 of Led Zeppelin (Plant, Bonham and Jones), half of the Who (Townshend and Jones), half of Rockpile (Edmunds and Bremner), plus James Honeyman-Scott, Ronnie Lane and Bruce Thomas of the Attractions.
A power pop masterpiece from the man that was the behind-the-scenes unsung Godfather of a vast chunk of all British Power Pop and New Wave music in the late 70’s and early 80’s. if you ask where New Wave started, you could claim Elvis Costello’s 1977 album “My Aim is True” as the the delineated beginning. From the great days of mimed rock videos -- still better than a studio recording with a still picture of an album cover. Love the Frank Gorshin look on Nick Lowe.
it makes me really happy that GTA has brought some attention to the brilliant Nick Lowe and this great song. I didn't arrive here from GTA... for me, it was the Rock N Roll High School soundtrack from 1979. damn i'm old
Must've been 1978. A friend BEGGED me to go see Bad Company with him at the LA Forum. I agreed, nearly kicking and screaming. I had become a huge fan of the new Punk undrground (which included a lot of Roots & Garage genres). On our drive to the show, I asked my friend, "Is there at least an opening act, so it's not a total loss?" He said, "Yeah, but I 've never heard of them - "Dave Edmunds Rockpile". I couldn't believe it! It turned my attitude 180 degrees around! I was a HUGE fan. We got there about midway through their first song. Nick Lowe was decked out in a 1963 Beatles colorless suit - and the band was kicking ass. Bad Company's fans were dancing in the aisles! When Dave Edmunds cut loose with "I Hear You Knockin' "- there was an arena-wide gasp (OHHH! That's who they are!"). It became Rock 'n' Roll pandemonium. Bad Company came out - and after one song, were met with "Bring back the OTHER band!" I felt bad for Bad Company (to a point). But, Rockpile had left them gasping on the dust bowl of what was OLD. Rockpile was kicked off the tour shortly after that. But the point was MADE! 😎
Wow, the memories of listening to the U.S. version of this album (Pure Pop for Now People). This song, Breaking Glass, Marie Provost, Rollers Show....so cool
having seen this video for the first time, the band's stance in this video totally reminds me of the 'Hate To Say I Told You So' video by The Hives 😁 love Nick, he is just brilliant!
My favorite verse: In the air there's after-shave lotion In the wake of a snake-hipped Persian On his arm there's a skin tight vision Wonder why she ain't mine she is his'n
I also asked him about the "SBDs" that would be clearing the street in his song "Half a Boy and Half a Man". Boy, I really had that one wrong! He explained that it's the "S.P.G.s", The Special Patrol Group (SPG) of London constables that were especially known to get overly violent when dealing with citizens (especially punk rockers). I was too embarrassed to tell him what "SBD" stood for, and that I assumed the guy in the song had especially powerful farts! lol

Just saw Nick open for Elvis Costello in Boston at the MGM Music Hall...SOOOOOO GREAT!!! He had the crowd in the palm of his hand.
Yes. I saw them both at Paso Robles. As much as I love Elvis Costello, I have to say that Nick kind of stole the show a little.
WHAT???!!!
How did I not see that. Dammit!

GTA!
same same. they're called 'rockstar' games for a reason - rad music's been one of the defining features of the GTA series
This song shreds and a major reason why: Dave Edmunds is playing those razor sharp chords : )
God Bless Nick Lowe. He was born to be a rock n roller. It's in his blood. Could you imagine him doing anything else?

I had all of the Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe cassettes from back in the 70s. Such talented musicians. Then "Seconds of Pleasure" came out in 1980 and the band now had a name: Rockpile!
The toured as "Rockpile" for several years prior to SOP.
Along with Graham Parker, they define the tail end of the 70s for me.
Nick Lowe could not make a bad song if he tried ! I immediately thought of Thin Lizzy when I heard this on the radio.
Guitar sound reminds me of Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money".
the song was on university challenge and they thought it was thin lizzy as well.
so did I
Like a cross between Steely Dan and Thin Lizzy.

Yeah, the one I heard on the radio around 1979 or 1980 had only his voice in the chorus. Maybe he's here with Rockpile.
