You have a great attitude on ops sessions. Keep the operators having a positive time is the utmost. I’ve hosted over 700 sessions on my old layout and about 30 on my new layout. Keep up the good work!!! Sorry I missed my opportunity to operate on your layout. I hope to get another opportunity.
Nice video Paul! I’ve been to and hosted numerous ops sessions as you know. Some have been great some have been pretty bad. But I think one thing we should get in the habit of doing is encouraging our operators to use uncoupling tools. We’re all guilty of use our big catchers mitts when we really shouldn’t be especially since models are so detailed these days.
This video is great for someone in my shoes that has never attended an ops session but definitely plans to have one once my layout is farther along. I designed my layout around a few core jobs to run for operating sessions but it's all been done in theory because I don't have a ton of experience with operating sessions.
You made good points, especially about communication, both up and down. Great that you're open to change, instead of "It's my layout and that's the way it is!"
I have learned nothing in the last year, LOL. I really enjoy having people over to my layout. I need to keep track of my sessions, I have no idea how many people I have had or how many sessions.
@@HumancityJunction oh Heath, of course you've learned things. I seem to remember some strategically placed plexiglass being added during a live stream. That counts! Lol
Interesting! Hosting for any type of event can be difficult and requires planning and preparation. Adding people who are expected to fit into activities adds to the difficulty. I'm not into the "operating" thing in a big way so this is all new to me. Rick and I were discussing this over lunch the other day. Do you have an interchange track/yard per se' ?
Very interesting track plan for operations.Just found your channel.I do operations too.I have 3 yards and a total of 65 switches.40 foot 0gauge Model Train layout.Do you have a uncoupling track for take HO

Great video, great suggestions. So glad to hear your op sessions are going well and getting better.

@@MyFingerLakesRailwayLayout thanks Bill!
Sage advice, thanks for sharing.
Even real life railroads have these problems like derailments and switches being in the wrong position

@@FGLKPaul I am sure I forgot more than I learned :)
Always make sure as a host you provide some refreshments and some kind of snacks oh and lots and of coffee ☕️ lol
@@daivdwalker2374 of course! There's always at least some cookies and chips along with drinks at my sessions. Sometimes more.
Great video and good lessons!
In regards to Momentum, I am going to have a function setup for switch mode. On the ESU decoders, switch mode disables momentum.
@@HumancityJunction that's an interesting solution to that conundrum, awesome!
Thanks Paul, your wrirght we dont have to be scared to make changes, just hve a small switching layout and run it by rules

Thanks for posting Paul. Some very good advice there.

5:00 Is a 3rd industry in Auburn? i may have missed a time that you mentioned it.
There's technically 2 industries in Auburn, but 4 switching opportunities. Nucor, Auburn Metal Processing, Auburn Yard, and the Solvay Sweep Track.
@FGLKPaul thanks for clearing this up. Is the sulvay sweep track just an interchage?
@@nathanpohl8732 that's pretty much how I use it, since I don't model the interchange yard they have at that end of the line with CSX.
#4, I hope that I never have to do scenery on my layout :) I am definintely not looking forward to that part.
