    I'm a newby. But an old school engineer. I just hate seeing how marketing is done these days. I used to write blue prints you'd read (used to be called instructions on usage) but ppl sued saying those instructions are wrong causing issues. NO, it was them. So across the board NO ONE give complete instructions. It's vague, or has disclaimer that this is only an example. So now they not only tell you nothing.
    But, they take kits apart and sell seeratly to make 100% profit. This is why 3rd party companies exist. I say it's just fine.
    But if you do as I've done, and learn who (public stock wise) owns most all 3rd party. It comes down to the owners of the camera companies. Call it a conspiracy, or just today's smart marketing. Used to be called monopolizing, but they can easily avoid that. So yes, appears to be a scam going on. And I'm here to tell you THERE is. Look for your self. It's just kinda a despicable thing many humans do to eachother. So I learn from these videos what's actually best, and buy it. It's usually never the OEM.

    Dude! Great minds DO think alike. I did my homework (abt 2 years ago) and bought, not only the same but the same brands, 2 extra 18 batteries and double charger. Unfortunately it adds quite a lot of heft to my already heavy kit. BUT, that said, video sucks power and photos do as well. I drug this anchor ⚓ all over New York City last summer but, I got photos and video and never worried about running out of battery power! When shooting my son's autocross, the 9fps gets the shots I would surely miss. Great review, even 2 yrs late! 😃 Thanks

    Great review/tutorial. Yes, Nikon prices for add-ons are outrageous. How can Wasabi or Hahnel produce good-quality extras for a fraction of the price of the Nikon product? I have 4 extra batteries for my Nikon FX camera, and not one of them is Nikon.

    • @MassimosFotografie
      @MassimosFotografie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Eugene!
      To answer your question as to why Wasabi can produce good quality extras for a fraction of the price of the Nikon products.. I think one should ask how Nikon convinces themselves to sell some of these products that don't actually have much value for such outrageous prices.
      It really blows my mind when thinking of the D810 or D850, because these cameras have such tremendous value for what they are capable of! It almost reminds me of printers.. they often sell you printers for nearly free, but then the printer ink is the biggest scam on the planet.
      Sorry, I went a little off topic there, but the more I've been using my Wasabi batteries, the happier I've been!

    • @markrigg6623

    En excellent tutorial/video indeed, thanks Massimo. Hopefully Nikon needs more attractive prices on these accessories. I have bought D700 & D800 with their already expensive grips, already disappointed by lack of commonality at this level. For my D850 I had decided to skip buying another grip, but you gave me an interesting option...

    • @MassimosFotografie
      @MassimosFotografie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you ever give the 3rd party grip and parts a try for the D850? Mine still work perfectly to this day.
      Now with the Z8, the grip and everything necessary don't quite add up to what it would cost for the official D850 battery, charger, etc., but it's still expensive.
      Also from what I read, the Nikon Z8 blocks 3rd party components.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Nice explanation of what to get and what the prices are. If you are totally dependent on the grip and shoot professional I can imagine that the Nikon grip package is stil the way to go.
    For me I will occasionally use it and not depend on it, only very nice to have more battery life and 9fps :-)
    I went with the Vello BG-N19-2 grip, watson 2600mAh battery (wasabi difficult to get a hold of), wasabi charger and DSTE BL-5. Works very good and the 9fps does still make about 30% speed difference :-) great. I was a little worried that the 2600 Watson would not give 9fps, but works fine. They also have a. more expensive > 3000mAh, which will give more battery life, but for me not that important.

    Cost has come way down on the Nikon parts the batteries are 150$ each now at a lot of places and it’s really like purchasing two batteries in one for the D850. The grip is under 400$ now and the battery door adapter is 25$. It’s still really expensive but you could re-sell the whole package for more value down the road vs the 3rd party stuff is junk and likely won’t even be working anymore by the time you want to upgrade your camera. I’ve bought many 3rd party batteries over the years and they never last as long as the original manufacturer batteries. I got some wasabi for my A7rii they lasted about 6 months before they started failing One by one. Several years later the battery that came with the camera is still going strong. You get what you pay for.

    • @MassimosFotografie
      @MassimosFotografie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Raevenswood!
      I think it's fair to say that could re-sell the Original Nikon Parts for a greater value. But let me tell you, these parts that I bought years ago I put through quite a lot as I've traveled the world, and they did not fail or disappoint in any way.
      Furthermore, I've had so many individuals reach out to me and show their appreciation regarding this video of mine, and nobody has had any issues.
      These Batteries that I've been using with the Battery Grip have been part of my reason why I've not been upgrading to Nikon Mirrorless quite yet, because the battery life is just such a luxury.
      Perhaps it's time I make an update video though :)

    Helpful video -- Worried about the durability of this brand when carried about all day with a 200-500mm attached. So I am thinking about getting the Nikon grip, then the off-brands you mentioned to work with it (battery, charger, etc.) to bring price down. Is there any issue with doing that?

      Hi John, how are you!
      I've been using this battery grip and all other shown 3rd party components since before I made this video, and I have never had any issues. People have been e-mailing me and telling me how happy they have been as well!
      I understand why you'd have concerns with such a massive lens attachrd, but there really shouldn't be any, because let's even assume someone reveived a bad unit, you do have amazing return policies in place on Amazon!
      I'm certain that if you compared this 3rd party grip vs. the original Nikon one that you'd find quality differences, but I've been using my D850 non-stop and on travels through Europe, and I haven't run into any issues or concerns. I will say that I do treat my gear very carefully though at all times! Rain has not been an issue.
      Give it a try, I think you'll be quite happy :)
      You have too much to gain when you think about the still outrageous Nikon prices.
      Let me know if you have any other questions

      I'm not sure if I understand the camera strap question? But The grip holds any weight, I've not run into any issues, and I use my camera daily!

    My only recommendation would be to buy the original Nikon grip and Nikon BL-5 chamber as the off brand products are NOT WEATHER SEALED. I have both the D500 and D850 and have tested both the off brand and now have the official grip and BL-5 chamber for the battery. The off brand grip can short you camera and cost you the life of your camera. I have had the off brand grips malfunction from the weather being either too cold or too hot resulting in overheating. The official Nikon battery grip does not have this issue as it's made from the official magnesium alloy material. When using the offbrand BL-5 door or chamber I would recommend to only use these when the weather is dry due to the fact that it is not weather sealed like the original made by Nikon. Once rain or moisture starts to occur I would change out to the original battery door that your grip came with, or just get the official BL-5 door....which could be very tough to find in stock. During the time of this comment, the BL-5 official chamber is currently out of stock and backorder on many sites. I do stand by wasabi batteries as well as the charger. I have been using these batteries for years without any issues on my D500 or D850. Also these batteries make your autofocus on your prime lenses faster which is very nice. Just make sure your housing is official. Nikon made it the price for a good reason. Not sure about those batteries or official charger though lol

      Do 3rd party grips still grant 9fps after the latest firmware update?

  • @Nate-jr2du
    @Nate-jr2du 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just bought the setup in this video, installed it and it showed it was 9FPS, I took it all outside to take a photo and it fluctuated back to 7FPS. It wasn’t able to hold the 9FPS, like there was something wrong with the grip connecting to the camera. I am very sure I had it screwed in firmly. I tried every trick to get to work again, at one point it was reading the battery grip with the wasabi battery inside normally, but completely froze at 7FPS and never moved up to 9. Is this a normal problem for the Mcoplus grip? Seems like I have a screw in problem because it only stopped reading it when I’d move around and I could feel a little bit of wiggle to the grip connected to the camera.
    Anyone have better success with other grips?

    • @Nate-jr2du
      @Nate-jr2du 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on all of the attempts at getting to stay on 9FPS, it felt like it came down to the screw in and how it wasn’t tight enough for the camera to hold the grip properly. A tad bit of wiggle would remove the 9FPS.

    • @MassimosFotografie
      @MassimosFotografie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nate-jr2du Since this is the very first time I've heard about this, I'm trying to understand where it's going wrong.
      So, you've followed all the steps, the camera is set to "Continuous High", in the settings the Battery Grip is selected as the first source for Battery, your battery is charged, and the 9 FPS showed up, correct?
      Make sure that when you connect the Battery grip to the bottom of your camera that you don't seat it awkwardly. Screwing it tight should not require screwing it extremely tight!
      If the Battery Grip disconnects from the connection under your camera, yes, the 9 FPS would disable, but it should never disconnect like that if it's screwed on properly.
      I'm assuming you haven't had any previous damage or water damage to the Battery Grip connection under your camera.

    • @Nate-jr2du
      @Nate-jr2du 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MassimosFotografie yes I have followed all the steps as shown in the video even the tips and advice in all the comments I’ve seen here.
      It’s all setup, Continuous H, the primary battery is set to to the battery grip and it did in fact work right. Until the grip started to wiggle leading to the 9FPS fluctuating back to 7FPS. I will try again to screw it in not too tightly but I was however attempting it carefully and it just never held up and kept the 9FPS. So I’m thinking the screw is messed up on the grip. I just purchased the D850 a couple of weeks ago.

    Great video. Can't understand why the D850 requires an additional HD Lithium battery just to get it to fire at 9fps. That should have been incorporated into the camera in its standard configuration. Now to get it to fire at 9fps, you not only have to spend $$$ (Nikon) or $ (Wasabi), but you have added bulk and weight to the camera. On top of that, there is the added inconvenience to have to remove the battery grip in order to access the standard battery inside the camera each and every time it needs to be charged. Fail fail on the design.

      Oh yeah. 1 more thing. I went to check on Amazon for the Wasabi Battery. However, the battery does not ship to my country which is Singapore. How can I get the battery when the battery is not able to ship to Singapore.

      Do 3rd party grips still grant 9fps after the latest firmware update?

    I just purchased all of the 3rd party parts that you did. None of the buttons work and I am only getting 7 fps. Also after only shooting 65 shots, battery indictor shows I only have 84% battery left on the en-18. Any suggestions?

      Hi Denny, how are you!
      So you have purchased all of the mentioned components, including the chamber cover, and you have also changed the Batter order to "Use MB-D18 batteries first"? I've not heard about none of the buttons working. The only thing that I could think of is programming the buttons in your Custom Settings or having the Shutter Lock button enabled on the battery grip.
      Regards the battery life being down to 84% on the EN-18, it all depends on usage of camera. For example was live view used, or do you use the Wireless functions and touch screen?
      This is my suggestion, go to Setup Menu, Reset all settings, detach the battery grip, and attach it back on. It is possible to have a bad Battery unit. My regular D850 battery, the En-EL15a was bad, and I contacted Nikon's customer support. They sent me a new one, and my battery wasn't draining quickly anymore.
      If you have a second En-EL-18, try using that one for comparison! Also, use the Calibration function on the charger just in case. You should be able to get thousands of shots of these batteries, specially if you use internal intervalometer.
      I've received a lot of messages and e-mails regards this video, and everybody has been quite happy with what they got, and it's worked for everyone. There was one case where someone didn't get the Chamber Cover, and because of that they couldn't unlock the 9 FPS.
      Let me know if this helps! I would not mind trying to help via video chat if you like me to

      I bought this grip as well as the other parts so that my D850 could achieve 9 fps as well as the advertised 5000 shots using the en-el18 battery plus the en-el15. I installed the grip and battery and the camera recognizes the grip and battery. However after testing it out, none of the buttons on the grip work, I can not get 9 fps, only 7, and after 65 shots the battery indicator shows only 84% left on the en-el18. I am not happy at all after purchasing these parts because nothing that I wanted is working.

      How do you enable shutter lock button on grip. I did remove the grip and re-attach to make sure it was getting good contact. Green light came on camera to indicate that it recogixes the grip

      @@dennyriffert1803 I understand! Have you enabled the use of the EN-El 18 battery 'first' in the Setup Menu as shown at 9:16 in my video?
      On the battery grip, the shutter button, right around it is a lock mechanism. If it is set to Lock, the the Shutter Button won't work. Furthermore, the other buttons on the Battery Grip, including the Shutter Button, can be modified in your D850's Custom Menu.
      Also, make sure your D850 is set to Ch Mode for the 9 FPS, just in case

      I did enable the battery grip in the setup menu. The instructions with the grip was sparse so I didn’t know about the shutter lock. I unlocked it and now all of the buttons and controls in the grip work. In fact now I am getting 9 fps. Does that make sense that having the shutter locked would have that effect on all of that. Also I checked the battery indicator on the camera and it now shows 91% left after 200 shots. The % went from 84% after 65 shots to 91% after 200 shots. That is crazy

    Wake up Nikon! You are falling behind for several reasons, this is one of them.

      Sadly the Nikon Z8 does not support 3rd party parts from what I read.
