I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks for covering this one. I hope there is an updated version of this or the GX9 released at some point! If there is, I suspect it may share the S9 body.
Hi! I'm a canon user and just recently, i bought a gx8 & I can't seem to figure out how to change the iso while shooting video in manual mode? Is there a setting where you can change it? Thanks in advance ✌🏼
Wait... So you use the screen to take a selfie at 7:13, which means, that you see the framing ant yourself, and you still get startled by the image, when you see the same image again in 2 seconds?? Hmmm... :p
nice review man, ive only had a quick play with it but keep coming back to see if the spark is there, currently using fujifilm xe2 but would love the smaller lenses. (15 1.7 & 42.5) i love the silver lens on the black body!
Odlican prikaz funkcija ove kamere, hvala puno! Excellent review, very detailed and with many fine examples of use, loved the spider.... So tired of people "reviewing" by just listing the functions without having own opinion. Just discovered your channel and subscribed, very good work!
I've upgraded to the 2.2 firmware, it's basically the same, _but_, you can solve this by assigning the AF/AE lock button to be your back focus button and so that it locks the focus when you release it. If the talent isn't moving really fast, I find it to be very acceptable. Considering _everything_ good that this camera has, this issue is a minor one for me. It's usually not advised to use M43 cameras for shooting sports and similar, but in everyday life as well as in video with moderately moving subjects it's fine. I've bought mine for extra price here in Sweden (USD710 with the 14-42 kit lens) and it's an amazing camera for my needs. The stills are on pair with my NIKON D5300 shot with the prime f1.8, and the 4K video is top notch.
+Walter H. White Ehmm... I have bad experience using adapters of various sorts and I know I'm not the only one. Adapters are easily misplaced and if produced poorly can have loose contact or similar issues.
Walter H. White Yeas I ended up buying a 2.5mm adapter for my Panasonic FZ200 which has the same issue. I use Metz flashguns on my Pany cameras anyway which are powerful.
Steve Ferneyhough why anyone would want a flash is beyond me it has to be the biggest piece of junk in photography. You're eye's don't have a flash so why use one they give unnatural pictures, ok for fill in during studio work but other than that totally pointless.
Professional orientated cameras don't come with built in flashes normally! That's not an issue (at least for me). With this standard flash shoe you can pretty much use any flash you like. More of a problem could be this 2.5 micophone input ... :(
Hey! I'm thinking about changing from my E-M10 to E-M5 Mark II, but this camera seems interesting. How do you like the GX8 Compared to Olympus style? Do you still have your Olympus lenses? I'm thinking about the image stabilisation and how it works without. Cheers!
really great review ! I'm now hesitating between the FZ1000, G7 or Gx8. I'm not professional but I'm looking for a camera with very good video quality. I read there was no stabilization for the G7 or GX8 while making video. Is that a big problem ? and is that possible to change that with a certain type of lens ?
the GX8 has in body image stabilization which works in comparison to the Lumix kit lenses plus lens stabilization to compensate for camera shake - vibration the 4k video & still photos function is very impressive I guarantee you n being able to drag 4k stills from ultra HD Video is a fantastic feature this works in 3 different modes also.
Around 7.33 minutes you comment on the EVF. The 60 frame per second refresh rate. What are you searching through the menu for when you say this comment? Something in relation to this?
+joe nick There is an option to select 30 or 60fps for live view, somehow I didn't found it when filming and forgot about it untill editing video few days later. :)
+LeonNixonUnderscore IQ depend on many things, but primarily sensor and lens. Given same lens quality A7, 6D and D610 will always be better than GX8 since they have full frame sensors, GX8 does not. This is especially seen in higher dynamic range, higher tolerance for post processing and lower noise in high ISO. If you use primarily lower ISO values, know how to expose and showcase images mainly online or print smaller formats, difference in IQ will not be visible.
Very usefull video! Thank you very much for posting your review, and even more for demonstrating electronic/mechanical shutter sound levels (I just need a camera that is absolutely silent)... best wishes, svako dobro i hvala! p.s. Odlicne fotografije! :)
Its confusing strategy.. why do they need to have g series and then gx series? it doesn't make sense. And on top of that then they have GM series.. How are they going to make money with so many models but so few sales.
Hi, what lenses do you recommend to go along with this camera? I am completely new to this and am considering buying this camera. You mentioned you found that the kit lenses weren't great.
Hm, now you got me thinking and I double checked with manual... it seems there are some limitation that I forgot about (it's been 3 years since I reviewed this camera)... GX8 cannot use IBIS for video at all, only lens IS. So, for a non-stabilized lens you are out of luck. Sorry for the wrong info, newer models like my GX80 has IBIS active for any lens, I forgot GX8 had those stupid limitations... :(
None of them is ideal in my opinion but it depends on the price. GX8 would have been great if not for shutter shock problem, IBIS limitations, articulated LCD (which is not useful for my style of shooting) and stupid 2.5mm mic input. GX9 has no such isssues but lacks weather sealing and its EVF is really not up to the modern standards. That's why I bought GX80 earlier this year. It's not a perfect camera also but cost me only €500 and for that price I am ready for compromise (at that point both GX8 and GX9 were still at €1000). Now, if at the same price I would choose GX9 over GX8., but that's just me.
Should be OK as long as you have solid amount of light . it doesn't focus well in the dark. On the other side, lack of mic input might be a bigger problem fro vlogging.
+Adrian Bittner Everyone says its a great camera but it is not available in most of Europe anymore. Samsung as a brand doesn't sell digital cameras anymore here in Croatia so i can't review anything from Samsung since spring :(
This is what I call a good and adequately detailed review. Thank you very much.
I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks for covering this one. I hope there is an updated version of this or the GX9 released at some point! If there is, I suspect it may share the S9 body.
they need to remake this camera and add what it is missing..the form and build is great!
Agreed! Just bought another one 9 years after my first. 1/3 price this time round.
@@GudieveNing that's awesome I've been thinking about it from time to time lol

Assign it to some of the buttons if not already, it should be accessible.
Can you do a video on customizing the function buttons? Thanks.
He, I have the GX8 for 2 years. Never had that purple lens flare
I love my GX8 and am looking forward for GX9 with all the features of GH5 (hopefully). :)

I think that at around 1000$ today it's still good? Thoughts?
Does the camera turn off by heating when recording in 4K ?, is there any way to record more than 15 min in 4k?

I heard that continuous autofocus is really bad on this camera... Lets hope Panasonic will provide new firmware.

Very nice comprehensive review. Job well done!
Thanks! :)
I upgraded to a g9. Did I waste my money?
Very good review, very comprehensive. It's a great camera, the only downsides for me is the daft 2.5mm microphone input and no built in flash.
+Steve Ferneyhough Agreed, but both issues are easily addressed for a few bucks.
+Walter H. White Ehmm... I have bad experience using adapters of various sorts and I know I'm not the only one. Adapters are easily misplaced and if produced poorly can have loose contact or similar issues.

+hapiness32 All lenses with optical stabilzation will have stabilized video. On GX8 any lens will be stabilizes because on-sensor stabiliazation.

but GX8 IBIS doesn't work in video, or I didn't notice.

Ok thanks. Why would you select 30 fps over 60 fps for a refresh rate in an EVF?
+joe nick 30 gives brighter and cleaner live view in low light. The darker it is, bigger the difference will be.
How does this camera compare to the Sony A7? Also, is there much loss in quality between the Canon EOS 6D or Nikon D610 and these mirrorless cameras?

No, I haven't noticed any problems in real life images.

What do you plan taking photos of?
Got a brand new GX8 with free Panasonic 25/1.8 lens for $565USD. Should I keep it?
+Roxy-Jane Stone Do you like it?
Have you still got that camera, would love to buy it off you am in Zimbabwe Africa
if Carlsberg did reviews.. packed with information, thank you.
7:25 "or upward without breaking your neck" made me lol for some reason
Brilliant video as usual. Thank you.

PS what is your ethnic origin?
+Robert Jeffries Thanks :) I'm Croatian.
Do you know is IBIS works when shooting video, especially with non stabilised lens?
Well of course! That's the whole point, it even lets you enter focal length for old mechanical lenses, it fine tunes stabilization according to that.
@@Camerahoarders Thanks, a lot of forums claim IBIS doesn't work with video.

adaptador para plug audio?
Nice video! Good job!
Just wondering, is this camera good for vlogging? With sharpness and focusing on our face ?
Should be OK as long as you have solid amount of light . it doesn't focus well in the dark. On the other side, lack of mic input might be a bigger problem fro vlogging.
Camerahoarders how about olympus pen f? Which one better?
Stick with Panasonic for video, Olympus cameras are more photo-oriented.
Camerahoarders ok then i'll buy gx8 then. Perhaps u know, when gx9 will be released?
No, i don't think there are GX9 rumors so far.
great review and good points.
That was very helpful, many thanks.

Btw you can “hack” european models to have 4k 30fps
Good video, 7:18 hhhhhh
