  • Welcome to Sunshine Swim Center. This is an overview of one of our Sunfish level skills. Here at Sunshine, we believe in instructor education, water safety and creating a love for swimming in all of our classes.
Our Sunfish Level is an intermediate level; for swimmer's 4 years old and up with a ratio of 4 swimmers to one instructor.
Kick with head up on board- 12.5 yards
Once our swimmers have demonstrated strong streamline kicks, we introduce kickboards into our classes. Kickboards can be a helpful teaching aid in swim lessons. They allow your swimmers to build core strength and focus on their kicks rather than staying afloat or catching their breath.
Our instructor positions themselves 12 yards in front of the swimmer and then gives instructions. “When I say go, you're going to push off the wall and do freestyle kicks towards me.”
Once the swimmer kicks 12 yards, we help them stop, turn around and swim back to the wall. Swimmers repeat skill several times. The goal is for the swimmer to have very little shoulder, head and core movement when demonstrating this skill.
Safety Tip: When students are using a kickboard they should never push the board under water or sit on it. This can cause the board to fly up if they lose control and hit themselves or someone else. Be sure to make it clear to your swimmers they need to hold onto their boards while waiting their turn.
