    Thanks for your post on the F-8 Crusader. My experience crossed paths with the F-8 several times over the years. In the mid-1950s while I served as a Civil Air Patrol Cadet, I had the opportunity to visit Chance Vought the manufacturer of the F-8. During a walk around of the plant I was able to check out the Crusader and receiving a briefing on its capabilities.
    Later, while serving with the Navy during the Vietnam war, we patrolled near carriers that launched the F-8.
    After I separated from the Navy, I worked on the flightline at LTV Aerospace the successor to Vought. This was during 1967 and 68. I was assigned to work on the electronic countermeasure's suite as I'd worked on shipboard ECM equipment during my time with Navy.
    The ECM suite offered the best resources to misdirect enemy radar systems away from their intended targets. The F-8s I worked on were older aircraft that were being updated for service in Allied armed forces.

    _The real last gunfighter was the F-105_ . *The F-8 was designed to use the AIM-9D as its primary weapon and in fact, all but two of the kills by the F-8 were done with the AIM-9 Sidewinder* . The F-105 had 25 gun kills vs two for the F-8. The F-105 was not originally designed to carry the Sidewinder so the 20mm canon was its only ariel combat armament when it was introduced, though it was later updated to carry sidewinders. To me, this makes the F-105 the real "last gunfighter". The F-105 had more kills than the F-8 and the vast majority of the F-105 kills were with the cannon. Glorifying the F8 as the last gunfighter simply isn't accurate.

    At 3:43 the video mistakenly shows a row of A-7 Corsair II's. The planes look similar but this was a silly mistake.

    _The guns on the F-8 were NOT the primary weapon_ . *The AIM-9D was the primary weapon* and the Sidewinder accounted for all but two of the kills made by the F8. The real gunfighter of Vietnam was the F-105, which racked up 25 gun kills.

    I can't believe how many times it's mentioned that the f8 has guns and not once do you mentioned that 4 out of 19 kills we're with guns!

      My sources say 2 out of 18 but either way I know what you’re saying. Phantoms had like 12-15 gun kills over Vietnam I think… and maybe that was just Air Force.

    • @charlesmoore1358
      @charlesmoore1358 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @guaporeturns9472 it had to be Air Force. Navy F4s never had a gun. Also, Air Force had more Sparrow Missle kills, Navy's weapon of choice was the sidewinder.

      @@guaporeturns9472 The F-015 had 25 gun kills during Vietnam. To me, it is the plane that really deserves the "Last Gunfighter" honors. I believe that this is the most gun kills of the war in Vietnam for any type. All of the commentators that say the the 20mm was the primary weapon are simply wrong. The primary weapon was the AIM-9D. In fact, the 20mm gun was known to jam even in low G maneuvers.

    1942, the Navy had F4F Wildcat as their premier fighter. Imagine, just 10 years, the Navy is requiring a mock one jet fighter. Talk about aircraft advancement with in 10 years!

      Then you know nothing about supersonic aviation history ; in the 1990s, during nato dogfighting exercises the French F8E FN dominated everyone, they out turned and dominated any fighter jet they faced, from mirage IIIs and mirage F1s to F-14s nothing could resist them in close combat. It is the result of advanced (advanced by 1950s-1960s standards) aerodynamic studies and is most likely one of the most, if not THE most agile supersonic fighter of the 1950-1980 (if not 1950-1990) era.

      @@rigopogr2113 oh, and what makes you say that my Greek friend ?
      Just to clarify, all those informations I have about the F-8E FN during those *dogfighting* exercises come from historical books about the F-8 crusaders, historical pictures (including gun camera footage) as well as from someone that was actually there, knows the plane like the back of his hand and who I've known since litterally the day of my birth. This is not a debate, those are historical facts, the mirages that faced the F-8E FN in a close quarter dogfight lost every time.
      As for why a mirage III or mirage F1 would loose a dogfight against an F-8, it's very simple, the F-8 has a very good turning radius as well has good energy retention during a turn ; the mirage F1 has a very poor turning radius (in comparison) and very good energy retention while the mirage III can have a very good turning radius at some speeds, for about 3-4s, then it's very very poor energy retention will make it loose too much speed (that's what happens to any delta wing fighter, unless it has a superior thrust to weight ratio, like the Super mirage 4000 that never entered production, or the rafale today).

      I thought the same thing. They appear unnecessarily bulky. Apparently quite difficult to pilot. Many of the aircraft carrier mishaps seem to involve them. Maybe they were much better in the air than landing and taking off. But according to the info in the replies, I’m very wrong.
